A small hotel with big design cred and a fantastic city center location close to Plaza Catalunya
A block from Plaza Catalunya in downtown Barcelona, Room Mate Pau is within strolling distance of the street artists and flower stalls of Las Ramblas, the chic cocktail bars of La Barceloneta and the upscale boutiques on the Paseo de Gracia. Designed by lauded local architect and interior designer Teresa Sapey, the 66 guestrooms are clean and modern, dominated by white with playful splashes of color and chic dark wood bathrooms. The upper-floor suites also feature terraces complete with Jacuzzis and views of La Sagrada Familia. Breakfast is served every day until noon, either in the colorful dining room or on a terrace dotted with sculptures.
In the Area
For an art fix, visit La Pedrera, one of Gaudí’s most avant-garde creations, with its decorative rooftop terraces and great views of the city, and the Museu Picasso, to see a variety of works by the Spanish master, including early sketches as well as more famous pieces. For incredible food head to Montiel Espai Gastronomic, a romantic stone-clad restaurant in the alleyways of the Born and one of Barcelona’s best-kept secrets. To see the city from above, take the cable car to Montjuic, the big hill that looms over Barcelona, to check out the national art gallery and the Olympic stadium. At night, start with drinks at Ginger, a voguish wine and cocktail bar with a film noir vibe, before bar-hopping to La Vinya del Senyor, where you can work your way through the extensive list of Spanish and Catalan wines until the wee hours.
