Overview

The Review

Just one hour from Prague, on a hill above its namesake hamlet, the 17th-century Chateau Mcely was once the countryside retreat of the wealthy, aristocratic Thurn-Taxis family and later home to Italian royals. But today it’s a stylish eco-escape bringing new visitors to this little-explored side of the Czech Republic.

{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/editorialreviews/10377/pgal-17355-1300375536-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”A spring-fed swimming lake and traditional sauna are at the heart of the fairytale gardens.”}Left in a state of disrepair for more than 50 years, the crumbling chateau was rediscovered in 2001 and painstakingly transformed into a fairytale escape by its American owners, in a process that took more than five years. The interiors retain a traditional medley of rich brocade, marble and other 17th-century flourishes (especially in the 2,000-book library), but behind the scenes is a modern and environmentally aware approach. Wood chips fuel the heating system, the swimming pool is fed and filtered by a natural spring, and rainwater irrigates the ample English garden.

Beautiful views of the landscaped gardens and St. George Forest come standard in the 23 spacious rooms and suites, but all are individually designed, sharing only a penchant for sumptuous silks and antique furnishings. Spread across two floors, each guestroom has a unique name, like Southern Seas, Africa, Orient or Mark Twain — the latter because the famous author once stayed at the chateau.

On my stay I was welcomed to the property with an elixir made from herbs found in the ancient forest — a use of foraged ingredients that is a bit of a habit here. At the on-site restaurant, Piano Nobile, chef Jan Sterba uses forest-grown ingredients in recipes adapted from the days of the Thurn-Taxis family, as well as from the pages of the owner’s Italian grandmother’s cookbook. The restaurant is up there with the best in the Czech Republic, so reservations are essential — especially for a table on the beautiful hilltop terrace.

During the daytime, make the most of the countryside and hike the forest trails, picnic on the lawn (the restaurant can prepare it for you) or take a carriage ride around the property. Or, for real pampering, choose a treatment in the three-suite spa; one suite has a custom-designed tub for two, a wood-burning fireplace and views of the natural swimming pool and forest.

My family and I have a special relationship with this wonderful chateaux. This time, We have returned to spend a weekend with our children and we were very happy to discover that everything in this establishment is still great if not better than the last time we visited. The staff, the restaurant, the service as such was really great. We felt cosy and welcomed.
I highly recommend this retreat for it is a gem among a magical forest!

A Fairy Tale

I was lucky enough to have my small, wedding at the chateau. To summarise, the entire experience was incredible. We had only myself, my husband and my parents. Just four people travelling to a country we had never visited and a chateau we had never seen.

From the start, Jana was incredibly helpful. I can not sing her praises enough. At each stage of the process she made sure we had as much advice and assistance as we needed. She also fully respected our wish to keep the ceremony plain and simple in an effort to save costs. If you are looking to book a wedding, Jana will make it as headache free as possible.

The Chateau itself is just as beautiful as the photos show. Regal, majestic and graceful. We experienced some outstanding autumn colors. We fully took advantage of the trip, using all the amenities including the jacuzzi, sauna, chessboard, croquet set, restaurant, forest paths, massages etc. Everything was magical.

From a hotel experience, it was also lovely. L'Occitane products free for guests as shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Generous and delicious breakfast each day of fruits, pastries, eggs and meats etc. Nearby forest with walks and paths to explore. And helpful staff that are attentive and polite.

I genuinely feel like I somehow achieved my fairy tale wedding. If you are seeking a true experience, dont hesitate to visit this beautiful place. Don't worry if you have never been to Czech or to the Chateau.

One day, I hope we will be back!!
