A bastion of Southern charm with Asian-influenced design, the biggest rooms in the city, and a spa that’s the last word in pampering
They say everything is bigger in the south. That definitely applies to the rooms at the Mandarin Oriental and goes double for the bathrooms, which will inspire serious envy. Plush fabrics, a palette of beige, white and brown—these rooms are designed to soothe, so sink into the velour armchair or the deep-soaking tub and let them do their job. You can re-up the effect with a treatment at the much-lauded spa, which is a favorite spot for locals. It has 14 rooms, a “vitality pool” with enthusiastic jets, and a yoga studio. Top it all off with a “Georgia Peach” cocktail at Taipan, made with jasmine-infused gin and fresh peach puree.
In the Area
Exclusive Buckhead is known for its shopping options and the Mandarin Oriental is close to nearly all of them. Just across the road is Lenox Square, an enormous mall with enough shops to keep you busy for days. A few minutes down Peachtree Road is Phipps Plaza, which has slightly more upscale stores and a movie theater. Book ahead for dinner at St. Cecilia, a modern Italian restaurant with a fabulous five-course pasta tasting that carb-addicts will love. It’s an easy ten-minute stroll from the hotel, but build in time for a craft cocktail made with Gunfighter rye, salted cinnamon caramel, and fresh cider. A 15-minute drive south brings you to downtown Atlanta, where you’ll find the Botanical Garden and the High Museum of Art; if possible, try to schedule your drive for non-rush hours, when Atlanta’s traffic is less brutal. Or, hop on the MARTA at Buckhead Station, just a two-minute walk away.
