A 1908 private mansion turned hotel with a jazz club and rooftop pool on Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia
Constructed in 1908 by famed architect Lluís Domenech i Montaner, the five-story Casa Fuster was once the most extravagant private mansion on one of Barcelona’s most sought-after streets, Passeig de Gràcia. The property underwent a head-to-toe renovation in 2004 and re-opened as a 105-room hotel, with interiors that create a youthful, hedonistic vibe. Guestrooms have olive and violet touches, dark wood accents and 30-inch flat-screen TVs; some have private balconies and whirlpool tubs. The first-floor Galaxó Restaurant serves seasonal Mediterranean cuisine while Café Vienés offers tea and a variety of cocktails (hang here on Thursday nights to listen to live jazz from 9 to 11 p.m.). But perhaps the hotel’s best asset is its rooftop terrace with a small pool and splendid city views.
In the Area
Head to Antoni Gaudí’s whimsical Parc Güell to admire his beautiful mosaic creations and hike to the top for sweeping views of Barcelona and, on a clear day, the Mediterranean. When hunger strikes, visit L’Arros Arrosseria, which serves up 36 delicious variations of Spain’s signature dish, paella. Next, stroll along La Rambla, one of Barcelona’s most iconic streets, and stop at the Boqueria Market to sample fresh fruit, vegetables, seafood and meat, or belly up to one of the few tapas bars. And for a dose of culture, the artwork housed in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya is just as magnificent as the museum’s regal exterior, with Romanesque, Renaissance and Gothic collections of paintings, drawings and sculptures. The museum is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
