The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Beware of Old Reviews
Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Have stayed here three years ago and it was perfect. This visit was very, very disappointing.
The UGLY: The sofa, chairs and furnishings were stained (I mean junk yard stained) and chipped. I had to put sheets on the sofa to be able to sit on it. They offered me a smaller room-but just as worn. Pictures with broken frames on wall, walls with dirt marks everywhere ,holes, ceiling fan full of dust on paddles, pillows without pillow protectors (kept thinking lice-yuk) and one was so ripped-the cheap fluff was coming out. Carpet needs replacing. Window screen ripped. It was just horrible. On a scale of 1-5 with 5 being excellent. I give the inside accommodations a 1.
Last time I was here we had 5 star sheets and pillows-did not want to get out of bed they were so good, cute decorations, robes to snuggle in-nice furnishings. They are still the same furnishing minus the cute décor and just all broken, stained and ripped. I still can't believe the condition of this place! Beware of reviews you read-they may be old.
We were put in the "dog suite"-they said it was an upgrade....really?. We were bumped from our requested room due to a bridle party needing it. It used to be "No Pets". Husband has allergies-oh well. Said it's a no smoking facility- Good, except I had to ask some none guests who were using our outdoor seating to go smoke someplace else-the staff leave at 5:30 so I had to do it.
Yes, I complained a lot. The staff was so nice though and said they have been telling the owner that guests have been complaining. But no deals here. They heard my pain but did not offer any compensation. Paid $500 for 2 nights plus $18 a day parking fee. The breakfast did not start till 8:30 when staff opened the lobby and they did away with fruit and yogurt. Just pastries, instant oatmeal, juice and coffee. In the morning could not sit on the outdoor patio-some non guest business people were sitting there at 8:00 with their Starbucks doing paper work-I did not want to disturb them-so we left and found breakfast in town. Also, there was major construction going on next door at the art museum. So starting at 7:15 each morning drilling and banging till 5:00. But that is not the inn's fault-just mine for not asking. I would wait a year before booking-they might clean up their act and the construction should be over.
The Bad: The staff has to listen to all the complaints. Refreshing the interior is part of good inn business and it is being neglected.
The Good: I can decide not to return. There are many nice places to stay in La Jolla. But it was clean. Staff is excellent. The location was just perfect. If you do decide to stay here-ask when construction will end. Ask for a second floor room-otherwise you will hear lots of footsteps. Ask if they have remodeled yet. Or if you can afford it ask about their sister property next door. You just need to rent the whole mansion!

Excellent location. Fairly standard inn.

The location of this inn is perfect. One can easily walk to anyplace in La Jolla, it's fairly quiet, and the sound of the crashing waves is soothing.

The room itself was clean and comfortable. The bed and pillows were good. There's in-room coffee, extra blankets, and robes to use if one wants. The gas fireplace is also pleasant. The room itself has seen better days: the ceiling fan was in rough shape and the shutters inside the windows were broken. They seem to be working on making improvements, though. Repairs got pretty loud at about 8:30 the morning we were there. We were up and ready to go, but I imagine some guests were woken up by the noise. We checked out a bit early because it was so loud and it was no longer relaxing to stay.

Close to beach!

We stayed two nights at the Scripps Inn in a 1st floor room - when we walked out the front door, you can see our view in the picture included here. It has GREAT proximity to the beach - literally you walk across the street and you can climb down the rocks via a couple of baths and be sitting on the beach. It is also a block from the infamous Seals - they were fun to walk down and watch a couple of times.

I would highly recommend booking a 2nd floor room on either of the corners that face the beach - they also have a small kitchenette (ours just had a very small fridge), which would be nice because you are about a 15 min walk to restaurants.

Also the parking is great (bonus in a highly congested beach area) - right in front of the rooms or right behind the building.

Perfect Location

I searched long and hard for a perfect place to stay in La Jolla. The Scripps in was just that place. This was a perfect location that offers the classic Pacific crashing against the rocks and you can hear it from your room if you are fortunate enough to have a room close to the ocean.
Rooms were clean and more than adequate, but the scenery is the star of this location.

Excellent waterfront property, with beautiful views

Beautiful property in La Jolla, cozy, clean, and cute. Walking distance to everything in La Jolla, but off the the strip enough that it's quiet. You can hear the waves from the rooms. Would absolutely stay again.
