On a busy stretch of high-rise apartment buildings along West L.A.’s Wilshire Boulevard, the Palomar’s unassuming 19-story façade conceals unexpected moments of charm, warmth and style inside. Cheerful valets greet guests and, if you have a pet in tow, there’s a sign with your pooch’s name on it too. Marble floors in bold black and white stripes give way to a rotunda lobby lounge studded with small mirrors.
Bed and Bath
The 264 guestrooms — starting at 350 square feet — are done up in soothing tans, beiges and browns spiked with accessories in glossy lipstick-red. The 650-square-foot suites have large living rooms with a generous amount of work space. Room amenities are both practical and fun; alongside the iron and ironing board in the closets are animal-pattern bathrobes, a yoga mat and an umbrella (because who packs one for a trip to L.A.?). A “Forgot it? We’ve got it!” card lists dozens of items the hotel keeps on hand, from razors and sewing kits to cell phone chargers and USB cords. Bathrooms offer musk-scented bath products by the Milan fashion house Etro.
The hotel’s restaurant, BLVD 16, serves a farm-to-table menu highlighting the Golden State’s agricultural bounty for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the restaurant provides 24-hour room service. Work it off in the fitness room (elliptical machines, stationary bikes, treadmills, workout balls and weights) or the outdoor pool, which is flanked by stylish chaise longues and geometric lighting. In-room spa services are also available.
In the Area
L.A.’s Westwood neighborhood, between Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, is best known for UCLA, but some lesser-known sights are also nearby. Within a few blocks are the Hammer Museum of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works and Pierce Bros. Westwood Memorial Park, eternal resting place of Marilyn Monroe, Truman Capote, Roy Orbison and Farrah Fawcett. Being a college neighborhood, there’s some surprisingly inexpensive gourmet dining nearby (including the Neapolitan pizzas at 800 Degrees, or burgers at U-Mini, an offshoot of Umami, which launched L.A.’s hamburger revolution). At the top end, Napa Valley Grille caters to sophisticates and wine lovers, and ethnic foodies will delight in Persian eateries on Westwood Boulevard and Japanese offerings in “Little Osaka” on Sawtelle Boulevard, a couple of miles away.
How to Get There
The hotel was renovated few years ago. Bedrooms and bathrooms are updated. I stayed in double bed room. It is kind of small but definitely doable. The bathrooms are nice. I didn’t see any mold or mildew.
The staff is very nice and friendly.
Hotel is very close to Westwood campus. You can also catch bus to Santa Monica pier.
They also have free coffee in the morning till 8 or 9 AM.
We came here due to a fire emergency in Los Angeles. The staff was so helpful with their concern about our plight and the need to also find lounging for our furry family too. They went beyond the call of duty to make sure our stay was top flight.
What we also experienced was a boutique hotel with a quality room, food and the other amenities to make any stay worth your while.
it's close enough to UCLA, the west side of LA and Beverly Hills.
This is a destination hotel for family, business and just hanging out.
Stayed two nights at the Kimpton. Overall good experience, rooms are nice size and comfortable. Lobby has comfy chairs for lounging and mingling.
One drawback is the rooms do not have a coffee machine so you need to wander downstairs in the morning to get your caffeine.
