How to Get There
The resort is built along the spine of a steep-sided, north-south running ridge, with a river running along the eastern side. It is about a 20 minute walk from Ubud town centre - far enough to feel you are away from town, but close enough to feel involved (if you want to). If you don't feel like walking, they run a regular shuttle to the town centre. Our room had a private plunge pool, which was excellent for cooling down at the end of the day. There are also two big pools - one at the top of the resort by the main restaurant, and the other at the bottom of the resort overlooking the river, near the spa.
The buffet breakfasts were excellent, with a mix of local traditional dishes, Indian, Chinese and Western food. The variety of choice on the dinner menu was perhaps a little more limited than one might expect from this sort of hotel.
One activity they offer that we tried was a personal cooking lesson from one of the chefs, taking place in the midst of the herb garden. We learned four or five traditional Balinese dishes, which we prepared, and then ate for (a huge) lunch. We have repeated most of the dishes at least once since returning home. The hotel is often visited by a troop of monkeys. All in all a great base for exploring Ubud.
This hotel was one of the best I have stayed at. The rooms were clean and spacious with a balcony and a view overlooking the gardens which were immaculate.
The people were really nice and welcoming and couldnt do enough for you.
The breakfast was really good with lots of choices. The restaurants were quite expensive to eat at, but there was a free shuttle bus which takes you to the town and back which was really good. There were lots of restaurants in the town which were good and not as expensive.
We had a facial and a petal bath which I would recommend.
The only draw back was the sunbeds, there wasn't enough beds set out in the sun, half of them were in the shade all day and it felt quite cold. It would be good if there was another part of the hotel with more beds in the sun as most people like to sit in the sun.
The pools were amazing but the water quite cold.
I would definately return to this hotel.
Maya Ubud is a wonderful resort to base yourself at if you want to relax in a beautiful setting, surrounded by magnificent gardens and bush and have still have numerous choices of activities within the resort and close by. The garden villa I stayed in for the week was beautifully presented and kept clean and well stocked. The morning yoga, cooking class and 3 hour village trek were all great ways to experience Bali. There was a great selection of food in the different restaurants and reasonable prices. The staff were all very professional and spoke great English. The only thing I would suggest if you are staying here is get your massages etc in Ubud. While the Spa is beautifully appointed, the prices are pretty steep and I found numerous alternatives in Ubud.
