The Review

Just one hour from Prague, on a hill above its namesake hamlet, the 17th-century Chateau Mcely was once the countryside retreat of the wealthy, aristocratic Thurn-Taxis family and later home to Italian royals. But today it’s a stylish eco-escape bringing new visitors to this little-explored side of the Czech Republic.

{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/editorialreviews/10377/pgal-17355-1300375536-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”A spring-fed swimming lake and traditional sauna are at the heart of the fairytale gardens.”}Left in a state of disrepair for more than 50 years, the crumbling chateau was rediscovered in 2001 and painstakingly transformed into a fairytale escape by its American owners, in a process that took more than five years. The interiors retain a traditional medley of rich brocade, marble and other 17th-century flourishes (especially in the 2,000-book library), but behind the scenes is a modern and environmentally aware approach. Wood chips fuel the heating system, the swimming pool is fed and filtered by a natural spring, and rainwater irrigates the ample English garden.

Beautiful views of the landscaped gardens and St. George Forest come standard in the 23 spacious rooms and suites, but all are individually designed, sharing only a penchant for sumptuous silks and antique furnishings. Spread across two floors, each guestroom has a unique name, like Southern Seas, Africa, Orient or Mark Twain — the latter because the famous author once stayed at the chateau.

On my stay I was welcomed to the property with an elixir made from herbs found in the ancient forest — a use of foraged ingredients that is a bit of a habit here. At the on-site restaurant, Piano Nobile, chef Jan Sterba uses forest-grown ingredients in recipes adapted from the days of the Thurn-Taxis family, as well as from the pages of the owner’s Italian grandmother’s cookbook. The restaurant is up there with the best in the Czech Republic, so reservations are essential — especially for a table on the beautiful hilltop terrace.

During the daytime, make the most of the countryside and hike the forest trails, picnic on the lawn (the restaurant can prepare it for you) or take a carriage ride around the property. Or, for real pampering, choose a treatment in the three-suite spa; one suite has a custom-designed tub for two, a wood-burning fireplace and views of the natural swimming pool and forest.

Beautiful, but could be better

The chateau is beautiful, lovely rooms and gardens. The staff are very friendly, service was great. There are a number of things that could be improved though, hence 3 stars. The bathroom did not have a proper shower, only a bath with a handheld shower head. The spa treatments were fine, but nothing special and extremely expensive for what they were. I would not recommend the spa for this reason. The restaurant claims to be rated in the top 10 in the country and while it was nice it was also nothing special and very expensive, not even in the top 50 I have been to in the country. The breakfast was nice, but you had to pay extra for coffee, which was not that great, you could tell from the coffee grounds left at the bottom of the cup that the machine was not properly maintained and the coffee was old, it had no Kraemer at all. This may sound a bit fussy and I will admit that I am,but if you are paying a premium as you do at this hotel then I would expect more.

Utter bliss. Anyone who takes the trouble to highlight the latin names on every different species of tree is a hero.

Mcely was the halfway point in our family roadtrip across Europe. We arrived at lunchtime and were immediately at ease thanks to the wonderful welcome and service we received from the front desk and the team in the restaurant. We then had a wonderful 24 hour refreshing reboot in this very special place. Everything had been brilliantly thought through and executed. We managed to fit in: two swims in the 'lake' with our children diving for tadpoles, tennis, football on the lovely lawn, chess, a delicious dinner and breakfast, and an outdoor screening of Roman Holiday, with popcorn. The room was super comfortable and just what we needed after two weeks on the road.

Château Mcely is an uncompromising forest retreat not far from Prague

Resting upon a bluff overlooking Mcely is the five-star Chateau Mcely hotel. The Chateau is a perfect destination for romantic getaways, a spa break, weddings and also very welcoming to families with children. The hotel’s interior is impeccably furnished in “modern château” style, with each of its 23 rooms individually and uniquely decorated.

In addition to the tantalizing restaurant, the Château is also home to the natural herbal Mcely Boutique Spa, which includes the family’s own line of pure natural skincare products. The spa also features a sauna with outdoor whirlpool, natural biotopical swimming lake, and fitness center. We unfortunately didn’t have the time to partake in the spa, but the services were certainly enticing.
