How to Get There
I will never recommend this hotel, too noisy, too crowded and the quality of service is very low. The food is correct but not for a 5 stars hotel. You have to pay to access the spa. Impossible to eat in a thematic restaurant unless you book them very early in the morning.
I had dinner at this hotel. I can only mention the great service and the professionalism of the staff there. Especially Sir Fran Garcia who made our experience incredibly good thanks tor his care for the clients. I highly recommend.
The bait and switch scam -
Before I booked this trip I contacted the hotel and was told that the resort was open until 10/31, so I booked my stay accordingly. The day before I left I received an email stating the hotel was closing on 10/29, and I would be moved to the sister resort for the last 2 days of my stay. I followed up with 4 emails requesting additional info that they ignored. I requested some info about the room I would get and such, and never got any info until I insisted I speak with a manager. I asked 2 staff members at the hotel and also couldn’t get a response. I had a master suite, which was not an option at the sister resort, yet I was charged the higher rate for all 7 nights of my stay. By 10/26, I still had no answers. On 10/27, I sent an email to hotel management and still no response! I was finally told by staff that I would not be given any details until 10/29! On 10/28, the manager met with us and offered a $110 euro a night refund. I asked for spa passes as well and he agreed to this.
The food -
The buffets overall were good. The buffet on the White Island side was better as the other one had a que and fewer options it seemed. Children should be required to be supervised so they didn’t use their hands to help themselves. Staff seemed upset by this, but never said anything to the crappy parents. Having to book a reservation for the speciality restaurants at 8am each morning was ridiculous. At 8am, there was already a line. La Dona was not Mexican food and did not match their online description. There were not staples such as chips and salsa, rice or refried beans. It’s although they had never actually been to a Mexican restaurant, or even a Taco Bell. Il Palazzo just wasn’t good at all. The Sports Bar was the only 24 hour spot for snacks and drinks. They did not do a very good job keeping flies off the food or keeping food stocked in the buffet area. They also refused to serve anything other than beer and wine after 1am without charging for absolutely no reason! They closed Portofino on 10/28, even though that side of the resort was allegedly to stay open until 11/3.
While not all booze is included, there is a wide variety of brands and type that are. There are bar menus that are the same everywhere that were very useful. The margaritas are terrible, try the capricoska instead, or tell them what you want. I had them make me a drink with Stoli, limon soda and grenadine or lime syrup. They did a great job hiding the alcohol taste. After 1am they will only serve beer and wine for no apparent reason. Anything else you get charged for even though it’s included!! Expect to find kids at all the bars, especially the lobby bar at the Palace. This is where they hold the kid’s activists. The kids are the only ones that have activities at this place! It’s awkward and annoying.
There were no activities or parties onsite. The pools closed early, as did the pool bars. There were signs stating no pool floats and no saving seats, but tacky people did as they pleased. People would sit at the pool all day long, which made no sense since there were seats on the beach. I had no problem getting a seat out there. Security made sure only hotel guests utilized them.
The room -
The master suite was nice. I enjoyed the ocean view from the 2 balconies. Room walls are thin and I frequently heard the child next door running back and forth. The mini bars were often restocked by housekeeping, but the last 2 days in the White Island side they weren’t. I called reception twice to ask for more drinks and received some of what I requested. They only had water, soda and beer to put in there. Would have been nice to have other alcohol like in other all inclusives do. The do not disturb sign only worked sometimes. One the maid decided to ignore it as I took a siesta.
For the change in rooms we were told we would get assistance with the luggage as there are no elevators, but this never happened. Management also told us we would change to an ocean view master suite, but got a pool view junior suite. There was no documentation of us being offered a partial refund and spa passes, so we had to waste more time arguing for what we were promised after trekking up and down stairs to get to the lobby at the other resort. Staff was unapologetic for the unwarranted inconveniences. To top it off, no one was available to help us into our next room. After finally giving us our refund in cash (after refusing to put it back in the card), they frantically called the room as soon as we got into it to demand the cash back as they needed to put it in the card. This place makes no sense at all!!! All of a sudden staff was available to run to the room to ask for the “money we owed”. I didn’t feel comfortable just handing over the money, and insisted on doing it in person so I could get a receipt for the money going back on the card. While waiting to get the refund on my card, we met another woman who had been moved over from the other side as well. She also had a master suite and was told she would get a junior suite, but found out no room had been saved for her after all!
The bed in the junior suite was super uncomfortable. The balcony overlooked the pool and only had regular chairs, not reclining ones.
It would have been enjoyable without the forced move to the other hotel. It was stressful to try and get answers only to be ignored at every avenue. There were no activities as advertised. Do not expect any special treatment for any reason at all, and do not expect honestly from this company! With the master suite, you get free transportation to and from the airport. It took a while via email to confirm someone would pick us up. A couple days before I left I spoke with guest services to secure a ride back to the airport. I was told a note was made in the system, but given all the problems I had, I double checked the day before. Of course, there was no documentation of our transfer. They did accommodate us and scheduled a ride on their shuttle. They try their best to pass you off to a private service, but if it’s included in your room insist they provide it to you.
I would not recommend traveling to any of their resorts given how shady they have been. Everyone else that got moved had the same complaints.
