Overview

Beautifully preserved 16th-century inn with period details and a courtyard bar in Strasbourg's historic heart

The Lowdown

In a beautiful half-timbered building dating from the 16th century, the Cour du Corbeau (Crow’s Courtyard) is one of France’s best–loved hotels. The 57 guestrooms blend period details (solid oak flooring, wood beams) with modern must-haves (air conditioning, WiFi). All feature Louis XV–style furniture, and some look out onto the courtyard or the garden. The contemporary bathrooms come with twin vanities, stone floors and either a tub or a shower. The building’s heritage status limits what can be done with the space, so there’s no gym or spa, or even a restaurant, but the petite bar has an alfresco terrace on the secluded cobblestone courtyard. And there are plenty of restaurants, bistros and cafés within strolling distance.

In the Area

Strasbourg’s Cathédrale de Notre-Dame is a Gothic masterpiece with stained glass, an astronomical clock and a viewing platform that offers vistas of the city (after a 332-step climb). The city is easy to explore by bike, and there’s an extensive cycle network and tons of parking options. Rent a bike from Velhop, a nonprofit company with several outlets. The city’s Grande Ile (Big Island; home to the cathedral) is full of eye-catching half-timbered buildings and places to eat and drink, including Maison Kammerzell, a traditional restaurant in a house that dates from 1427.

Superb historic hotel

We had a very enjoyable three night stay at the Cour du Corbeau hotel in August. We chose this hotel for our trip to Strasbourg because it looked such an impressive 16th century historic building. The hotel includes an interesting small photographic exhibition of the major two year long renovation of the timber buildings, which restored it from what looked a near derelict state to its current beautiful and luxurious condition, while retaining all the atmosphere of the former inn.
Our ground floor room was spacious, with lots of character and interest, stylish furnishings, and very comfortable. The air conditioning was quiet and effective. The bathroom was large, and nicely finished with good quality fixtures. There was ample storage space. We also had a small private terrace outside, with seating, in a courtyard space. This was a pleasure to use in the hot weather.
The location of the hotel was perfect, and we were in walking distance of the major heritage sights in the beautiful old historic area of Strasbourg.
The staff service at the hotel was excellent, contributing to a delightful stay.

Our family of three only had one night in Strasbourg but I couldn't imagine a more perfect place to stay than this hotel. We had a suite so there was a separate bedroom and small living area with a fold-out couch that our teen said was sufficiently comfortable. Truly excellent communication from the staff, including quick responses to some questions we had about off-site parking prior to arrival, the building and room had so much character (in a very nice way, not at all run down), extremely easy walking distance to several restaurants and the "Petite France" area, functional air conditioning, and a fair price. I hope to return someday!
