Eco-friendly retreat with just 26 rooms overlooking the Aegean sea on an under-the-radar Greek island
With its rugged beaches and mountainous meadows, Astypalea is an under-the-radar Greek island idyll. On a hillside overlooking one of the island's best beaches, Livadi, Pylaia Boutique Hotel is an eco-friendly retreat with designer digs and a top-notch restaurant. A series of whitewashed buildings linked by cobblestone paths wrap around an inviting pool and the 26 guestrooms are positioned towards the sea. All come with balconies or terraces overlooking the coves of Agios Konstantinos, Pappou and Tzanaki. Inside, a soothing color scheme (taupe, sea greens and blues) combines with traditional Aegean touches (whitewashed walls, wooden ceilings, window shutters). Soft Cocomat mattresses and Apivita toiletries up the luxe factor. Breakfast is served poolside and in the evening you can dine on classic Greek dishes and fresh seafood at the Plori Restaurant-Lounge Cafè Bar overlooking the island's Venetian castle. The eco-friendly property embraces solar power and rainwater harvesting and the designer lamps use energy-saving lightbulbs.
In the Area
Explore the imposing 14th-century castle built by the Quirini family when the island was under Venetian rule. The Archaeological Museum in Skala is home to a small collection of treasures from the prehistoric Mycenaean period to the Middle Ages. Head to Chora to see the island's traditional windmills which are still in use, although one has been transformed into a gallery and one houses Astypalea's tourist office. Livadi beach is close to the hotel and is a quiet spot to soak up the rays. A number of boat trips run throughout the summer to remote stretches of sand on neighboring islands.
