Stately Greek Revival-style grande dame with an award-winning spa set in the scenic Cumberland Valley
This historic 220-room retreat in the Allegheny Mountains has been a hotspot since 1806, when the original hotel was built as a restorative destination for city folk wanting to “take the waters.” A major renovation several years ago brought the grande dame up to date, with state-of-the-art technology and refreshed interiors. Guests can choose from classic (though recently restored) rooms in the historic wing or more contemporary digs in the spa wing. Dine in posh surrounds at the 1796 Room and Crystal Room, or keep things more casual over craft brews in the Frontier Tavern.
In the Area
While there are plenty of diversions on-property, the surrounding mountains offer opportunities for outdoor pursuits like horseback riding with Green Ridge Ranch, located an hour's drive from the resort. Omni can arrange kayaks and a guide to explore nearby Shawnee Lake; on the way home, sample some local wines from Briar Valley Winery, on Bedford’s main street, which specializes in European varietals like Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Franc, and Lemberger.
