Revamped 19th-century mansion that brings Hollywood glamour to the heart of Berlin
Following a two-year revamp, the eagerly anticipated Hotel Zoo opened its doors on November 3, and we popped in before the official launch to check out this glam new spot on Berlin’s premier shopping boulevard, the Kurfürstendamm. The stately building began life in 1889 as a private residence and morphed into a hotel in 1911. Miraculously, it survived World War II intact, giving New York designer Dayna Lee ample opportunity to pay homage to its original features while injecting a large dose of 1920s Hollywood glamour. The hotel is anchored by its Living Room, where a chain link chandelier dangles from a lofty ceiling festooned with a lily motif. Adjacent to the lobby, the Winter Garden is an intimate outdoor space with a heated floor and a lounge vibe. The chic Grace Bar is accented with a gold leaf–covered brick wall, and the restaurant is poised to serve boundary-pushing Chinese-Italian fusion cuisine when it opens in early 2015. The guestrooms have a pale gray, cranberry and white chocolate palette and feature custom-made furniture and mod cons including Nespresso machines. The room dimensions vary because of the historic nature of the building, but all bathrooms come with twin sinks, Maison Margiela towels, custom brand toiletries and rainfall showers. Some suites have freestanding tubs.
In the Area
In the heart of the western Berlin district of Charlottenburg, Hotel Zoo has a prime location for shopping sprees and cultural immersion. Step outside and you're right on the Kurfürstendamm, Berlin’s premier retail artery, which is lined with stores ranging from Adidas to Zegna. Hip local designers have set up shop a short walk away at the sassy new Bikini Berlin, the city’s first concept mall, which is situated in a converted 1950s building near the famous zoo. On the lower floor there’s a huge glass panel with a front row view of the monkey enclosure. A bird's-eye perspective of the zoo and the Tiergarten, one of Europe’s largest urban parks, unfolds from the mall’s rooftop terrace. The splendid KaDeWe, continental Europe’s largest department store, is within strolling distance.
