How to Get There
Travelled from Ubud from one night particularly to give our bird watcher the chance to see the Bali Myna (Starling - their native bird). The Menjangan however was a wonderful bonus to the trip. Personally welcomed by the Manager and staff (with a drink and very nice snack) who outlined its history, and goals, and who were keen to ensure our wishes for being there were met. Upgraded to one of the beach villa's - gorgeous in every way. Food was lovely and 'Happy Hour' drinks creative and reasonable, and you can either have these overlooking the stunning views from the tower or by the water. The mossies are plentiful, however there is lots of spray available. And we did see the Myna - 3 times! Would have liked more time to swim especially.
This place is like a dream. I would highly recommend staying here if you have any interest in the wildlife or ecology of the island, or just if you feel like getting away from it all.
I spent 4 nights here with my partner and we were upgraded on arrival to a beach hut which was absolutely amazing! I would highly recommend spending a bit extra on the beach hut because every morning we awoke to a heard of deer outside our hut, and got to watch monkeys playing on the beach, sometimes just meters away.
The room is finished to an extremely high standard and the resort is really generous with its complementary toiletries and refreshments. The bed is enormous and incredibly comfortable, and the bathroom is open air, with a huge bath and great shower.
Although the beach itself isn’t suitable for swimming but there is a jetty just a minutes walk away that allows you to swim and snorkel as much as you’d like.
The little restaurant tucked in amongst the mangroves serves a stunning breakfast that caters to all tastes, and a varied and delicious menu in the afternoons and evenings. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options too!
There are loads of activities run by the resort and I highly recommend snorkelling at menjangan island. Although we didn’t use the spa it looked incredible, and a visit to the top of the Bali tower is a breathtaking experience.
Aside from the activities, you are so far away from everything that it creates the perfect opportunity to sit back, listen to the jungle and relax.
I would also like to extend my thanks to the staff who were all so friendly and genuine making us feel so welcome and we really hope to return one day.
We stayed at The Residence as a family of 6 and had a mixed stay
The rooms - The Residence is beautiful with large rooms and it’s own pool. Whilst it’s away from any restaurants the little busses made it easy to get around
The location - it really is super quiet, the kids loved playing by themselves on the beach and the jetty easy to snorkel from. The wildlife was lovely too.
The breakfasts - great selection of beautiful food was served every morning either at the 2 restaurants or in our villa
The not so good
The bikes - whilst it is advertised that you can cycle around, good luck finding a bike that is in good enough repair to take you! From skipping chains to flat tyres they are in such bad repair that unless you really feel like a challenge it’s not too much fun.
The need to be organised - because we were staying in the Residence we needed to decide each evening where we were eating breakfast, sometimes what we wanted to eat and what time ... doesn’t sound too bad but it kind of made us on a schedule which wasn’t relaxing and invariably we ended up with food we didn’t really want and wasted it.
This was also the same for getting drinks - one even as we left sunset drinks we asked to take beers back to be told they would arrange it with the Butler only to get the beers over an hour later!
The constant push for extra activities- every person we saw was a sales pitch for another activity when we were here to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings- the ‘horse grooming and feeding’ was just to get you to the stables to book riding and when we said we didn’t want to we were then pretty much ignored and when we asked if we could feed them were told it wasn’t feeding time.
The BBQ dinner - just don’t bother! We asked for this on our last night and after it rained during the day was told we could only have it at The Residence as the advertised Gazebos were full so we said no to it to be told you have to otherwise you will be charged anyway .... so we arrived at the time we were told to find a table but no chairs so we waited for set up ... lit our own candles and for AUD $700 for 6 of us we sat 50m from the restaurant in the dark.... we all would have preferred the restaurant without the shocking bill!
So, it is a lovely place but with so many other options what you paid wasn’t worth what you got and that means we will try somewhere else next time which is sad because we were looking for a place in NW Bali for regular visits.
I had the pleasure of visiting Menjangan Island to go SCUBA Diving and it was well worth the trip! Jenny and Komang were amazing. We dove 3 wall dives and had lunch. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and super funny. I can’t say enough good things about their professionalism and great customer service. If you are ever in Bali and want to Dive go here first!! You won’t be disappointed,,
