With its eclectic Mediterranean-style architecture and an unforgettable pink hue, La V (as the loyal staff calls it) has long been a beacon of sunny luxury. Strolling across the cool tile beneath intricately painted wooden beam ceilings, it’s easy to forget that you’re just steps away from La Jolla instead of tucked away at a hidden estate along Spain’s balmy shores. They say that frequent visits from the Hollywood elite are what cemented the hotel’s reputation as a quintessential California getaway, but the real stars of this show are the views. In the airy lobby bar, an attractive crowd takes the hotel’s Mediterranean style to heart, leisurely sipping cocktails at tables and sofas scattered among nooks affording long looks out over the green lawn to the crashing breakers below.
Bed & Bath
The hotel’s 112 rooms and suites uphold the Mediterranean vibe but have their own style with antique furnishings playing off of Spanish mosaics, plantation shutters and exposed white fir beams. Views in Traditional Rooms extend out over the lush gardens or La Jolla, while Deluxe Ocean-Facing Room do just that, making the waves of La Jolla Cove and the Pacific the focal point. Come sunset, the Ocean-Facing Rooms’ neutral tones are bathed in more vibrant orange and pink glow, gradually matching the dusky pink exterior. Ocean Villas magnify the resort’s airy aesthetic with oceanfront patios, brightly upholstered furnishings and a fireplace for heating things up after dark.
Executive Chef Daniel Barron whips up delicious dishes such as wild king salmon with butterball potatoes, dill creme, blue lake beans. The restaurant’s two separate dining areas, a sun-splashed patio and a more elegant dining room, all offer the stunning views the resort is known for, making for a delightful dinner. Also on site? A pool and full-service gym.
How to Get There
Aside from check in which was a bit of a gong show, this is an amazing hotel which I would go back to in a heartbeat. Stayed in Villa 10 over looking the park and ocean and the room was amazing. If I were to describe the hotel in a word, I’d choose elegant. Great restaurant and great staff.
Couple things: Better pillows & fix the Terrace door.
The location is unbeatable with a great view. There is a small walkway beside the hotel to take you right down to the park/water. You can stroll through town or just walk along the coast. Valet parking was simple and quick. The decor was a bit dated but we didn’t mind. The bathrooms were very clean. We had little kids and they were smart to put us beside the elevators and in the room above the lobby.
Tip: walk to the end of the hallway and out the fire escape to get an awesome view of the water.
I have stayed ta the La Valencia Hotel about 25-27 times over the last 5 years. I am always made to feel welcome and treated like a VIP, especially by Michelle de La Espriella. She is the Front Office Manager at the property. MIchelle always welcomes me personally and makes it her job to insure that I am comfortable and well taken care of. As well she is especially attentive to my cat who LOVES the hotel, and what sophisticated pussy cat wouldn't?
The rest of the staff is great as well. I usually deal with Robert (front desk) and Nancy (concierge). The food is wonderful at the restaurant, the pool and the pool food service is also flawless.
I would HIGHLY recommend staying here the next time you find yourself in La Jolla, you will not be disappointed!
Make sure to ask for Michelle, she will make your stay unforgettable.
