How to Get There
Very friendly and helpful front desk employees. I loved the fireplace in my room, bed was comfortable, bathroom was spacious. Location was perfect for where I needed to be during the weekend. I would definitely stay there again.
It was also nice to have the grab and go breakfast. I am not a big breakfast eater so what they had was enough for me.
I love this place and I hate this place. In terms of the facility, I would give Hotel Los Gatos an Excellent rating. The place is beautiful. We rented two adjoining rooms: a large suite + a connected single. Wonderful rooms: clean, nicely decorated, and comfortable. On the other hand, most of the normal services one might expect from a place of this caliber were found to be quite lacking. At the heart of the issue is that the hotel doesn't own the restaurant, which opens daily at either 5:00 or 5:30 depending on the day. Therefore, things like a hot breakfast or lunch of any sort (aside from an extremely limited room service menu) are not available. In fact, I tried on multiple occasions to get a beer from the bar (and I mean a nice draft IPA or other craft brew) and could not until the restaurant opened at 5:30 PM. I even tried to order what was advertised as a "rotating craft beer selection" from the room service menu, but was told that didn't exist, leaving just the three beers found in the in-room mini bar (Heineken, Corona or Amstel Light, which are not what one expects to drink when in a microbrew mecca like silicon valley...) to choose from. Also, we arrived on here on Valentines Day evening and were not only told that the restaurant couldn't accommodate us for dinner (which I guess is understandable), but that we were not even permitted to go to the bar for a beer as even the seats at the bar were reserved for Valentines Day diners, many, if not most, of whom were not hotel guests but local residents. So, after a very long day's drive from LA to Los Gatos, we couldn't even use the restaurant's bar/lounge for a drink (though to be fair, they did offer to send up drinks to our room, though that is not what we were looking for). And that's the issue: The restaurant, which has a great reputation (Michelin rated, which they will oft remind you, should you forget), just happens to be located on the hotel grounds but otherwise seems to operate fairly independent of the hotel; just like any other restaurant, giving no sort of special preference to the actual hotel guests. A final note about the restaurant, which in all fairness, we never visited: we have a daughter with Celiac disease, requiring gluten-free dining options. With most any halfway decent restaurant, this is no problem as a good kitchen can whip up something fairly easily. This restaurant seemed not terribly flexible in this regard as our two choices were (a) a bun-less burger or (b) a $63 filet mignon. On a positive note for the town of Los Gatos, they have some wonderful restaurants with gluten-free options like Hanna for Vietnamese cuisine and also Blue Line Pizza, which we had in our room on two of our three nights here. And since it was not possible to get a good beer at the hotel before 5:30 PM, the Loma Brewing Company just up the street offers some delicious local brews. Net/net: beautiful hotel, grounds and rooms - and if you don't care about the fact that for all intents and purposes, the bar/restaurant service doesn't start until 5:30 PM each day (unless it's a holiday of some sort, in which case you might be shut out all together), then this is a charming hotel. If you want some basic services like eggs and bacon for breakfast; lunch; or a drink from something aside from your room minibar before 5:30 PM, this is not your place and, if I'm being honest, a Hampton Inn might serve you better.
Convenient to downtown Los Gatos, my wife and I stayed the night as a little getaway from the rigors of everyday life. We checked in online and received a $10 credit which we spent on a candy bar from the in room offerings. Our room had a little balcony with 2 chairs and a table, over looking the courtyard and heated swimming. The room itself was large, and the bed comfortable. The biggest negative was the pathetic excuse of a breakfast they put out in the lobby. We had paid for a package which included breakfast, but I would advise against that.
We stayed three nights here. All the stuff always try to help us and businesslike but at the same time very friendly. When we had some trouble with our air conditioner and fire place, the engineer came very soon and fixed it with explanation for me to use it better during my stay. He was very knowledgeable. They don't have their own restaurant but serve free basic breakfast in the lobby area. If you want to have breakfast in the restaurant, a cafe is just in front of this hotel. We will definitely come back when we have another occasion to visit this area.
I spent a great evening with my wife in this restaurant. Good food. Good wine. Good atmosphere. The place is refined. I can go there many times. Compared to many places, it's better.
The location in the heart of Los Gatos allows you to have a walk easily in Santa Cruz Avenue.
