The Look
This hipster hotel by Berlin native Werner Aisslinger is designed around an urban jungle theme. Lush flora hangs and climbs from the concrete ceilings and wood pallet-effect walls, creating a connection with the Berlin Zoo located behind the property. The building itself is a dramatic revamp of the once-derelict Bikini-Haus, a 1950s office block. Being able to explore the reworking of this concrete behemoth is exciting whether you’re staying here or not.
Bed and Bath
Even the basic rooms (which start at 248 square feet) are comfortable and are kitted out with king- or queensize beds, large windows and rainfall showers. The soft bedding and felt pillows contrast with the raw concrete ceiling. The shower rooms are dark and moody, with black tiles, atmospheric lighting and heated floors. If you opt for a bigger room you get funky extras like hammocks, which you can swing in as you gaze out over the zoo through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Beyond
Regular DJ events take place in the upbeat Monkey Bar on the top floor (keep an eye out for the Live at 25 program for one-off performances ranging from hip-hop to theater). For downtime, the jungle sauna is a touch of genius; you can sweat it out on clean pine seating while looking out over the zoo through windows lined with tropical plants. The restaurant, Neni, serves upscale cuisine with a menu that draws from contemporary Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences, while the breakfast spread is something to behold; fuel up on curry wurst and smoked salmon, and wash it down with a freshly made smoothie.
In the Area
City West has been going through a revival in recent years. Although it’s not as rowdy as Kreuzberg or Neukölln in terms of nightlife, 25Hours guests will want to check out the local bars; the Berlin institution Rum Trader should be on that list, a tiny bar where you’ll find some of the city’s best cocktails. Paris Bar is another long-running spot popular with locals, while Diener Tattersall is a place to get a taste of the classic old West vibe. For cutting-edge shopping, the concept store 14oz is stocked with a bouquet of hip fashion brands.
