How to Get There
First impressions of the hotel were challenging. It sits atop the chaos of steamy Ubud. Whilst the drive up is stunning we were a little surprised by how unassuming the hotel frontage is. Until you enter.
Then it becomes apparent that this isn’t a typical hotel. The grounds are a beautifully maintained tropical paradise. Quite magical. The rooms are enchanting in their Balinese style, that don’t possess all the latest amenities but make up for this in location, space, character and oozing local culture.
The staff are wonderfully eager to ensure your stay is tranquil and serene but in some aspects not able to address some simple quirks/ requirements Such as being unable to exchange the bouncy and bulky fibre pillows for feathered varieties. However this mornings blissful yoga session in a jungle environment with the trickle of a waterfall burbling in the background was idyllic. The pools (whilst less warm than by the coast) are lovely for cooling wouldn’t appeal to the more active swimmer.
However.... The shining light is the restaurant. Every meal has been prepared by in my opinion one of the best kitchens in Bali. Superb regional cuisine served by Lasmini and the team. Who represent all that is beautiful about Bali. Tranquil. Calm. Serene and attentive beyond measure. The service is exemplary - And with the rainforest as a backdrop and the sound of frogs and bird call it makes it a very special place as it is open to the air. With the breeze filled with heady frangipani scent it’s very beautiful. Downside - Wine is extremely expensive. Local wine that had been £25 a bottle at our previous 5 * resort at Nusa Dua is £35 here. So it’s beer or water! Breakfast is delightful in being a la carte and is stunning for choice, service, quality of ingredients and of course taste.
To summarise. Don’t be put off by first impressions. But I would suggest that the hotel do something to improve this. However it’s an individualistic quirky and tranquil retreat for those who enjoy excellent food and service and revel in the unusual.
I've stayed in many types of accommodation around the world, and still consider Wapa Di Ume as one of my favourites. The hospitality and warmth of the staff is amazing and the location is fantastic. On my most recent visit I stayed at their new hotel Sideman which is just as good. I highly recommend their hotels for anyone looking for somewhere special to stay in Ubud.

It was a perfect setting for our anniversary, over looking rice fields, rice cycle was completed when we were there end of October though. We rented a large beautiful villa in my favorite part of the hotel where I last stayed in 2004. The villa is in a perfect location, relaxing pool close by. And it’s only a short complimentary van ride in to the main area of Ubud and the Monkey Forest, shopping, temples, and Balinese dance shows. We loved everything about this property, but what really made our stay was the kind, gracious and attentive staff! Nothing was too much trouble to try and arrange by reception, the cleaning staff did an amazing job everyday of making the place look so clean and tidy. The Bali coffee and breakfast choices was the best, so yummy, We had something different every morning. I can HIGHLY recommend this property to anyone. You will be made to feel like part of their family. We had such a good time, we are now arranging our visit to their new property in Sideman Bali for 3 night this week, so excited to get there. Best place to stay in Bali ever, feels like Bali-home.
