Modern convention center on the beach with a rooftop pool and splurge-worthy spa
Completed in 2006, this modern 241-room hotel is just one block from the beach and was designed to maximize the dazzling Mediterranean light. Built of concrete, natural woods and glass, it allows the sunshine to dance through the lobby and ground-floor dining rooms, to dazzling effect. Outside is a vast courtyard surrounded by multilayered terraces for dining and lounging beneath shady pagodas; at its heart there's a milky-blue geometric pool watched by a statue of an owl loved by little ones. Although the property was originally conceived as a convention destination, it’s little wonder half the guests now come for pure leisure.
Bed and Bath
By Barcelona standards the guestrooms are seriously spacious, all with city or sea views. They're uniformly decorated in natural wood and soft wine hues, but guests can choose among King, Queen or Twin beds and there's a pillow menu, as well as such welcome extras as a kettle for making tea and coffee, a Nespresso machine, a large writing desk and an ironing board and iron tucked away in the closet. All bathrooms have a Jacuzzi tub and a walk-in shower and are generously stocked with trendy C.O. Bigelow toiletries. The best rooms have balconies with views of the pool and out to sea.
Pullman’s "work hard, play hard" philosophy comes through in the way the hotel approaches guests’ downtime. The Blend lounge and bar offers a lip-smacking tapas menu of Barcelona specialties as well as main courses with Asian influences, and the in-house mixologist has created an inventive cocktail menu to go with it. In the state-of-the-art basement convention area, there’s a small gym and spa (we love the 75-minute Stop Jet Lag hot oil massage) and a secret rooftop swimming pool (adults only, heated year-round) and a bar that serves light snacks and drinks through the summer. A handful of bicycles are available free of charge to guests for zipping about town.
In the Area
The city’s best beaches and the old fishing quarter are right in front of the hotel. La Barceloneta, a 10-minute walk away, is a top spot for catching some rays and enjoying pristine seafood. The neighborhood is lovely for strolling with no particular plan in mind. Stop by Chito’s Bar for a cold Galician beer and some seafood tapas, contemporary beach café Barraca for a long, lazy lunch and the best paella in town, and Vioko for rose-flavored ice cream. At night the chiringuitos (beach bars) sway to a funky beat, and there's barefoot dancing in the sand.
