How to Get There
We booked a 2 bedroom suite as we’d left it late to book. We loved the space, the view, the huge fridge and cooking facilities. There’s a coffee machine too. We liked being able to go down to reception and pick up some basics every morning for breakfast. The parking is great to have as La Jolla is tricky for parking. The staff were great. Lots of useful info about the area including about the whale watching (ie it is too early to do it in Dec if you really want to see whales but there will likely be dolphins). We came back to stay again here after a trip to the desert even though there are cheaper places and more expensive places we have stayed in before in La Jolla.
The Inn is not fancy so no big lobby or pool, and no gym. However there is a great gym 5 minutes walk away (the La Jolla Sports Club) which does passes so no issue there. Great location for running to Bird Rock or even to the Aquarium. I did both and enjoyed the views along the way.
Came out to La Jolla for a wedding. The wedding party's reserved rooms at another (and larger) hotel was booked so we searched and decided to stay at Scripps Inn, It was an excellent stay (3 nights) . We had a second floor room facing the beach. Staff was very friendly and helpful. In room coffee service was perfect for an early morning front porch "sip & read" session. As mentioned in other reviews, there is a continental breakfast served at the office. There was also an in-room mini fridge for other beverages and snacks.
We took full advantage of the ocean front view, the easy to access beaches and the miles of oceanfront walking paths. And yes, had to check out the seals, the Cove and the Cave all within walking distance. It was relatively quiet..there is a little road noise in the early evening but it gets quieter later. Parking is tight so we paid for on-site parking. We would definitely come back to Scripps Inn.
The staff were very Helpful and super nice. Shout out to Gary Carla Destiny For making my last minute Mothers Day getaway a Beautiful memory. I also want to say Housekeeping did a great job, our room was spotless. My daughter left her makeup bag in the room and one of the girls ran out to our car and handed it back to her. I'm already planning are next trip.
i did more research than i would ever care to admit before booking this property. i wanted a good location without paying $800 per night and we didn't need something super fancy. The Scripps Inn is perfectly situated right on the edge of everything. the property has amazing water and park views that were breathtaking. we even saw 6 weddings happen in the park across the street over 3 days!! we walked everywhere, never needed a car and felt close to everything. The staff was very nice and they do serve a nice breakfast of pastries in the AM. There are keurig coffee machines in the room along with a mini fridge.
Now the rooms are very nice and well appointed. they are not luxurious and if you are the type of person to notice some cracked grout or rusty this or that, you will not like this place, it is not perfect. My biggest complaint was the noise. being on the ground floor we heard EVERYTHING above us. the tenants left for the airport at 3 am on Sunday, and i was awake for an hour. you can hear them talk, hear the TV, it got super old. This wouldn't keep me from staying there again, but bring earplugs for sleeping. also, the wifi was not great, which as a business traveler, is very disappointing and essential. i need wifi and coffee and not much else to survive.
And the people watching is just out of control....
We stayed three nights in mid-February. The location is supurb - along the beach in La Jolla within easy walking distance of the harbor seal colony and downtown shopping and restaurants. The room (#2) was clean, nicely furnished, and comfortable, but the bathroom was a little tight. We noted that there is very little sound insulation in the ceiling, and we definitely knew when the upstairs occupants were in residence. There is limited harbor view from this room, but there is an attractive sitting area on the deck. The included breakfast required a trip to the office to select pastries (very good and presumably delivered fresh each morning), juice and Keurig K-cups for the in-room coffee maker. Be aware that breakfast hours are short, I think 8:30-10:00 weekdays, and that the pastry selection will be limited if you go late. When I was picking up breakfast on the day of our departure, I overheard a conversation between the desk clerk and another guest, who was having parking charges refunded. Our confirmation mentioned that every guest was guaranteed parking, but there was no disclosure that there was a charge for parking. I confirmed that their website makes no mention of a charge for parking. When I checked out, the desk clerk stated that the charge ($18 per night) is disclosed on the Expedia website (we did not book through Expedia). She immediately agreed to refund the $54 to my American Express card, and I guess I should have delayed our departure to the airport while she did that, because no refund every appeared in my account.
