A 19th-century townhouse turned eclectic boutique in central Berlin with a sultry steakhouse and whiskey bar
A former ad exec and his assistant are the brains behind The Dude, a sleek design-conscious home away from home in Berlin's Mitte district. In a townhouse that dates from 1822, this boho boutique has retained its original lofty ceilings and hardwood floors and added quirky elements dreamed up by German interior designer Uwe van Afferden; the wall art installation made from vintage suitcases is a particular highlight. The Yada-Yada cigar lounge sits next to the ’50s-style Whisper Room bar, and the dashing Brooklyn Beef Club is a former Stasi hangout turned sultry steakhouse that serves an awesome selection of more than 150 whiskeys. The 27 guestrooms are furnished with cast iron bed frames, Art Deco lounge chairs and coat racks made from industrial piping. Each has a royal blue feature wall and hipster amenities that include Molton Brown toiletries and Moleskine notebooks. The spacious Suites come with a dining area and a bathtub as well as a shower.
In the Area
South of Berlin's Mitte district, Kreuzberg is an artsy neighborhood lined with hip eateries and boutiques. For a foodie fix, pop into Markthalle Neun to load up on snacks from organic bakeries, delis and teahouses. Continuing from Alexanderplatz, Alte Schönhauser Strasse is home to eclectic design stores and kitsch retailers, and along Oranienstrasse you’ll find storefront eateries like the adorable Gerüchteküche, which serves tasty organic dishes. Try an Asian-fusion burger at Shiso Burger or, for Michelin-starred eats, book a table at Tim Raue's eponymous restaurant on Rudi Dutschke Strasse.
