At the corner of a tree-lined street, Su Nido exemplifies the warmth that has long attracted Angelenos to this pint-size artist colony 90 minutes from Los Angeles. Quiet and intimate, the Su Nido is meant to feel like home, with plenty of Mission Revival character. Most of the property’s rooms are anchored by a sunny central cobblestone courtyard, a nice spot to linger over a bottle of Pinot Noir; two rooms are in an adjacent building. Spanish-style charm comes in the form of clay roofs, vaulted ceilings and mosaic-tiled baths. Meanwhile, plush beds, fireplaces, soaking tubs and stocked kitchenettes add a touch of luxury. Though there’s no on-site restaurant, you’re just a short walk from Ojai Avenue’s eateries, and the gregarious owners love to offer suggestions.
In the Area
Hike one of the area’s many paths, such as the easy 1.8-mile Shelf Road Trail. Check out the insane bounty of local seafood, fruit and honey at the Ojai farmers market, open every Sunday until 1 p.m. Dig into heirloom tomato salad and mushroom and Asiago cheese crostini at Suzanne’s Cuisine. Some of the best up-and-coming wineries are close by. Start by exploring the vineyards in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. Drive to Meditation Mount to catch the town’s famed “pink moment,” when the surrounding mountains and valley are cast in a rosy glow.
How to Get There
This charming boutique hotel is within walking distance of downtown Ojai shops and eateries, yet it was quiet and secluded. Tasteful arty decor, luxurious bath products, and spacious rooms add to the "nesting" quality. I stayed in the Quail Room, on the first floor off the central courtyard. Lots of natural light. Can't wait to stay there again.
We stayed for an overnight lay-over before going to French Polynesia. The staff was very helpful, the location couldn't have been better with great restaurants within close walking distance, and in the evening we enjoyed the quiet neighborhood with after dinner drinks on our patio, then a fire in the fireplace. We have made this our choice for accommodations when we come to Ojai to visit with family.
We stayed for four nights in November. When we arrived at night the office was closed but they left the keys and detailed instructions for us. Frankly, after the drive from LAX I would have liked almost anything, but the Cardinal suite in which we stayed was superb. Its a true suite with a living room (including fireplace), very large bathroom (with tub and separate shower) and a wonderful bedroom. The next morning we officially checked in and the management could not have been more welcoming and helpful. By daylight we found that in addition the the adjoining parking space (very helpful in the middle of the night), we were just off the main street of Ojai and down the block from a day spa that we had booked. All in all, every night it was a pleasure getting back to the Inn and our suite and several of the nights we walked to excellent restaurants.
All the reviews for Su Nido were great so I booked a room to take my husband away for his birthday weekend. When we arrived, the staff took great care of us right away and gave us the Heron suite, which is one of their nicest suites. I couldn’t of been more thrilled, the suite is spacious, gorgeous and has a large balcony, which we totally enjoyed. There is a fireplace in the front room and a little kitchenette that had snacks and waters for us to enjoy. The beautiful bathroom is larger then ours at home with a shower and a bathtub, and the bedroom was perfect with the most comfortable king size bed. The beautiful grounds are designed with an old world mission style courtyard, and the Inn is only a couple blocks down from the main street, so it’s quiet and in walking distance to restaurants and shops. My husband loved it so much that he was disappointed that I had only booked us 2 nights, so we will definitely be back soon. This is our new favorite place to stay!
I am a repeat visitor at the Su Nido Inn. It is a very small and quiet Inn located off a side road, but near Downtown Ojai, in walking distance of many things. If you are seeking a big resort with a spa, gym, restaurant, etc., look elsewhere. If you want a quiet, spacious suite or well appointed room, look no further. Most have kitchenettes and a living room. Some have balconies and a gas fireplace. Great for a girls weekend or couples getaway. Not a family with kids place. Comfortable and charming with Molton Brown toiletries, complimentary water and snacks in the room, highly recommend. you won't want to leave.
