A 19th-century nobleman’s residence with funky décor and a prime location on the Pest side of the Danube
Set in Jozsefvaros, one of Budapest’s most desirable neighborhoods, and close to both historic sites and lively nightlife, the 80-room Hotel Palazzo Zichy was once the abode of famous Hungarian nobleman, Count Nándor Zichy. The mostly black and white rooms are stylishly decked out. There’s no on-site restaurant, but you’re within walking distance of great eats, and inclusions like free mineral water and coffee, access to the gym and traditional wooden sauna provide solace at the end of a day spent exploring the city.
In the Area
Take advantage of the hotel’s proximity to the storied Danube by boarding a river cruise: cradle a glass of wine on a one-hour evening journey aboard the Danube Legend, which floats past some of the city’s most acclaimed sites, including Buda Castle, the over-the-top ornate Parliament and the famous Chain Bridge, which looks particularly magical at night strung with lights. Cityrama, meanwhile, hosts guided tours of Castle Hill (including a funicular ride to the top) followed by a Danube one-hour cruise. Or, experience the water without going anywhere on one of the city’s famous moored bars, like Spoon Café, a three-storey boat that offers cultural programs and upscale dining.
