Century-old landmark hotel in the center of Calgary, with an indoor pool and full-service day spa
In 1914 tourists en route to the hot springs in Banff stopped in Calgary to stay at this glamorous property in the center of town. Today the landmark Fairmont Palliser retains much of its original sophistication, particularly in the lobby — a Renaissance Revival rotunda decked out with Tennessee gray marble floors, chandeliers and Botticino and Sylvian marble columns. The guestrooms are similarly sophisticated, with dark wood furnishings, thick brocade curtains and tufted leather headboards, plus all the niceties you’d expect from an Old World grande dame (bathrobes, down duvets). Don’t miss classic afternoon high tea in the lobby, where you’ll feast on shaved roast beef finger sandwiches, vanilla scones with Devonshire cream and French macarons (liqueurs, cocktails and bubbly cost a bit extra).
In the Area
The Fairmont Palliser puts you within walking distance of some of the city’s top shopping, including the Stephen Avenue Walk, a National Historic District and pedestrian shopping center where you’ll find the Bay, Canada’s first department store. A trip up the Calgary Tower provides a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains; the vista might easily inspire a daytrip to Banff National Park — the country’s first national park, just about two hours from Calgary and home to elk, mineral springs and deep blue mountain lakes. Or ask the concierge to arrange a daytrip to the Columbia Icefields, the largest icefields south of Alaska, where you can choose between an hourlong snowcoach tour or a guided glacier ice walk on Athabasca Glacier.
