15th-century convent turned romantic boutique hotel overlooking the postcard-perfect Den Dyver canal in central Bruges
Staying at Bruges’ historic, utterly romantic Hotel de Orangerie is less like sleeping in a hotel than time traveling to the well-turned-out home of a Belgian aristocrat from centuries ago. The 20-room hotel is a cozy cocoon of intoxicating scents, warm colors, opulent fabrics, antiques, fragrant bouquet, and crackling fireplaces. Service is warm and personal, and again more residential than hotel-like. There’s no proper restaurant for dinner (though some of Bruges’ top restaurants are nearby), gym or spa. But breakfast comes with a très romantic glass of champagne and is served on a pretty terrace or in a glass-walled dining room overlooking the canal, and afternoon tea or evening aperitifs are served in a fireplace-warmed living room. In summer, the Orangerie Beach Club sets up guests in the nearby coastal resort of Knokke, with wooden cabanas and umbrellas, snacks and drinks from the beach bar, and picnic lunches from the hotel.
In the Area
One of Belgium’s if not Europe’s most beautiful cities, the medieval city of Bruges positively drips with magic and romance. The well-preserved city center of this “Venice of the North,” as it is known, has earned a UNESCO designation. Historium Bruges allows guests to visit a re-creation of medieval times—and now sells tickets that include a tasting of Belgian beers. Bruges Ballooning offers aerial tours over the city in its modern-day incarnation. Further afield, the steamship Lamme Goedzak takes guests on a half-hour cruise to the charming village of Damme.
