How to Get There
We wanted to stay outside of the city, remote and far from the noise from carneval, but by day we got into the city and had a blast. They organized us a private transportation that brought us wherever we wanted to go, and the driver Jose who joined us for 4 days knew where to go, same for the restaurants he recommended. The resort is like any other Sheraton hotel we've been to so far, elegant and the service is professional. Very recommendable to stay here if you wish some relaxed nights next to the crazy days
The Sheraton Rio de Janeiro is located at the End of Leblon facing Vidigal. Its location is bait remote but unique at the same time. No other hotel in Rio de Janeiro offers a quasi private beach directly in fron of the hotel. The pool area is very big. Restaurants, bars, a health club and gym allow you not to leave the hotel. It is more like a resort. The personal can be helpful when you are lucky. Unfortunately the hotel is very big and so an individual service is hard to be offered unless you have a high status in their loyalty program.
This hotel has very good rooms and facilities for vacationers in Rio de Janeiro. It is ideal for those who would like to stay in a comfortable room, and enjoy swimming and relaxing at pool side and private beach.
Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel is not for those who would like to walk out of the hotel to nearby restaurants, shops or other attractions, because it is somewhat isolated and self-contained resort hotel. Taxi or Car service is needed to go to a city center or well known city attractions.
The hotel does offer free shuttle service to the nearby beaches and shopping district which are good for occasional outings. If your destination is the last stop near a shopping mall, you can stay on the shuttle van. But if your destination is one of the Rio's beaches en route, you need to be careful. The shuttle van does not stop at all the stops indicated by the shuttle information sheet. Instead, it just passes by the stops where no one requests stop or no one is standing at the stop waiting for the shuttle, making it somewhat difficult to tell if the shuttle has reached the desired destination. The shuttle's windows are not clean, making it harder to see the landmarks outside. Since shuttle drivers generally understand only Portuguese, you need to ask for fellow passengers who can translate English to Portuguese to communicate with the driver.
Service by the hotel staff members was excellent, and the hotel's facilities were very good. My room at the hotel was a large room with ocean view and balcony. The room was clean, and bed was comfortable. The room had modern amenities expected from a five star hotel. [my attached pictures of the room and surroundings]. Breakfast in the hotel's elegant breakfast room was great, and hotel's other restaurants and huge outdoor swimming pool complex were ready to please all the guests who came to enjoy a resort style hotel.
As with others, they just emailed out of the blue to cancel the reservation due to "natural disaster"... Funny how no other hotel in Rio seems to be suffering from a natural disaster. They're just using that phrase to avoid any compensation. Shocking service from Marriott group. They just don't care. Not only will I avoid this hotel at all costs but I will avoid Marriott group hotels because that is NOT the way to treat customers. IHG would never treat me like that - I'll stick with them in future.
Check in was prompt. Room was clean and had the A/C already set. Bathroom was spotless.
This particular room had no plugs for US style electronics cords so ask for an adaptor or bring one of your own.
Taking an Uber to the downtown are town was very, very inexpensive. Less than $2.00 U.S.
On site restaurant for breakfast was excellent.
I do recommend this hotel.
