Very nice stay all in all, only bad restaurant service
Reviewed 5 months ago

Hotel rooms, staff and service was excellent.
Food from heaven and unfortunately restaurant service was really bad. None of the table reservations worked out although done way upfront, wrong menu folders brought, no wine offered, wrong dishes brought, upon complains unfriendly staff. It seems the hotels and restaurant do not talk to each other. I as a guest want to go to the reception and you make things happen without forwarding me to anybody else. That is 5 stars.
Therefore 5 stars are not earned.

Top 5* Hotel

Everything you expect from a top 5* Hotel. Extremely friendly staff, very professional. The rooms are well equipped and always perfectly made and clean.
Pool and wellness area are great as well. The location itself is perfect to start hiking into the Black Forrest. Especially if there is snow.

Exactly what we were looking for

We stayed at Parkhotel Adler for 3 nights as part of a 2 week trip in Germany and France and had an absolutely lovely time. The hotel is comfortable, the food is excellent, the wellness centre is fabulous and the service was charming. We travelled with our 3 small dogs and were highly satisfied with the hotel's approach to guests travelling with dogs - everything clear and helpful.

Some specifics -

The hotel is located on the edge of the small town of Hinterzarten. It's a really great location. You're well-positioned for walks/hikes into the woods and mountains around the town and really feel that you're immersed in nature, despite having the convenience of the small town at your back. Hinterzarten itself is a great spot from which to explore the wider Black Forest area. You are only a few minutes away from one of the main roads which crosses through the southern section of the Black Forest. It's a busy but convenient road which gets you to Freiburg in 30 minutes (one of Europe's great smaller cities). You can turn off this road at multiple points though and immediately find yourself on quiet country lanes criss-crossing the area with an unending sequence of gorgeous views.

We stayed in a 'Classic Junior Suite' which is a very large space combining a bedroom, a sitting room, a good-sized bathroom and a sizeable closet/dressing room area. The room was very comfortable and well-appointed. We were both particularly happy with the quality of the bed and the excellence of the lovely walk-in shower. Over the years I've stayed at plenty of 'wow-factor' hotels where you can't get a decent night's sleep, or find yourself struggling to operate the latest funky shower design. Parkhotel Adler is less about 'wow' and more about 'function' which is what we like when staying at hotels. The decor is a bit dated --- feels very 80's/90's - but everything is well maintained and works properly. We had a top-floor room and the views were gorgeous! One point to note when booking - the Belle Epoque house (which is where most rooms are) is, I think, made up of 2 original buildings which are on different levels. That means that on each floor, some rooms are up a flight of stairs from the elevator. If you have mobility issues, it's best to ask the hotel to give you a room which is on the same level as the elevator.

Two of the hotel's restaurants allowed us to bring in the dogs and we took full advantage. We had 2 lovely dinners in the Adler Stuben (part of the restaurant is dog-friendly), and a wonderful afternoon tea at Cafe Diva. The standout dishes for us were the veal schnitzel and the duck at the Adler Stuben, and (obviously) the Black Forest gateau at Cafe Diva. On our next visit, we hope to take advantage of the hotel's dog-sitting service and try their fine-dining Oscar's restaurant. We only managed to squeeze in one breakfast. It's buffet-style with all the usual offerings. We enjoyed it, but it didn't hit the highs of some other breakfast buffets which I've had in Germany over the years.

The hotel's Wellness Centre is possibly their top attraction. It's absolutely huge and really rather wonderful. The indoor pool is in a glass-walled hexagon with amazing views out into the surrounding parkland. I spent a delicious few hours splashing around in the perfectly heated indoor pool (while some older guests did some Jazzercising in the outdoor pool). My husband signed himself up for a massage which he enjoyed although he was a bit disappointed that the massages on offer focus more on relaxation and energy alignment and less on robust deep-tissue and sports massage styles.

Lastly, a word about service. We felt that we were very well looked after by everyone. The front desk was uniformly friendly and helpful and the restaurant staff were charming and efficient. Our room was always nice and clean and the housekeeping staff were very accommodating about our timings (very important for us because of having the dogs in the room). A special mention to Aylien who not only sorted out a last minute reservation change for us, but then did an amazing 5 hour (!!!) dog-sitting session for us - allowing us to travel to a restaurant an hour's drive away to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday. It really helped us out and was a big contributor to the success of our stay.

Overall, we had a great stay at Parkhotel Adler and plan to return next year.

An extraordinarily experience

We chose to celebrate my father’s 80th at this hotel. Friends and family came from all over Europe. Our expectations were more than met by the staff of this wonderful hotel. Every aspect was exactly as we had wished it to be. The location of this hotel is beautiful, each venue within the grounds of the hotel is exquisitely appointed - we used 2 venues for the celebration. The pool and wellness area is a place of peace and tranquility. I highly recommend the ParkAdler Hotel.
