Upscale enclave within a sprawling Cape Cod resort, with revamped villas and private beach club access
Spread over 429 acres, the Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club is a full-service beachfront golf and tennis resort where guests and club members play the $8.5 million Nicklaus design golf course, hit balls on one of the tennis courts and take a dip in any of the handful of pools. Accommodation is split between the sprawling Village section and the crown-jewel Mansion enclave, which once was the home of Brewster native Samuel Nickerson and played host to legendary Gilded Age soirees. The building sports gorgeous carved-wood ceilings, a grand staircase, gorgeous leaded glass windows and sweeping views across Cape Cod Bay.
Bed and Bath
After the $40 million overhaul in 2012, all of the 90 rooms on the Mansion side of the resort have been completely redone in a clean, modern beach style, with rattan chairs, comfortable bedding and spacious dressing areas. The large guestrooms have tufted leather ottomans, with pull-out couches in many rooms. Elaborate entertainment centers house flat-screen TVs, games and lovely photograph collections from the Cape. Bathrooms are more low-key, with white floor tiles, wainscoting, oversize stall showers and high-end toiletries.
With numerous tennis courts, rental bikes at the ready and plenty of tee times at the private golf course, Ocean Edge appeals to active types. Don't miss the beachside yoga in the warm months or pump some iron in the fitness center year-round. Parents looking for a bit of alone time can sign kids up for the daily sports camps, or gather their brood for weekly movie nights and s’mores sessions on the beach. Things heat up at night at the sunset-ready Ocean Terrace, where guests sip cocktails and nibble on the hotel’s signature crab cakes, while tavern-style Bayzo's dishes up hearty pub grub (fried calamari, fish tacos, mac ’n' cheese and more) and hosts live music nights.
In the Area
The drive along Route 6A is a lovely escape from the Mid-Cape roadways and is dotted with farm stands, galleries and unique local shops like the Strawberry Patch, where you can pick up quilts, baby clothes and other handmade goods. There’s also easy access to the 26-mile Bike & Rail Trail, which winds its way north up the arm of the Cape toward Provincetown. For a bit of culture, plan a stop at the Cape Cod Museum of Art to wander through its sculpture garden, or head to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and bring the kids for a guided nature walk around the 300 acres of conservation land surrounding the museum. On the dining front, get your fried clam fix at the Sesuit Harbor Cafe (it can get pretty crowded), or go all out for dinner at Fin, in nearby Dennis, where the oyster chowder may be the best you've ever tasted.
