How to Get There
This hotel was just what I wanted. Desk clerk helped me check in early after an overnight flight, he and later 2 others marked the city map on the desk to show how to walk to the library I was visiting and where to find a nearby taxi. We were close to the Grand Place--a very walkable area. The breakfast room had a broad array of food and a great view of the city. My room was very comfortable. Coffee maker would have been nice, but that's always just a perk. I was really very pleased and would go back there on another visit.
The Floris is a 3 star hotel, but with a great location. No coffee/tea facilities in the rooms. Check the room you are allocated as the first we were shown was totally inadequate. Second room fine if basic with very compact bathroom and loo. Breakfast at the top of the hotel has great views and an adequate continental breakfast. It's ok as the location is ideal for restaurants and the Centre.
We decided to stay here for 3 nights due to its location and proximity to Brussels Central Train Station. Upon entering the hotel, we knew the hotel was undergoing renovations. We were the only ones checking-in mid-afternoon. It was not busy at all. The front desk person was on the phone and after taking that call, he then spoke to a housekeeping staff, as if we did not exist in front of him.
Throughout the day, you can hear drilling and some pounding going on. It may be difficult to get some rest if you intend to sleep late morning or early afternoon. At night, it was quiet. Two small elevators are available to use which are considered small but expected for European standards. The room we stayed in was a double room on the 4th floor. The view was not spectacular from our bedroom window. It was facing an apartment building. The room did not have a refrigerator. The air-conditioning worked fine. No smell of cigarette smoke.
The room was supposed to be "renovated" or "refurbished" but upon further inspection, the room seemed like it was rushed. These are some of the blemishes that were observed: pencil markings, torn section of wallpaper just above the TV, and worst of all, a clogged shower drain! We reported the clogged drain to the evening supervisor which he tried to fix using a step plunger. It did not work. He stated that the maintenance person will be available the next day between 8 and 9 am. The following day, we approached the front dest to report the clogged shower drain a little after 8 am so that we can get a proper shower before heading out. Sadly, the maintenance person has not arrived yet. We were given a room key to use the shower at another room (someone just checked out). We were glad that the shower drain was fixed when we arrived back in the afternoon. Housekeeping failed to replenish facial tissues for 2 consecutive days.
Breakfast was located on the 7th floor and it was adequate. The breakfast room had a fantastic view of the fabulous Stadhuis. The breakfast staff was attentive and friendly. Items were immediately replenished.
Check-out was a breeze as the front desk person was too busy talking on the phone. Upon handing the room keys in, he just signaled with his hand to signal we are free to go.
Overall, the pros of this hotel are:
Cons of this hotel are:
- Most staff do not go above and beyond their job duties/responsibilities
- Lack of customer service
- Currently under renovation
- Lack of charm/character
