A boutique, adults-only hideaway outside Puerto Vallarta, offering plenty of peace and privacy
Escape to la la land at the Puerto Vallarta-area Villa Lala, which may well have you wondering if you’re awake or dreaming. TripAdvisor reviewers frequently liken this boutique getaway to paradise, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s private, first of all – there are a total of four suites, open to adults only, set in the quiet, remote space between Sierra Madre Occidental mountains and the protected bay of Boca de Tomatlán. You’ll feel as if you have the beach, the organic garden and the Zen Garden and its pond almost completely to yourself.
Then, there are the impossibly exotic flora and fauna you’ll find within these gardens and waters. There’s plenty of sea life in the bay, including whales in winter, dolphins and stingrays; the organic and Zen gardens collectively hold coconut palms, mango trees, pineapple plants, prickly-pear cacti, parrots, pelicans, armadillos and iguanas. Also discover a heated infinity pool, a private dock, a sand terrace and a bayfront sunset terrace and palapa bar. Who said isolation wasn’t splendid?
This property has just four accommodations, all of them suites, each showing off its own layout and personality. They begin at 290 square feet and all dress their plush premium mattresses in 1,800-thread-count Egyptian-cotton sheets. On the ground floor, the 290-square-foot Garden Terrace Junior suite holds a queen bed and small terrace; it offers direct access to the garden and pool area, as well as other ground-floor facilities such as the living room, dining room and palapa terrace. Up the grand staircase, you'll find the 215-square-foot Garden View Junior suite. This cozy, private abode also holds a queen bed and overlooks the garden and jungle, with a fitted mosquito screen to allow the fresh air and sounds of nature in. The highlight of this space is the gorgeous sunset view. On the same floor, you'll find the capacious Master suite, which measures 540 square feet and boasts beautiful mountain and ocean views (which you can admire right from your king-sized bed). The most luxurious option of all is the 750-square-foot, open-plan Master suite plus. Also on the second floor and with a king bed, this sumptuous space has its own terrace and a prime location which affords it gorgeous views. The upscale bathroom includes a shower, jacuzzi tub, bidet and double vanity.
The palapa terrace is where food and drinks are served at Villa Lala, with ingredients from the organic garden, whenever possible. (That is, unless you request a romantic, torch- and candlelit dinner on the beach, under the stars.) Sample aromatic fruits, like papaya, prickly pear and pineapple; organic vegetables, like tomatoes and peppers; and fresh seasonings, like rosemary, mint, garlic and basil. Pair them with a glass of wine and a beautiful sunset view, if you come in the evening. If on a special diet, be sure to inform the staff, and they’ll happily accommodate your restrictions.
Villa Lala sits between the mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental range and the protected bay at Boca de Tomatlan, which stingrays and dolphins are known to visit, as well as whales in winter. Spend your days snorkeling among colorful fish, or exploring the walking trails and lush gardens, where parrots, iguanas, raccoons, hummingbirds and butterflies dwell. You can also take a siesta in the hammock, soak in the heated bayfront infinity pool or enjoy one of the kayaks at the marina. For a change of scenery – if you can manage to tear yourself away – Puerto Vallarta is within a 45-minute drive.
