The Review

Just one hour from Prague, on a hill above its namesake hamlet, the 17th-century Chateau Mcely was once the countryside retreat of the wealthy, aristocratic Thurn-Taxis family and later home to Italian royals. But today it’s a stylish eco-escape bringing new visitors to this little-explored side of the Czech Republic.

{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/editorialreviews/10377/pgal-17355-1300375536-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”A spring-fed swimming lake and traditional sauna are at the heart of the fairytale gardens.”}Left in a state of disrepair for more than 50 years, the crumbling chateau was rediscovered in 2001 and painstakingly transformed into a fairytale escape by its American owners, in a process that took more than five years. The interiors retain a traditional medley of rich brocade, marble and other 17th-century flourishes (especially in the 2,000-book library), but behind the scenes is a modern and environmentally aware approach. Wood chips fuel the heating system, the swimming pool is fed and filtered by a natural spring, and rainwater irrigates the ample English garden.

Beautiful views of the landscaped gardens and St. George Forest come standard in the 23 spacious rooms and suites, but all are individually designed, sharing only a penchant for sumptuous silks and antique furnishings. Spread across two floors, each guestroom has a unique name, like Southern Seas, Africa, Orient or Mark Twain — the latter because the famous author once stayed at the chateau.

On my stay I was welcomed to the property with an elixir made from herbs found in the ancient forest — a use of foraged ingredients that is a bit of a habit here. At the on-site restaurant, Piano Nobile, chef Jan Sterba uses forest-grown ingredients in recipes adapted from the days of the Thurn-Taxis family, as well as from the pages of the owner’s Italian grandmother’s cookbook. The restaurant is up there with the best in the Czech Republic, so reservations are essential — especially for a table on the beautiful hilltop terrace.

During the daytime, make the most of the countryside and hike the forest trails, picnic on the lawn (the restaurant can prepare it for you) or take a carriage ride around the property. Or, for real pampering, choose a treatment in the three-suite spa; one suite has a custom-designed tub for two, a wood-burning fireplace and views of the natural swimming pool and forest.

Managed our daughter's wedding without a flaw
Reviewed 3 months ago

We rented the entire facility for two nights in connection with our daughter's wedding. The facility, grounds, staff, food were all terrific. When we arrived, after dark, there was a 3 foot high, 3 dimensional, illuminated "sign" that spelled "LOVE." My daughter told me that the pillows in their room were embroidered with their initials. There were a number of such unexpected, thoughtful touches throughout our stay. We had a fairly large number of very young children as part of our party. They were well treated and had a ball - in the spring fed pool, in the playground, etc. The setting, both the chateau and its views were also terrific. My only negative comment is that my daughter and her friends are still young enough to party until 4:00 a.m. The building, while large, is not so large that the noise from the lounge didn't make it in its full exuberance to the bedrooms.

I should also add that my daughter married a citizen of the Czech Republic. The wedding coordinator at the Chateau handled whatever bureaucratic complications that might have arisen with an international wedding, without it being a strain for bride or groom.

In Chateau Mcely you can feel 5 star atmosphere on each step. Staff is very kind and professional, they serve top notch gastronomy (highly recommend their steak and Porto wine), big attention to detail, excellence in customer service. The staff pampered me and I felt like in the heaven. Chateau area and the spa services are also a great choice if you want to clear your head and relax. I spent 2 wonderful days there, which I will remeber forever and I will definitely come back!

We stayed i Ch. Mcely from Friday evening till Sunday afternoon. It was great stay. Staff are very kind and fulfilled all our wishes. Room Africa was clean, quiet and equipment was beautiful and Mcely Bouget cosmetics is great. We also try private whirlpool and sauna, great place for relax and romantic time with partner. I had back massage which was very professional a help me with stiif back. Breakfast are delicious.
Lunch and dinner in restaurant were also great. But the choice is little bit limited. And some staff in restaurant are affected. Fortunately not everybody.

Book the Tasting menu at the restaurant for exceptional dinner.

We have had a relaxing weekend in this 18 century refurbished luxury summer residence of an aristocratic family of Thurn-Taxis. It is modeled on a California Wellness centers with natural pool, meditation forest, gardens, ancient trees and dedicated massage pavilion. Our Degustazione dinner at the restaurant was of Michelin quality. The selection of dishes, wine paring and impeccable service were truly a memorable culinary experience. Compliments to the chef and our waiter.
