A hipster hacienda hideaway with summer camp inspired rooms in up-and-coming South Palm Springs

The Look

Midcentury modern design is nearly as ubiquitous in Palm Springs as, well, palms. That’s why this meticulously restored 1950s hacienda hideaway feels like a breath of fresh air. In lieu of garish facades and flashy signage, you’re greeted with a simple white sign with two graphic birds, a subtle nod to a modern rustic vibe that carries through to a communal barn and outdoor firepit. The 20 rooms are decked out like hipster cabins, with exposed beam ceilings, russet red walls, burnished concrete floors with inlaid pebbles and butterfly chairs with worn leather covers. Gray Swiss army blankets top cushy-comfy mattresses, and instead of closets you’ll find a metal footlocker. Some open-plan bathrooms include old horse troughs as bathtubs, while the absence of phones and TVs keeps distractions to a minimum. The hotel’s barn serves as a mess hall, with simple breakfasts on camp-style tin plates in the morning, lounging to an indie rock soundtrack in the afternoon, and happy hours of shandys and microbrews in the evening. But you’ll find most guests whiling away the days poolside where umbrellas and overhead misters keep things cool. Explore the area on one of the hotel’s bikes or play a few rounds of tennis. Then when the sun sets, gather around the firepit with a glass of red.

In the Area

The Sparrows sits on the main drag in the up-and-coming hipster neighborhood of South Palm Springs. It’s walking distance to the city’s fave café, Koffi, the sleek new Appetito Italian deli and supper club scene at the Purple Room. Too warm by the pool? It’s usually about 30 degrees cooler atop of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, where hiking (or snowshoeing!) trails beckon. Other outdoor adventures await at Joshua Tree National Park or, closer-in, at Tahquitz Canyon and Indian Canyons. Shoppers, check out design and resort-wear shops on North Palm Canyon Drive in downtown and uptown Palm Springs, a couple miles away.

Sanctuary in the desert

Me and my husband stayed for 8 nights the first week of September during their off season. We booked a garden room as read reviews this would be a little more private and less foot traffic and a little more privacy.
The rooms are comfortable, fairly spacious, nicely decorated, attention to detail with the sparrows theme and thoughtful amenities for our stay.
We had read previous reviews that the rooms were a little dark during the day, although this didn't bother us, I could see if a guests eyesight wasn't that good they would need the lights on during the day. When the temperature was 43 degrees centigrade outside the darker room did help keep the room cool along with the efficient air conditioning and a fan above the bedroom.
If I could make one improvement for the room and an easy fix, this would be to add more than 5 coat hangers to the rail(add another 8 ideally), this is due to limited storage space as there are no wardrobes or cabinets etc. This will help greatly.
Also being a lodge/barn, the walls are naturally quite thin, so you can pick up on some guest noises next door, if you are a light sleeper like me, I always pack earplugs anyway. There are no TV's thankfully and enjoyed the fact you could unplug from all electronics here rather than noise pollution from guest television.

The grounds of the lodge are immaculate, again a lot of thought has gone into the lodge continuing the theme throughout, including the reception area and barn area where all activities/engagement take place.
Parking was available and we always had a parking space available.
There is also an outdoor fireplace where you can ask the staff for complimentary S'mores, which we tried for the first time and tasted lovely.
At the far end you'll find a massage tent where you can book at reception, it is tastefully decorated but we didn't use it on this occasion.
The pool area and jacuzzi is a delight, we always found sun beds and also enjoyed our evening jacuzzi's. The hotel was at a lowish occupancy so often it felt like our own place which we enjoyed.
I was worried about the desert heat but I didn't need to. There are misters around the pool area which take the edge off the heat and the staff assist by bringing round cold fragranced towels and ice pops which was a nice touch.

Our room rate included breakfast served between 6-10am every day. This is continental style however at weekends they would put out additional items such as scrambled egg and sausages and salmon and bagels. This is all set up beautifully in the barn.
With regards to the bakery items, there was only banana bread available every day. I would have loved to have seen croissants and pain au chocolat too for a bit of variation.
Fruit is also available but in whole form. Sparrows I would love to see a chopped up fruit salad style with strawberries/melon etc, please add this to your selection (yum)

We ordered lunch a couple of times and times and this was high quality both in taste and presentation. Lunch is served from 11-6pm every day.
If you want to eat dinner here you would either need to eat out in Palm Springs or join their family style dinners which operate twice a week (chicken Wednesday and Steak Saturday). We didn't get to sample this this time around due to this being quiet season but that's ok, it didn't impact our overall experience, however i'm told its very very good.

STAFF-Well what can i say! The staff at Sparrows are what made the trip for us. The front of house team and cleaners behind the scenes keep everything looking immaculate. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the front of house staff. As we stayed for 8 nights we got to get to know some of the staff members. All of them are magical but those we encountered the most were Jairo, Desiree, Nicole and Sam. You guys literally rock!
Sam is currently the manager and I hope she goes far in the company, I was watching the way in which she was dealing with a guest, she has a natural flair in handling day to day issues.
Desiree and Jairo are two of the most kindest staff members I have met worldwide. I am a flight attendant and my husband is a pilot and so we stay in hotels at least twice a month, so you guys have set the bar high. We enjoyed our evening chat and cocktails. Nothing was too much trouble. Desiree, Jairo and Sam also made recommendations on what day trips we should take which was great.
It was my husbands birthday while we were away. He was given a complimentary birthday drink, a handmade card and a wicker bag. Lovely touch thank you!
The staff also ensure 'sage' is burning all day which makes the property smell nice and at night time they transform the atmosphere by putting out several candles and lanterns. We felt super relaxed. To the owners make sure your staff stay with you, you can never let them move on!!!!

We also noticed the staff putting a gift outside all the occupied rooms most evenings. This was an old fashioned wooden crate with some fresh towels, cookies and a bottle of water. The crate said on the front ''fresh towels, water & a tasty treat-sleep well".
Now this wouldn't cost the company very much at all but coming from a customer background myself its little customer touchpoints like this that get noticed(attention to detail).
Upon check out you get given your own bundle of sage in a sparrows logo bag....again another customer touchpoint.

Overall we throughly enjoyed our experience and only two minor things that could further enhance their offering (coat hangers and slightly enhanced breakfast), other than that, this was "our sanctuary in the desert". We would definately visit again at the same time of year.

Cheers Sparrows!

Absolute bliss!!!

This hidden gem in the middle of Palm Springs was a great suprise. The property and grounds were beautiful and well maintained, the staff was attentive and helpfull with renting bikes to dinner ideas. It was also the little things like the cool towells and popcicles by the pool. Cant wait to go back

Absolute best

We booked Sparrows Lodge on a whim and based it off the pictures. It seemed quiet and relaxing which was exactly what we were looking for. Both those expectations were met and then some.
Check in was the easiest, the feel and vibe was so cozy. It was the best most relaxing vacation we have ever taken. I have been telling everyone I know they need to book immediately. I preferred the laid back vibe, everyone is so mellow and attentive. The resort is small and perfect you always feel like your getting everyone’s attention, but not in an overbearing way. The grounds are beautiful.
We booked a couples massage in the open air tent. I was nervous about it once I realized it was open air and about 102 outside. It was the most relaxing experience ever. I wish we had booked another massage during our stay.
The food in the barn was delicious we grabbed lunch while waiting for our room to be ready. We also took advantage of the breakfast and it was fabulous, you would be paying top dollar for what they served and it’s included.
We can’t wait to be able to experience Sparrows Lodge in the future.
I am also very VERY big on cleanliness of a hotel or resort. I check rooms top to bottom before even opening my suit case or sitting down. This place was 10/10 on cleanliness! Everything was spotless, the linens were perfect, the floors spotless. The shower was the cleanest I’ve ever seen in a hotel. We had just stayed in a penthouse in Las Vegas at a 5 star hotel and Sparrows Lodge blew the penthouse out of the park. No comparison how clean and comfortable it was.
