Crammed full of galleries, boutiques and restaurants, Seminyak, on Bali’s west coast, has a couture beach scene that attracts glamorous globetrotters who come to eat, party and lounge. In the middle of it all, Kanishka’s 25-villa Zen retreat offers a secluded sanctuary where cool private plunge pools quench sun-kissed skin behind walls tall enough to keep the neighbors out of sight. White stone carvings inspired by Angkor Wat lead to fortress-like dark wood doors behind which traditional Balinese decor melds with modern accents conceived by designer Yani Hadisuwarno. It may seem strange that there are no common areas, but once cocooned in a spacious villa on a sun-drenched private deck, you won’t want to encounter any other guests.
Bed and Bath
The villas have private plunge pools (or Jacuzzis) with wooden decks and oversize wicker loungers. Expansive indoor-outdoor marble-floored living rooms and kitchens give way to air-conditioned bedrooms where billowing canopy beds outfitted in soft white and earth-toned linens form the centerpiece. There are almost too many mood lighting options: Buddha lamps mount dark wood surfaces, and track lights highlight Persian rugs and Balinese drawings. The bathrooms are tiled floor to ceiling with steel-gray Balinese river stone and feature deep Jacuzzi tubs. There’s also a light-filled bamboo garden.
Kanishka is the type of place where everything comes to you. The magic words for getting what you want, whether it be a private yoga session or the nearly five-hour royal spa indulgence package, are “just press zero.” Standard American and Indonesian fare (pizza, fried rice) make up the room service menu. The crown jewel is the poolside barbecue, where an impressive selection of grilled meats is served with a slew of side dishes and finished off with chocolate mousse cake.
In the Area
If you’ve exhausted the hotel’s on-site treatments, the Maharaja-size Prana Spa is just up the road, offering ayurvedic therapy and other indulgences at one of the largest spas in Bali. In the immediate area there’s a plethora of boutiques and galleries in addition to a pick of dining options including the international eatery Made’s Warung, as well as Taco Beach Grill, which serves hand-pressed tortillas. Meanwhile, the free shuttle will carry your appetite to legendary Italian establishment La Lucciola, at one of Seminyak’s finest stretches of sand: Petitenget Beach. Kanishka is only a 15-minute drive from the international airport, making for an easy departure — should you ever decide to leave.
How to Get There
We have been coming here for 10 years, staff are like family. Great destination, looking forward to visit 11 in 2020, it’s home way from home for a very relaxing holiday. Private pool villa is excellent. ????????
Rooms need to be renovated, they are looking very tired. We complained on arrival as the main area we would be living in had no air-conditioning and to their credit they upgraded us. The food included in our package was pretty awful, however the kitchen and dining area was huge and well appointed although you had to walk around the pool to get to the bedroom. The second bedroom was locked so I do not know what the upstairs area was like.
There is an outdoor bathroom which is completely private and a lovely space, the breakfasts were good and whilst the bed was firm it was not uncomfortable. The staff do everything they can to make sure you are comfortable. In our package we had a massage thrown in and the two ladies who came to our room were professional and polite. The massage was also very good.
location wise, it may not be the best part of Seminyak, however everything we wanted to do was no longer than a 20 minute walk away. However there are great restaurants at your door step and all the shopping you could want. We didn't use the pool (although it looked inviting) as it rained every day (dang) so I would check the best time to go to Bali before booking.
We were in room 11 and I would be requesting the same room again as it was quiet and serene, far enough away from the main st to not hear any noise and it was very safe.
Second time here in three years. First time I’ve returned to the same villa. Staff are the same and still amazing! I have not experienced better service in a villa anywhere. It truely is like a mini hotel.
The villa itself is better than I remember it and extremely well maintained. Also just had new bathrooms done.
You won’t find a better villa on the coast at this price or level of service. Highly recommended
