Secluded hilltop hotel near Bodrum, with a hip beach club, a hot restaurant and poolside cabanas
In Bodrum's Türkbükü, a tiny strip of high-end boutiques and restaurants set on a curve around a deep bay best accessed by boat (or by diving off the wooden piers), Macakizi Hotel occupies one of the area's best spots. Meaning “Queen of Spades” in Turkish, this secluded 81-room retreat shimmers like a waterside palace, making guests feel like 21st-century royalty. All three parts of the resort — a hotel, a world-class restaurant and a hip-happening beach club — recline on the side of a hill covered with hot-pink bougainvillea and white-hot sunlight.
Bed and Bath
The quiet rooms and suites sit at the top of the hill. The decor is plush and modern, with attractive private balconies and patios. Pale walls are dotted with retro-look canvas prints, colorful throw cushions break up the sleek white color scheme and natural wood and mirrors are used to great effect. TVs are by Bose and Aqua Di Parma products feature in the open-plan marble bathrooms. Opt for a room on the Upper Deck for superior views of the sea or the lush gardens.
A small maze of flower-decked paths takes you to the open-air restaurant (where the free breakfast includes omelets made to order) and the beach with its large bar and various sunbathing and swimming piers. En route you’ll pass the lovely, underused pool, the well-attended Turkish bath and a small gym. The real action is at the square-sided beachside bar — the place to be, to see and to be seen by all the right people (some of whom are household names). Service is exceptional, starting with the beach concierge, who helps hotel guests secure the best daybeds every morning. Waiters amble unobtrusively around in their khaki and white outfits, fluffing pillows, bringing fresh towels and water, and mind-reading.
In the Area
A string of lovely villages encircle the peninsula; a half-hour drive takes you to Gumusluk for wonderful fish restaurants and a whole new realm of handicrafts. With more than 200 active archeological sites in Turkey, you’re never far from the ancient action. The 15th-century Bodrum Castle, a fantastic site in its own right, hosts the Museum of Underwater Archeology, with a life-size shipwreck model and real artifacts. A bevy of wooden yachts and small sailboats departs regularly from Türkbükü. Take a day sail to a Greek Island or just around the Bodrum peninsula. After dinner slip into something flattering and slither on down a few hundred yards to the Ship Ahoy nightclub or other walkable dance spots, where the party continues.
