How to Get There
We spent a weekend at the Hilton Harbor Island to decompress from a just-concluded conference. This is a compact Hilton but it has all of the necessary amenities. We stayed in a two-room Harbor View Suite on the ninth (top) floor which gave us two balconies to enjoy the sweeping water view from Point Loma on past downtown San Diego. We enjoyed watching military and merchant ships passing by with regularity. The suite was well-appointed, including two bathrooms.
We enjoyed several meals in the on-site Panorama restaurant and found the menu to be varied and sophisticated. High marks for the seared scallops! Service was great. The hotel's Food and Beverage Director, Mr. Michael Hutchison, stopped by our table twice to chat for a bit and ask how we were enjoying our meals. A nice touch.
We did find that, despite strongly worded warnings on each balcony (every room has at least one), guests would smoke tobacco or other substances out there. If we had our balcony doors open, we would get a taste, sometimes strong, of whatever was being smoked. Ugh. We recognized this is probably very difficult for the hotel to police.
There was one day during which there was a lot of helicopter activity at the Naval Air Station a mile across the harbor. We were told this happens a couple of days per week. It got noisy at times but it ended in the afternoon.
Despite these somewhat minor quibbles, here's the bottom line:
After a hotel stay, we ask ourselves if we would stay at the same hotel for a leisure trip again. In the case of this Hilton, we both said "absolutely."
Beautiful, serene views of the sailboats sailing by and quiet area that is conveniently close to the airport. Very friendly and helpful staff. Room.was very clean every day. Enjoyed the balcony with view of the water.
Clean rooms, firm and comfortable bed, quiet, good views, smart tv, friendly staff, food is ok, poorly designed bathroom, extremely small pool, no validated parking $25 a day. Automatic 18% tip for room service.
stayed one night to be near airport. Staff was welcoming, room was clean and view is fantastic. Special shout out to Gennifer in the hotel restaurant. She was delightful--treated my 6 year old daughter like a queen at breakfast. Would definitely stay again.
Try everywhere else before coming to this Hilton. I had no choice unfortunately. Staff at the front are friendly and good but that’s the end of anything positive about the hotel. No complimentary water other than two bottles for Hilton Honnors members. And watch out for delivery fee added for in room dining service. I would have given more tip if they didn’t have such trick.
