Go for something out of the ordinary with a stay at Hotel BLOOM! Aptly positioned next to Brussels’ beautiful botanical gardens, this shiny, modern hotel keeps things fresh and funky, with no two rooms being alike. Each of the 287 accommodations at this TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence winner proudly sports a hand-painted mural by an up-and-coming young artist – and appropriately for the location, they were all inspired by the word “bloom.”
Elsewhere in the hotel, there’s a hip bar-cum-lounge-cum-restaurant with innovative design areas – think industrial edge meets a contemporary-art-gallery vibe. Here, you can enjoy full buffet breakfasts, tasty lunches, gourmet dinners and well-mixed cocktails. Up on the eighth floor, you can make use of a well-equipped gym and work out while taking in the great city views – which might just be a good idea, afterindulging in a homemade Belgian waffle (or two or three) from the hotel’s very own in-house waffle van.
Your XL room is spacious and individually designed, with its own unique hand-painted mural. Large windows offer a great view, and there are two plush seats, a sleek workspace and a comfortable office chair.
Smoods restaurant, combining “living room, kitchen and music,” has seven different areas to suit your mood, from Passion and Safari to Bling-Bling or Flower Power. Fresh, healthy fare is the order of the day here, from Caesar salads and vegetarian wok dishes to salmon steaks. The breakfast buffet offers a wide variety of hot and cold options, and the icing on the cake is the waffle truck parked in the middle of the restaurant, where you can make your own authentic Belgian waffles.
The hotel is located beside Brussels’ inner ring road and adjacent to the beautiful botanical gardens. From here, it’s a 20-minute walk to the city center and the Grand Place. While you’re here, check out the Stripmuseum of comic-book art, only a 10-minute walk away. The closest metro station, Botanique, is also just a few minutes away, so you won’t have any problems getting where you need to go.
How to Get There
Our host Marte was nice enough to come pick us up at the station. At the hotel she provided us with a great double room and pancakes. After touring Brussels with us and teaching us how to use public transport she came through again and got us the best spaghetti ever.
I arrived at the hotel at 6 AM. My reservation was made from the previous night. I called the day of check-in to tell them that I would only be arriving the next day to make sure the reservation does not get canceled due to "no show". They told me everything was fine - it was not.
When I checked in they had a hard time finding the reservation (turns out they didn't - keep reading). One of the guys at the counter was probably new and didn't manage so someone more experienced needed to help out. Overall it took me about 30 minutes to check in after a red-eye flight. Turns out they didn't do it right. There is an uploaded picture with the paper in which they put the key. I was too tired to notice, but it didn't have my name nor the right check-out date (I blurred out the name of the actual guest).
When I went for breakfast a couple of hours later the room did not appear on the list. I had to go back to the reception to check. Then it became apparent that the guys who checked me in put me in the wrong room. Again I had to show ID, etc. but in the end, it got sorted out. Still, not a good way to start the stay.
When I got to my room and hung up my clothes I noticed a towel hanging on top of the closet. Obviously left behind by the previous guest and not taken by the housekeeping staff. I didn't touch it (don't know where it's been), but definitely an oversight that I haven't seen at other hotels.
Oh, and the bed. It is half leaning on a kind of shelf and half on stilts. The side I was on (I didn't get a queen/king bed) kept falling as the stilts would bend over during tossing and turning. I mentioned this during check-out and they said it shouldn't be the case - I hope so as during the night I had to correct the stilts multiple times.
For the good stuff - the staff was kind, helpful, understanding and apologetic. The hotel and rooms have a modern feel and comfortable. The breakfast layout is nice with many options, both hot and cold. Location is so-so but met my needs due to business meetings within walking distance.
If I had an option I probably would not stay there again. I did mention all the downsides during check-out so that they can improve and offered me the manager's name to contact directly if I do come back.
I really liked the hotel, the staff was friendly and mostly motivated. But there were a few points of improvement like the breakfast service and the thin walls in between rooms.
But the design of the hotel is really nice!
