The Review

Just one hour from Prague, on a hill above its namesake hamlet, the 17th-century Chateau Mcely was once the countryside retreat of the wealthy, aristocratic Thurn-Taxis family and later home to Italian royals. But today it’s a stylish eco-escape bringing new visitors to this little-explored side of the Czech Republic.

{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/editorialreviews/10377/pgal-17355-1300375536-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”A spring-fed swimming lake and traditional sauna are at the heart of the fairytale gardens.”}Left in a state of disrepair for more than 50 years, the crumbling chateau was rediscovered in 2001 and painstakingly transformed into a fairytale escape by its American owners, in a process that took more than five years. The interiors retain a traditional medley of rich brocade, marble and other 17th-century flourishes (especially in the 2,000-book library), but behind the scenes is a modern and environmentally aware approach. Wood chips fuel the heating system, the swimming pool is fed and filtered by a natural spring, and rainwater irrigates the ample English garden.

Beautiful views of the landscaped gardens and St. George Forest come standard in the 23 spacious rooms and suites, but all are individually designed, sharing only a penchant for sumptuous silks and antique furnishings. Spread across two floors, each guestroom has a unique name, like Southern Seas, Africa, Orient or Mark Twain — the latter because the famous author once stayed at the chateau.

On my stay I was welcomed to the property with an elixir made from herbs found in the ancient forest — a use of foraged ingredients that is a bit of a habit here. At the on-site restaurant, Piano Nobile, chef Jan Sterba uses forest-grown ingredients in recipes adapted from the days of the Thurn-Taxis family, as well as from the pages of the owner’s Italian grandmother’s cookbook. The restaurant is up there with the best in the Czech Republic, so reservations are essential — especially for a table on the beautiful hilltop terrace.

During the daytime, make the most of the countryside and hike the forest trails, picnic on the lawn (the restaurant can prepare it for you) or take a carriage ride around the property. Or, for real pampering, choose a treatment in the three-suite spa; one suite has a custom-designed tub for two, a wood-burning fireplace and views of the natural swimming pool and forest.

This is a very special place. We went for a wedding and it was incredible. The location; service; food; rooms; ambience - world class and could not be bettered. We surrounding gardens and forest are spectacular and just the spot for a special occasion or a long rest.

Top notch birthday-wedding day

I have visited this place many times, and in every period of the year, and each time was different. Last visit we had here was kind of disappointing but still it is a very beautiful place in the Czech Republic. Therefore when we decided we will get married, we have never had in mind other place than this one, as it had to be in Czech (otherwise France would be option number one). From that moment we knew, it was the right choice. At Mcely Chateau they a have wedding coordinator Jana who is very communicative, so you do not need to wait for hours or days for reply, which is very helpful, when you need stuff to be done. If you need any help, Jana will help you with anything. Our wedding was a secret one, and we did not want a big wedding, so I had not much work as other brides but it was good experience. When we arrived on our wedding day, everybody was very attentive (not like the last time), not grumpy etc. It was the best experience I had so far at this Chateau, and I am so happy to say that I had the best wedding day, and I would not change a thing :). They also were fine with our special adjustments such as making bonfire etc.

Excelent surprise

We stayed for one night in this superb place. It was my birthday gift I got year before including dinner and spa procedure in one package. Staff is excellent, well educated and providing piece of art in hotel service. Jan Sterba like Cheff served French cousine with no prompts. Spa ritual and massages were really pleasant and we enjoy them well as same as outdoor sauna and pool. Room was named Equator and equipped with french
clayware and queensize bed. We were satisfied in all ditections. We realy recommend to escape this busy age to this generous place.

Exceeded our expectations

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we cannot say one negative thing about our stay.
Our car was parked for us, our luggage was taken direct to our room, our room was a like a home from home for the weekend and even our dog was taken care of.
As for the staff - FANTASTIC!!!!! Every member of the Chateau Mcely team were welcoming, friendly and very knowledgeable. They took the time to ensure we were happy and cared for and nothing was too much trouble. They were always available to assist us.
Even the 'hidden' staff such as housekeeping, kitchen and grounds men did amazing jobs - what a great team you have!
The grounds, views and surroundings are gorgeous.
Our treatments were amazing.
We had such an unforgettable weekend and we cannot wait to return.
Thank you Chateau Mcely, we’ll be back!

No value for money. Very disappointing.

* There was no free space available for us to use the jacuzzi and the spa, although it was included in the price. The staff tried to help and offered us to use it after working hours for 800czk (not cool), other options were offered after I complained (like entrance at 23:30 for free, which is way too late for normal people), or using steam room at 21:30 (also late and was not very desirable by us), etc. It was not mentioned that no capacity in the spa facilities might occur, and we counted on it, so we were very very disappointed. At least they could compensate us with a partial refund - but no. We left sad and unsatisfied. * Breakfast was quite poor for 5 stars hotel. Watery scrambled egg, very limited variety of pastries and sweets, not much veggies and fruits either. If you wanted any additional food you needed to pay (for orange juice for example..). * Dinner was way overpriced - Vegetarian main dish for 450 czk (which was very salty). Desert for 290 czk, non alcoholic cocktail (which i asked to be sweet, but was actually bitter) for 275 czk, 0.3l beer for 95 czk, bottle of sparkling water for 100 czk. Quite overpriced. * Minibar snacks 99 czk each (no price list at the room at all, we realized it only on check out. * We left the room after breakfast and hanged the sign of “cleaning required”, when we arrived at around 17:00 the room was not cleaned. * The corridor what quite noisy most of the time * The park was cute, but nothing much to see or do. * Room was very small, with bery small single window so to call it “Superior” is quite over complementary. * When we checked out we weren’t even asked if we enjoyed our stay. We got a leftover bread from breakfast and the bill, and that’s it. Bottom line - as a frequent traveler all over Europe and the world, for 5 stars luxury hotel in Europe, I would expect for way much more. Very disappointed, will definitely not come again and will recommend others to stay away.

The only things I appreciated:
* Room was ready for us at 13:00 when we arrived. * Shampoo, shower gel, conditioner, bath oil, body lotion, sleepers, towels, hair dryer, vanity sets in the room. * Free Rajec water, several capsules of coffee and tea, 2 granola bars and some pieces of apple crisps. * We also got bottle of wine for our anniversary. * Deserts at the restaurant were fairly good.
