How to Get There
When you arrive the hotel looks good but they have spent all their money on making the reception area look good. From the second you open the lift you know you have been misled. Dated and dirty barely describes the corridors and the rooms are straight out of the 70's. On day 1the toilet stopped working properly, on day 2 it was the tv throughout the hotel and that took 24 hours to fix.
Don't bother calling reception, they don't answer. When you go down they take forever to come out and are no help at all as well as being brusque and rude. In a nutshell this place is run for the convenience of the staff who have no concept of customer service.
Location is the only saving grace.
I agonised over various hotels on several websites but settled on this one. We were not disappointed as we found it comfortable, close to all the attractions of the Lower Town but in a quiet side-street. Breakfast was excellent and the view from the dining room over the rooftops is areal bonus. Ideal if you're looking for a mid-priced stay.
The hotel is at a fantastic location with a nice lobby, friendly staff and a wonderful view from the breakfast room. Rooms are convenient. However, the state of the maintenance is sloppy with some mold on the window frames in the breakfast room and between tiles in the bathroom, loose door handles, stained carpets.
Nevertheless good value for money if you can accept the negative aspects
I picked this hotel because of its price and location. Less than 5 minutes from the Grand Palace and Brussels Central Train Station. I did come into Brussels Midi and it was a 25 minute walk but easy to find. The price with breakfast on a flexible rate was not too expensive in comparison to other hotels in the vinicity plus booking direct the hotel had a 10% discount.
The only criticism I have about price was that my stay was totaled in Euros and I was expecting to pay in Euros. Only to come for check in and they've totaled it, using the card machine, in Great British Pounds. It would have been nice to have been asked what I would like to pay in because 1) it's just courteous. 2) my card doesn't charge for foreign transactions. 3) the MasterCard rate was £8 cheaper than their card machine rate. So I felt a little ticked off that I wasn't asked.
The lobby area is clean and modern. Check in was very simple. You receive your door key card and WiFi code. I was on the 4th floor near the stairs and lift. Room 407, a single room. The lifts are small, they can only hold 4 people and with luggage that's about 2 people. Being near the lifts and stairs wasn't that noisy but I think having the stairs in between the lifts and the wall helped with that.
My room was of a fairly decent size for being a single. It wasn't cramped like some singles are. There is a bed, a desk area a wardrobe, suitcase stand, bedside table, a 26" TV with a few English speaking channels. BBC 1 and 2 are fairly standard channels to receive in Belgium hotels (during this trip I stayed at 2 more hotels in Gent and Bruges) so I could watch some programmes I have interest in, Match of the Day especially. The bed was a little uncomfortable but I still managed to sleep. Having only one pillow and it's not your typical pillow shape but square is not good either. The bed cushions had to be used as pillows to give me a level of comfort. There isn't a safe in the room but I did use a Pacsafe Travel Safe 3 litres, which wasn't actually bothered by anyone, and this was due to some reviews stating they had things stolen. There is a safe with reception if you wish to use that.
The bathroom is well equipped. You get 3 towels, hand soap, shower/hair gel in the bath. And it was clean. Another criticism is that you can hear the backflow in the baths drain when using the sink in the morning. And the walls are very thin so you can hear toilets flushing and people talking in the corridor.
Breakfast is served on the 7th floor. Be prepared on a Saturday that you may have to take the stairs, as I did because the lift was full. The views to the Grand Palace was excellent and in fact a view over the city was excellent. The breakfast selection has a mix for everyone. Cereal, bread which can be toasted, cold meat and cheese, warm bacon and scrambled eggs, boiled egg. Cold juice, warm typical breakfast drinks. It was a nice variety with a good selection of condiments.
Overall I would recommend this hotel. I had a lovely stay and was value for money.
Ok, the location is very good. And the lobby indeed spacious and modern. The breakfast is served in the upper floor with nice view to and the breakfast itself is good enough for a 3 star hotel. What I didn't like was the room. Very small and with the minimun amenities. Also a little bit cold. There was a bad smell in the corridors. The personel were very kind and very helpful.
