Equine-themed hacienda near Boquete with on-tap river adventures, tropical gardens and volcano views
Originally built as a fancy stable, this boutique hacienda still celebrates all things equine — think bronze horse statuettes, a cowhide rug, and rooms named for the former barn residents (Combita, Rosita and more). Wrought iron, regal columns and colonial arches abound, as do tasteful furnishings picked up around South and Central America, including an impressive snakewood dining set carved by hand in Argentina.
Bed & Bath
Separate from the main hotel, three Deluxe Coffee Cottages are hidden among wildflowers and coffee plants. The design embraces nature: Dark wood furnishings blend with shiny apricot duvets, and private balconies face the verdant hillside. Upgrade to a Deluxe Suite for gorgeous vaulted, wood-paneled ceilings, enormous windows and dainty sitting rooms. All bathrooms have double sinks and powerful showers.
What this hotel currently lacks in common amenities — no pool, restaurant or spa — it makes up for with unexpected delights. A stroll in the manicured gardens past umbrella plants, hydrangeas and dahlias brings guests to a treehouse that will eventually be a restaurant. For now, though, a small, kindly kitchen staff prepares a free breakfast of local tropical fruits and rich coffee from the hotel’s plantation, along with delectable eggs, pancakes and french toast.
