A glam launch pad for exploring hip Manhattan Beach, with a hoppin’ lobby bar and a breezy rooftop whirlpool

The Look

The Shade feels like a mod reimagining of the promenade deck on a glitzy cruise liner of yesteryear. The lobby’s buffed-to-a-shine cherrywood floors are lined with cushy sofas and cocktail tables perfect for a leisurely meal or round of drinks. Designed by Christopher Lowell, of Discovery Home Channel fame, the public spaces offer clean lines, lots of natural light and a balance of architectural elements that include glass, wood and stone. On most days, floor-to-ceiling door panels are opened up so the lobby space expands out onto a dining patio that’s accented with breezy, seafoam-green drapes billowing from the second story on down to the sun dappled floor.

Bed and Bath

An open floor plan lets the centerpiece of the room shine: a two-person Sanijet Jacuzzi tub with a granite ledge that’s perfect for keeping your champagne close enough to offset the bubbling warmth. For a bit of bathroom privacy, wood and smoked-glass doors slide easily to partition it off from the Tempurpedic bed and the unique cyclone fireplace. In-room amenities including a Keurig Vue coffee machine, turn-down cake pops from a local bakery and a lighting color menu stand as luxurious finishing touches.

The lobby bar triples up as a scrumptious eatery. In the mornings you’ll find a light breakfast spread to start the day right with bagels and lox, hard-boiled eggs, juice, coffee and pastries. Stick around for lunch and dinner and enjoy a healthy menu recently redesigned by The Biggest Loser chef Devin Alexander. After that you can either bask on the rooftop patio or work off the calories exploring the area on one of the hotel’s free beach cruisers. The beach boardwalk is a short spin away and you can pedal down as far as Redondo Beach or up even to Venice if you’ve got the stamina.

We loved our stay here! As soon as we walked up, Austin an employee was there to greet us. He has such a positive attitude! It’s a great location to Manhattan beach and you far to ride the bikes there for free. It took us about 5 mins and we were there. Beautiful rooftop pool. We will visit again!

Stayed here for a work trip, the rooms are really nice and comfortable. The service was excellent and the food in the restaurant was also great. The room i had overlooked the Marina and was nice to look out at the end of a hard day working. I would definitely stay here again.

Once again, Shade Hotel and its fabulous staff exceeded our expectations. Always feels like "home" when we visit this small boutique hotel where everyone "knows your name." Superb service and hospitality; great happy hour daily; fun cake pops with turn down service and a wonderful healthy breakfast in the morning. Rooms are immaculate and have a very hip vibe which is perfect for southern CA!

Another Fantastic Visit!

I just recently stayed at the Shade Manhattan Beach for the third time. Gotta be honest,...I just won't stay anywhere else the next time I'm back in LA! The Shade has it all! The location can't be beat, the ultra cool, mod interior of the bar and adjoining restaurant makes you feel so at home and the servers and bartenders are super pleasant and accommodating. The rooms are super comfy and clean. There's a wicked cool rooftop pool and that only adds to the cool vibe. To top it all off, Chelsea at the front desk is like a little ray of sunshine. She is so helpful, friendly and super smiley. The Shade is lucky to have someone like her at the front entrance greeting people and helping get them checked in. A happy smiley face is a welcome sight after traveling for hours!!

My favorite hotel:)

I have been staying at the MB Shade for over 4 years and every time I travel to LA. My first visit was with my daughter who would be attending USC in the future. From the first moment I arrived(4 years ago) to the last day I left(a few weeks ago) I have had the most PERFECT visits. I met Chelsea when checking in for the first time. I asked her for help finding surf lessons for my daughter which she did immediately. Since then a huge perk has been seeing Chelsea for each visit. I have brought all of my family members and friends with me on different trips an EVERYONE loved The Shade. They all got to know Chelsea as well and she made all of our stays so welcoming and easy! The rooms are spectacular, with comfy beds and awesome bathtubs. It couldn't be more relaxing. I also enjoy going to the rooftop deck to sit and read or have a glass of wine. The location of The Shade is perfection. While on vacation, I enjoy being able to park my car and travel on foot. You can walk to restaurants, shops, The Strand, The MB Pier and I continue to find new places everytime I go. They provide beach cruisers for a bike ride and beach chairs if you want to sit and watch the ocean full of surfers. The breakfast in the morning has something for eeryone and it is absolutely delicious and complimentary. I have gotten to know alot of the staff over the years and feel so comfortable staying there every time I visit LA. They are kind, polite and so helpful if you need anything! I met Mark on my last visit and look forward to seeing him again. He was also so kind and welcoming. Always asking if there is anything he can do to help. When we left my daughter at USC this fall, Chelsea was there to wish her well and we knew that if my daughter needed a friend in LA(We live in Philadelphia) she could call Chelsea. She has become a friend of the family. She is kind and is amazing at her job. I will be there again this weekend and I can't wait! My daughter will come from USC and stay with me as well! It really is my favorite hotel!
