Staying in a hotel in Los Angeles can feel more like a performance than a vacation — dressing up for hip lobby scenes, battling glamazons for prime cabana spots, dance club–volume music pumping at 9 a.m. Not at L’Ermitage Beverly Hills. This is where the sophisticated check in for a true escape. The Zen common spaces contribute to the tranquil vibe with minimalist furniture, sculptural floral arrangements and a warm palette of umber, wheat and honey.
Bed and Bath
Drawing design inspiration from both Scandinavia and Asia, the rooms are airy and supremely calming. Sycamore paneling and clean-lined maple furniture add a glow to the airy white and caramel color scheme. Distractions such as TVs are out of sight in built-in entertainment systems, while more relaxing diversions — the balcony and its views of Beverly Hills, the marble deep soaking tub — are front and center.
Enhance your relaxing stay with a green tea and ginger body wrap in the spa or a few hours of lounging by the rooftop pool. Then join the in-the-know Angelenos who gather for laid-back cocktails in the bar (once known as the Writers’ Bar), where original screenplays of The Godfather, The Graduate, Jaws and a working draft of Good Will Hunting hang on the walls. Continue on for dinner at Livello (we prefer the outdoor dining area, with its waterfall and fireplace, to the more staid indoor dining room). Chef Joseph Elevado has developed an innovative menu fusing Italian and Asian flavors (think seared wagyu with mustard greens, pickled daikon and mustard miso).
In the Area
Make like a local and lunch at M Café de Chaya, the macrobiotic vegan joint overseen by Gwyneth Paltrow’s former chef. Then give your plastic a workout. Start on famous Rodeo Drive, head east to Robertson Boulevard (for It-boutiques like Kitson and Madison), and then tackle celeb stylist favorites including Church Boutique, in West Hollywood, and Decades, on La Brea. Legendary Wolfgang Puck eatery Spago recently got some work done, and the renovation has restored its status as the top table in Beverly Hills. You’re just a 20-minute drive from the Richard Meier–designed Getty Center. Take an architecture tour, explore the impressive art collection, and then have a picnic while taking in the stunning views of the city.
