How to Get There
The outdoor pool, bubbling fountain and stream at the Westin Palo Alto is still one of my favorite Westin’s to stay in. The room upgrades on the first floor are really great and the location proximity to Stanford and downtown Palo Alto with train access are unbelievable convenient. The food is great, wine choices are very nice. The workout room is great if you are a runner, not so great if you are a cyclist. The front checkin staff were among the most polite we’ve ever had.
Stayed for 2 weekend nights at the Westin Hotel in Palo Alto, Ca. Underground parking garage is $20 per night. It is well lit and I felt safe in this garage. The lobby is not too big but it is beautifully. The lobby’s marble floor add a touch of elegance. Check in experience was very welcoming and pleasant. Dwayne was very nice in accommodating my request for a specific room location as me and my wife are suffering from knee joints discomforts. Dwayne even held the elevator door for us. I remember experiencing this extra service only when we stayed at 5-Star hotels in Asia. Good job Westin Hotel!
Our room is spacious with comfortable beds and pillows. Slept well for 2 nights! The bathroom is larger than your average hotel bathroom. It has a separate bathtub and a separate shower. Wow, I was able to fine tune the room temperature to my liking.
Our 2-night stay came with pre-paid breakfast buffets. The Sunday breakfast buffet was better than the somewhat average Saturday buffet as they have cook-to-order pancakes, eggs and omelets on Sundays. (See attached pictures)
The hotel is located near a nice strip shopping mall with plenty of places to eat and it is a short driving distance from Stanford Shopping Center and Stanford University. We have stayed here several times before and will gladly come back.
Stayed overnight on a Thursday in January. Although I am an SPG Elite member, my room was about as far away from the entrance as any room could be - and right outside a dumpster that was loudly run at 4AM Friday morning. I checked in late and wanted to just hit the bed. However the toilet wouldn't flush - handle was broken off. All in all, not the best experience. If I come back to Palo Alto I will probably opt to try the next door property - the Sheraton - instead.
This hotel is located right on El Camino Real, walking distance to the Stanford campus. Our room was surprisingly large and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was also large, with separate tub and shower. As an older property, it did not have the separate washing-up area that many newer properties have. The sink was right there with the tub, shower and toilet.
One surprising fact was that the restaurant was closed. They directed us to the Sheraton next door. This was not overly inconvenient. Perhaps the restaurant is only open part of the year.
We had very little contact with the staff, but what there was was positive.
First important point....Palo Alto hotels can be very expensive, depending on demand. I happened to visit during a very in-demand period, and I can't fault a hotel for taking advantage of that situation. Still, I would say that if you have to pay over $600 for a room as I did at this hotel, you will be disappointed, and that colors my review a bit.
Overall, it is fine, though certainly a 3-4 star hotel. It feels much more like a more moderate to budget chain property. The lobby is unimpressive - though the staff was very nice. As others have noted, getting to your room involves navigating a maze of hallways. It is a pretty bland property. The room is comfortable and large, and the bed very comfortable. The bathroom is large and clean. There is a little coffee maker in the room. There are good plug-ins on the desk.
But overall it does not feel like a Westin - more like a less expensive property. Big and impersonal.
