Historic 1912 Back Bay grande dame facing Copley square, with nipped-and-tucked interiors and superior service
If this Beantown landmark bears even the slightest resemblance to New York’s Plaza Hotel, it’s no coincidence: both early 20th-century masterpieces were designed by architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, who had a penchant for French and Venetian Renaissance flourishes. In celebration of the hotel’s centennial in 2012, a $20 million renovation overhauled the 383 guest rooms to include mod cons like USB ports and Keurig coffee makers and transformed the property’s iconic old-school cocktail lair, The Oak Room, into an up-to-date industrially-themed bistro (the 83-foot copper-topped bar is especially striking) while swapping its previous raw bar with fresh, farm-to-table fare. Fortunately, certain trademark adornments, like trompe l’oeil paintings on the gilded ceilings above the 5,000-square-foot lobby and period antiques, still remain. Also intact is the Fairmont’s signature, over-the-top service: guests can rent BMW bikes, concierges regularly set up dog walks with the resident pet for those missing their canine companions, and, upon request, mornings can be kick-started with rooftop yoga at the state-of-the-art gym.
In the Area
Situated in Copley Plaza (a 15-minute drive from Logan Airport), just a block from Amtrak’s Acela Back Bay Station, this hotel makes a serious case for a weekend getaway. Once you’re here, browse the boutiques on nearby Newbury Street, wander the cobblestoned alleys of Beacon Hill, or picnic at Boston Common. For families, the Fairmont regularly offers packages that include tickets to the Boston Children’s Museum and the New England Aquarium. On Sundays, be sure to check out SoWa Vintage Market, less than a mile from the hotel, and sift through mid-century modern knick-knacks and flapper dresses until you find a treasure that calls your name.
