High-rise beauty overlooking one of Rio’s most famous beaches, with panoramic views from the rooftop pool

The Lowdown

It doesn’t get much more iconic Rio than this: a contemporary, sexy hotel fronting one of the city’s most famous beaches, Copacabana, and within strolling distance of another, Ipanema. The 200-room Miramar offers butler service and pool and beach attendants on hand to cater to guests’ every vacation whim. The lobby restaurant, Sá, offers a primer in local Brazilian cuisine (Carioca, which is also the term for Rio’s inhabitants). Relax under an umbrella on the wide, sandy beach in front of the hotel, or retire to the rooftop to work out in the fitness center, sweat it out in the sauna or just laze with a caipirinha by the infinity pool.

In the Area

Drag yourself away from the beach to take in a performance at the magnificent Municipal Theater in nearby downtown Rio. This Belle Epoque opera house, modeled on the Paris Opera, offers a year-round program and daily guided tours. Indulge your carnivore instincts at a churrascaria, Brazil’s version of BBQ; the Ipanema branch of the famed Porcão Rio offers a groaning buffet of grilled meats that’s sure to hit the spot. After dark sample some of Rio’s famous nightlife, which encompasses everything from casual botequim (bars or cafés) to high-octane discos, many situated on Atlantica Avenue, within staggering distance of the hotel.

Good choice for Copacabana beach
Reviewed 2 days ago

We had a great 3 night stay at the miramar hotel. The hotel has a good location towards the south side of Copacabana Beach near numerous restaurants and walking distance to Ipanema. First impressions were good with friendly service at the check in desk and welcome champagne.

We had booked a superior room and were promised a partial sea view. Our initial room did indeed have such a view, but we were forced to change it because we could hear everything in the adjoining room. Management were helpful in helping us find a more suitable room. However I must say do not be fooled by the word ‘superior’. Our superior room was in fact quite small, although well appointed with the expected 5* amenities.

The star attraction of the hotel is the rooftop infinity swimming pool with breathtaking views of Copacabana Beach and the sugar loaf mountain. Perhaps more striking was the favela you can see just a couple of blocks behind the hotel. Don’t be put off though- the surrounding area feels quite safe and we experienced no trouble. A couple of improvements could be made to the pool area however. First of all to the mangement - please heat the pool! There is no point having the pool if if it’s too cold to get in comfortably. Also there were no umbrellas available for shade beside the pool.

Breakfast was special at the miramar with a wide variety of choices, including for vegetarians. The omelette station was particularly good.

The hotel provides complimentary deck chairs and umbrellas for use on Copacabana Beach, but perhaps they could employ more staff to keep away the hawkers. We must have been offered the same dodgy sunglasses 15 times in the 2 hours we spent on the beach on a Monday morning.

Overall a very good hotel enviably located and up to 5* standards. A good choice if staying on Copacabana Beach as the numerous positive review testify. We felt vindicated picking this hotel over some more well known chains having stayed here.

As clearly stated in my photo...our reservation says superior executive ocean front, the lady on the desk who clearly had a very loud voice, insisted we didn’t, myself and my son who don’t like confrontation at the best of times, were feeling very embarrassed about the situation because all the other guests were looking at us. She also said our room was ready half an hour earlier and we could go straight in it and she wouldn’t charge us...wow!! Three moves later after speaking with the manager. We finally got the room we had paid for in the first place!! Please check what you have paid for. Fantastic location!! Lovely breakfast!! Nice clean rooms. Also take on board... !!!!! I had my necklace locked up in the safe for the six days we were there, our taxi had just arrived to take us to the airport, I stupidly put my necklace on!! letting my guard down for two seconds, went outside and two guys ripped it of my neck!! Lots of of hidden dangers just be aware all the time!! Still didn’t spoil what was an amazing holiday! By the way...we checked out fifteen minutes early and never got a refund!! ☺️

Excellent hotel, one of the best I've stayed in

We booked to stay here based on the reviews, location and the relatively inexpensive price for this quality of hotel and we were not disappointed. From the moment of arrival when we were greeted with a glass of champagne right through to the end of our stay when they held on to our bags while we spent the day by the pool to take advantage of a hot and sunny day, service and quality was faultless.

We were in room 512 which is round the side (you could see the sea if you looked out of the window to the right!) which meant it was nice and quiet at night. The bed was massive and extremely comfortable (one of the best hotel beds I've slept in) and the fixture and fittings of the room were spotlessly clean and clearly well maintained. The bathroom was equally as clean and comfortable to use.

We booked a room only deal so can't comment on breakfast, but we ate by the pool and the food was good. The pool itself is small but lovely with fantastic views over Copacabana and Sugar Loaf and the staff were very friendly and attentive.

One of the best hotels I've stayed in, particularly for the money.

Excellent Hotel

Great location south end of Copacabana beach, very close to Ipanema. Easy walking access to Ipanema, Leblon and subway station. Staff were excellent, breakfast fantastic, rooftop pool and bar very clean and good service. Would definitely return to this hotel for future visits. Tourists advised not to venture furrher than one street back. Leblon area was a safer area for visiting, drinking and eating, and had less hawkers.

Great hotel in the heart of Copacabana

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Windsor miramar, we had an excellent stay.

The location is perfect, you are less than 50 metres from Copacabana Beach and as an added bonus there’s even a section of beach dedicated to hotel guests. You’re able to get an umbrella and deck chairs all set up for no extra cost.

The hotel staff are great, they speak good English and provide excellent service. We also found that there were always staff available to help so there was no waiting time to get questions answered.

Our room was lovely, very comfortable bed, mini bar, good shower, digital TV and very spacious. We were on the 5th floor and found it to be quiet which was surprising given the proximity to the beach.

We had breakfast included in our room rate, and it was amazing! The selection was very extensive including an omelette station, pancakes, sparkling wine, fruit, cooked breakfast, cereals, breads, meats. Cheeses... the list goes on. It was brilliant.

I hope I get to come back to Rio, and I’ll be staying here if I do!
