Charming eight-room inn an hour north of NYC, with fine dining, a yoga loft and an A-list owner, Richard Gere
Since it opened in the summer of 2009, the Bedford Post Inn has been hopping. That might be because Richard Gere and hotelier Russell Hernandez are the innkeepers of the eight-room B&B, or maybe it's the buzzworthy Campagna restaurant, which has become a posh clubhouse for the A-list locals since Chef Michael White and the Altamarea Group joined the team. But for out-of-towners, it’s the fact that Bedford Post Inn makes for a quick escape — about an hour's drive — from the bustle of Manhattan. The calming country vibe is matched by the requisite urban/rustic details, like memorable farm-fresh cuisine and subtle, top-notch design.
Bed and Bath
The rooms themselves are done in muted shades of gray, off-white and light blue, grounded with reclaimed wood flooring and appointed with vintage Audubon prints and objects from local antique shops. They feel like a stylish friend’s beautifully decorated country home. Bathrooms are done up in marble and shades of gray and blue, with hand made claw foot tubs (in most) and specially commissioned botanic toiletries by Sponge.
The heart of the property is Campagna restaurant, where local socialites and visiting out-of-towners sip cocktails before dinner. The restaurant opens at 5:30 p.m. and continues buzzing all night long. Chef PJ Calapa and his team use local ingredients to create an eclectic menu of Italian style cuisine. In the morning, after a stroll through the grounds and a stop at the reflecting pool, an hourlong yoga class is the perfect way to start the day. Afterward, pop into the laid-back Barn cafe, where the homemade granola and organic muffins can easily be packed to go, perhaps to the buttery leather armchair in your room or a pillowy lounger near the outdoor fireplace.
In the Area
Immerse yourself in nature at the 4,000 acres of the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation for walking, hiking and fly fishing excursions, then treat yourself to a wide assortment of cheeses and pâtés, and made-to-order sandwiches at the Bedford Gourmet. For a dose of culture, the Katonah Museum of Art, one of the most celebrated small museums in the country, hosts several major exhibitions each year.
