Historic Beaux Arts building with a popular cocktail bar and amenities designed for long-term stays
If you’re looking to live out your Rhett Butler fantasy, this is the place: the cast of Gone With the Wind stayed here for the Atlanta premiere, while the hotel’s historic details—marble columns, crystal chandeliers—give it an air of period splendor (it first opened its doors in 1911). The rooms are up to date, though: the Georgian Terrace underwent a major renovation in 2009 and since then has been revamping more suites, some of which have traded their kitchens for larger living areas. While the in-room décor is fairly unexciting, the rooms are comfortable and the suites enormous (some even have walk-in closets). The rooftop pool is the ideal place to cool off after a day of sightseeing in the Atlanta heat; follow a dip with dinner at Livingston, the glam onsite restaurant beloved for its early 20th-century aesthetic and modern American cuisine.
In the Area
This Midtown hotel is just across the street from the historic Fox Theatre; ask the concierge to get tickets if you want to see a show. Afterwards, be sure to stop in at Publik Draft House, just next door, to sample some of the dozens of bourbons on the menu. Downtown Atlanta is about a mile away, but the North Avenue Metro Station is a block from the hotel, which is helpful if you’re trying to avoid the city’s notorious gridlock. If you’re in town for the prestigious Atlanta Jazz Festival, held in Piedmont Park, you’ll be able to walk there from The Georgian Terrace. Are you the type who likes to pick up a cool new skill while on vacation? The city’s innovative Museum of Design, a short stroll from the hotel, has forward-thinking exhibits on wearable tech and offers open-to-the-public intro classes on coding and 3D printing.
