Mod rooms, contemporary artworks and a French brasserie in Berlin's upscale Ku'damm neighborhood
Sleek and timelessly modern. Renowned Berlin architect Jan Kleihues pulled out all the stops to create this award-winning alchemy of art, architecture and design. Curved edges, tapered floors and Art Deco touches are reminiscent of a 1920s ocean liner, but the artwork is utterly up to date — an impressive collection of pieces by German artists dots the hotel. Warm hues, sophisticated lighting and elegant furnishings (all designed by Kleihues) create a calm and welcoming feel.
Bed and Bath
The 311 guestrooms are among the largest in Berlin. Even the smallest category (Superior) measures 400 square feet, and all rooms feature a sitting area, a walk-in closet and a spacious bathroom. They're decorated in bright shades of burgundy, forest green and chocolate and come with panoramic windows and modern art by Junior Toscanelli. Club rooms offer striking views over Berlin's rooftops and include access to the lounge for all-day snacks and drinks.
Start the day in the light-flooded breakfast room, where the impressive buffet features an apothecary-style tea selection, a live cooking station and freshly made smoothies. It’s served until 2 p.m. on weekends. The elegant Brasserie Le Faubourg serves modern takes on French classics, including a richly fragrant bouillabaisse, plus blackboard specials based on seasonal offerings. Before dinner enjoy cocktails or champagne beneath the showstopping silver-leaf ceiling of the bar, or let off some steam in the compact gym or adjacent spa.
In the Area
Berlin’s western city center is the place to shop. Hundreds of retail outlets, from Gucci and Prada to Zara and H&M line the historic Kurfürstendamm. The boulevard’s eastern end is punctuated by the bombed-out husk of the 19th-century Memorial Church, a tangible reminder of the futility of war. Zoo Station, which inspired the U2 album of that name, is nearby. Recent redevelopment in the area has attracted the sleek Bikini Berlin concept store mall and the hip 25 Hours Hotel, where you can sip a tropical cocktail at the Monkey Bar overlooking the Berlin Zoo's ape enclosure.
