How to Get There
Well the main reason we booked here was because we could not book at the "The Westin Monache Resort, Mammoth", our first choice and this seemed like a good second choice. From the name and online profile it seemed like a good deal at around $350/night but we were sorely disappointed. From first impression to last it was a bad experience. For $350/night you expect some decent accommodation.
The snow and ice were not cleared from the parking lot and driveway to the hotel, we almost had an accident as we were entering the hotel a sour SUV skidded on the ice and rolled back, we ended up on the sidewalk. Luckily we didn't hit anyone and the police came by to rescue us. Understood that it was winter but we have lived in snow country before and even apartment buildings do a better job at keeping their parking lots clean than these guys, come on, you are a hotel, no one should endanger their lives just by entering your property.
The room was quite small and smelly. The hallways narrow and musty. The carpets were old and dirty, just seemed the hotel needed a major upgrade or renovation. We asked for a better/upgraded room but none were available. Because of these reasons we tried to minimize our stay at the "resort" as much as possible, and only returned from our outings when we were tired and ready to hit the sack. We decided to cut our trip short and left a day early.
The lobby was pretty good, a relaxing place to hang out around the fireplace. There was free tea, coffee and hot chocolate. There were also some board games including chess. The Foosball setup was a nice addition but was hard to get as it was always taken by other families.
The staff was overall helpful.
So I haven't actually stayed at the hotel so this review is only regarding the receptionist/billing/front desk staff.
I made a reservation on Booking.com but my travel plans changed so I cancelled it for free well in advance of my stay (cancellation came through on 6/18). My card had a charge of $239 which was supposed to be refunded to me automatically.
A week and a half later, as the charge was still there, I called the hotel (on 6/28), and was told that Booking.com never sent the cancellation notice but it is now going to be noted, and refund would take 5-7 business days.
Today I had to call again since the charge - you guessed it - is still there, and front desk told me that my refund was only processed yesterday, and will take 5-7 business days. So the call 2 weeks ago was completely ignored?
Just "great" customer service all around, and "great" attention to detail. I'd think twice about staying at a business run in such a poor manner.
We stayed at the Lodge for 3 nights. Upon arrival the girl at reception was quite cold, we were not greeted with a smile. When entering the Lodge (where we were staying) the ramp on the way in was broken and an awful trip hazard, and the first thing you see as you walk in the front door was an overflowing bin, which we soon realised was overflowing because there are no bins in the rooms - not even in the toilets. Meaning that if you have to dispense of sanitary waste you have you leave your room, and take it all the way out into the hall and put it in either this bin, or one of the bin bags that were laying in the hallway. The room itself was in dire need of refurbishment and the sheets on my bed were badly stained. The two closest ice machines to us were broken meaning we had to go to a different building to get ice. The room did not have a fridge. There was 2 available sockets, so you have to chose between your TV, a fan (no air con), or charging your phones. The curtains had holes in them so the light shine through them in the morning. The windows were also very difficult to open. The only thing that this place has going for it is the location, near local shops with views of mountains (not from most of the rooms) and the beds were comfortable. I honestly have no idea why this place has 4* because it does not deserve anywhere near that. We left feeling scammed.
At check in was rudely answered regarding a request I had. Got to room it was dark, smelled stale and like smoke, no air conditioning. When I asked about a room change I was treated like I was in the wrong was it was suggested that I check out (paying that days room rate of course.....) I had to pay for an upgraded room which had a faulty light, a shower handle falling off, and months / years of calcium deposits on the sink faucet. Oh and the air??? Coming out of a VERY loud clunky air conditioner. Don't ask for extra time at checkout, regardless of the event you are attending. Cleaning staff isn't able to work with those requests.
When I checked into the hotel, I was greeted by great professional staff. My room was more than I expected. Comfortable, clean and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this hotel again for it's location, pleasant staff, wonderful rooms,and great restaurants.I will recommend to friends and family. Thanks again for wonderful stay.
