In the Area
Hit up WAVE and take your pick of water sport diversions, with free snorkeling gear, Hobie kayaks, windsurfing boards and Molokini glass-bottom canoes. The center also offers excursions ranging from parasailing, big game fishing and traditional Maldivian night fishing to catamaran sailings, and day and overnight trips to the resort’s private Gaathafushi island at a surcharge. To go a little deeper, DOWN UNDER offers PADI dive certification, two-tank dives around the Fesdu and Halaveli wrecks, and an overnight whale shark expedition aboard the luxury yacht ESCAPE. Back on shore, WET infinity pool makes a strong case for staying at the hotel with a popular bar and uninterrupted views.
How to Get There
We stayed at the W for 4 nights as an anniversary trip and wished that we could have stayed longer. W is only a short seaplane (20mins?) ride from Male. The island is quite small but beautiful with white sand beaches and reef right underneath. Although the corals are probably 70-80% dead on the house reef due to El Niño two years ago, sea life is vibrant and snorkelling is great. We heard that the reefs around W are actually considered very healthy compared to other areas of Maldives. It’s just so convenient and great to be able to snorkel right from the island (instead of taking a boat out), as you can do that anytime of the day. We’ve seen resident turtles in the house reef, baby sharks, and giant moray eel, in addition to countless different types of fishes.
Rooms: we picked the lagoon oasis for all 4 nights. Lagoon side is great for snorkelling and the sea colour is beautiful with nice contrast between sand and reef underneath. Overwater oasis is noisier and harder to snorkel (as the reefs are too close to water surface during low tide), but probably easier to see fishes from above and probably more popular if you are bringing kids (yes, once an adult only island, W is now accepting kids as well but there is no kids club). Some of the facilities show this resort’s age though (12 years?) and could use some updating.
Service: Staff here is great - special kudos to the general manager Anuj and assistant director of F&B Daniel. They helped us work out a few kinks and made sure every guest has a great experience. Housekeeping staff is attentive. Offers Chinese language staff too.
F&B: As expected for a resort. Surprisingly the alcohol isn’t that expensive. Shellfish is better than the fish I think (but to their credit, tropical fishes are probably less tasty / oily and firmer in texture than cold water ones). Wife enjoyed the W burger and lobster spaghetti the most.
Activities: being run by contractor but generally interesting. Would suggest that you go for the bigger ticket items like dolphin watching / whale shark spotting early in the stay so that in case you didn’t spot them the first time, there is still time to make amends. Some of the activities are quite expensive so watch out for the bill.
The good: sea life around the resort / snorkelling, beautiful scenery, friendly staff
Development areas: activities - there should be more activities in the morning such as fishing etc like the other resorts in the Maldives; games - we’d love to play some board games such as scrabble, especially during rainy days.
Tips: try to get on the morning seaplane to the resort and leave on the last seaplane out to maximise your time!
W Maldives is totally awesome!! It has the best house reef as the marine life around the island is abundant. Rooms (beach & ocean villa) are modern and chic!! It's really worth every penny!!
I would like to personally thank Sir Anuj, Sir Dan, Sir Mark, and Ms Jennifer for the warm welcome and hospitality shown to us during our stay.
This was the ultimate honeymoon for us. We stayed in many resorts and have yet to come across one that is this accomplished.
The place was lovely, the staff/service was top notch. The rooms and facilities are something special.
White pristine beaches. Great snorkeling and diving spots. Everything you would ever need/wish.
Thank you very much for everything.
We are truly lucky to have been able to visit the W Hotel in Maldieves.
We have recently returned from a two week stay at the W hotel on Fesdu Island. We have stayed in the Maldives several times before and have also frequented the W city hotels and as we love both, we felt this would be an excellent combination for a romantic holiday (first time away without children in nearly 20 years!) - and we were not disappointed !
From the moment we stepped off the plane at Male, to the moment we boarded the return flight, we were treated with the utmost respect and kindness from all the staff at W (known as talents). Everyone was friendly and nothing seemed too much bother for them - their motto "Whatever, Whenever' was certainly something they all live by.
When we first landed, people were surprised to hear we were staying for 14 nights - the average seems to be around a week - which made us worry that we would be bored - who were we kidding ?! By the time we left, we felt fully rested, relaxed and ready to go home again - but very sad to leave.
The island is very small, but there are three lovely restaurants, two bars, a beautiful pool and a good gym. If you do visit, then make sure you ask Mark (trainer) to stretch with you - he is excellent at ironing out any tension knots! Likewise, when at either of the bars, be sure to ask either Morgan or Arun to whip you up a delicious cocktail - they certainly know their mixology!
All the staff at the restaurants and bars are fantastic and too numerous to name, but each takes a pride in their work and ensures you are really looked after. The food is excellent, although I do have to say at this point, that it is rather pricey. If you are planning a stay, I would recommend looking into half board etc. But the quality and flare cannot be faulted.
Around the island, the maintenance team discreetly work to ensure the rooms, reception areas and island itself are beautifully maintained. We first stayed in a Beach villa and I had written to request a quieter location - away from restaurants and the seaplane etc. As the island is very small, nowhere is far from anything, but our villa was situated in a perfect location and had a lovely stretch of private beach right by the coral reef. We then moved to a water villa for a few days and were located on the lagoon side which is quieter than the ocean side and very private. Again, these are beautifully furnished with great attention to detail.
Overseeing your enjoyment, is PR guru..aka Chunky ! He works tirelessly to ensure your stay is exactly as it should be and is always there with a tale to tell - when he sleeps I'm not sure !
Anuj (Sharma) and his team have created a perfect retreat at W. If you are looking for an action packed holiday, with water sports, nightly entertainment and socialising, then this might not be the place for you. But if you are looking for an elegant, tranquil and friendly place in which to unwind and recapture your jest for life...then W is most definitely the place to be. As my husband said.. "When I arrived here, I felt like a tightly wound ball...now I feel like I have been literally unwound and recharged...ready to face the real world and all it's challenges"...that's enough for me !
From the moment we arrived we were welcomed by the staff and escorted to our room with a glass of champagne in hand. The overwater room was beautifully designed with an even more amazing view, it is just as pictured on the website. Truly breathtaking. I cant even express in words how very attentive and friendly the staff is. They are always welcoming you with a smile and willing to cater to any requests. If you are looking for something adventurous hit up Down Under the dive shop with all sorts of activites even if you dont want to get in the water they have something for you. But i have to say diving just at the home reef is amazing. With all sorts of fish, turtles, and reef sharks. But to really see the true beauty of the ocean is to go diving a short boat ride away. As if It couldnt get any better it does, the food is soo good. I love to sleep in but just the thought of breakfast woke me up i mean anything you could want for breakfast they had it. It was buffet style. All you can eat and included with your stay! Wow! They’d make you eggs anyway, pancakes, waffles, french toast, pastries, bakery items, fresh fruits, yogurt and as many fruit jams as you can think of. My fav was the fresh squeezed juice section. Which even if this didnt fancy you, they would make whatever you wanted. And if your not a breakfast person it gets better. Dinner at either Kitchen, Fish, or Fire, were all memorable with fresh fish caught that day, lobster, sushi, steak. I can go on forever.. Lets just leave it at the food was delicious. The cocktails were on the pricey side but thats what u would expect from a country that doesnt allow liquor. But that didnt stop us from drinking. The pineapple drinks were really good and even came with a fruit popsicle. Over at the spa we had an traditional indian massage which was very relaxing and romantic, As you walk up its very cool to see the small reef sharks swimming around and the school of fish swimming away from them. As we would walk back from the spa or dinner dont forget to look up at the stars, you will be amazed on the amount of stars you see as you hear the waves crashing, its those unforgettable moments that make this a very memorable place. Overall we had a great stay and a wonderful time at the W Maldives.
P.S. Shoutout to my man Azun, at Sip bar for great service and making some amazing drinks as well for being an overall great guy to talk to.
