How to Get There
PortoBay Rio has been an excellent experience. The two major assets of this place is the location, right in the middle of Copacabana, and the staff.
Specifically I would like to mention the reception team, the coffee waiter (Carlos) who is amazing and one big smile every morning, but also the two doormen / bellboys who helped us a lot during our stay.
Upon arrival we were greeted with champagne and even though we were quite early, one of our rooms were quickly made available for us - a very nice gesture.
The hotel is a clone of a beachfront hotel and a city hotel and offers free beach chairs. Although recent renovations has been done in some rooms, they are still a little warn.
In our bathroom e.g. the plug in the sink was just laying there, broken. Additionally you should expect a lot of noise from the street even if you book a room like ours ... in the 8th and 10th floor. And although they offer a Nespresso machine in the suites they only offer the capsules for sale, which seems a bit cheap. Finally I would have expected a bottle of water in the room since the tap water is not good for drinking.
Family trip to Carnaval! Two triple rooms for 6 people was perfect. Hotel in a great location and the right size to make you feel at home. Breakfasts were fantastic with all the fresh fruit and great views from the restaurant . Services were superb at all levels from the front desk to the beach. Appreciated all inclusive services for the pool and beach. Congratulations for a job well done!! Hope to see you in the future
My husband and I booked Portobay to enjoy the infamous carnaval!! We stayed a total of 5 nights.
The hotel is perfectly located in the middle of Copacabana beach! Upon arrival we checked in and were greeted with a glass of champagne! Perfect way to kick off our stay! We went up to our room on the 12th floor. Once getting off the elevator we could definitely smell a musty odor. (I thought okay, I would expect a little bit of this smell as it IS Oceanside after-all). But once we entered our room, the musty/moldy smell was even worse!—but my gosh that beautiful view out our balcony was amazing!! PortoBay is one of the few hotels that offer a balcony view(which in my opinion makes this your obvious choice) You step out above the hustle and bustle and can see in either direction all that is going on! Enjoy the ocean view and breeze in your face—yesssss pleaseeee!!!
SO I did call the front desk to question the strong smell in the room, and they came up immediately to check it out. The staff then said that they would spray the room to help(however I knew this would not fix the problem...) the slider door to our balcony did not quite shut all the way-just a smidge open-but enough that the warm air from outside and the air conditioning from inside was causing such a musty moldy smell. I questioned if we could switch rooms, but unfortunately there were none available that first night. I was told to call back the next day in the morning, which I did—and there was a new room available just one floor up from ours. The staff was more than happy to switch rooms and help with moving our luggage. PHEW! The second room was SO much better...! So after this little hiccup things were smooth!
We had breakfast everyday at the hotel. I thought they had a lovely spread with just about anything you could want...! My husband wished they had a little bit of change each day. Everyday was the same thing! But there was A LOT to chose from so it was okay in my eyes..!
The rooftop pool was cool. Somewhat small area but when we visited we had no problem getting 2 lounge chairs to relax in. I did not swim in the pool, but the water felt nice. And just FYI it is only max 3 feet deep( enough to cool off in!) there’s a little mini bar up there..the staff will serve you drinks all day long!
The staff at the front desk were always pleasant and ready to answer questions and gave us good tips when we asked.
Check out was flawless and if you have a later flight they have no problem holding your bags until you are ready to leave and you are still able to use the pool and the chairs/towels on the beach if you want to!(which we did) so that was great!
They have transport to the airport waiting for you as long as you give them a heads up for a set price which was fair and I would recommend!
Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel to others, and I would definitely stay here again!
Thank you Portobay for a wonderful stay!
Stayed here in the middle of January, a lovely hotel, booked room with balcony, great view of Copacabana beach, breakfast good, meal in restaurant good but....
Building work started just after 9 am and continued throughout the day until 5pm. There was no escape from the constant drilling which was all down one side of the hotel whilst we were there. It was not possible to sit by the pool as it appeared the drilling was on that floor or just below, even in our room the drilling noise continued.
We booked direct with hotel and were not advised of renovations, no notice in reception advising or apologising for inconvenience or noise, we asked to speak to manager but one was not available. Reception said it would be complete by the friday yet we were in Copacabana the following week staying elsewhere and noticed it was still ongoing. I emailed the manager on my return for an explanation and never received a reply . Very disappointing.
Without the building works i would be happy to recommend this hotel but on this occasion i felt very let down.
First time my boyfriend and I have visited Rio and let's say thank goodness we booked our hotel stay at Portobay Rio!This stay was during Carnival and there was a lot going on. But PortoBay was always there to steer us to the right direction when we had questions. The hotel its self is very well maintained, clean and very nice. The rooftop was a great place to start your day or unwind at the end of the day by the pool or pool bar. The waitstaff and bartenders were amazing! Fernanda, Jose, Wellington and the rest of the staff who worked by the pool made our stay very memorable and made us feel at home. Thank you for that! The front desk crew were amazing as well. Always answered our questions and gave us tips on where to go eat. The morning, afternoon and overnight front desk staff really showed exceptional hospitality and each and every one of them always had a smile on their face. In regards to the breakfast buffet, the food was spectacular and it was so delicious. Want breakfast with a view? This is the place to be for that. All I can say is PortoBay Hotel made our experience in Rio one to remember! You will not be disappointed!!
