With its impeccable white sand beaches, palatial thatch-roofed villas and stellar spa, Soneva Fushi sets the benchmark for rustic chic in the Maldives. When husband-and-wife team Sonu and Eva Shivdasani built this rustic retreat on the uninhabited island of Kunfunadhoo, the area was known only to savvy backpackers. These days the Soneva Fushi’s look and vibe are widely imitated, and the resort’s pool has grown considerably more crowded. But the Soneva Fushi continues to define the kind of barefoot luxury that the Maldives are known for, right down to the resort’s “no news, no shoes” policy, in which guests surrender their footwear at check-in.
Bed and Bath
The 65 villas share space on the densely forested 100-acre island, hidden behind swaths of plumeria trees that line the beach. The Shivdasanis are visionary eco-hoteliers, so the resort’s roofs are made from woven coconut leaves, and there are aggressive eco programs on-site, such as a recycling plant, a carbon offset initiative and a seawater cooling system. But luxury abounds: Villas have cozy canopy beds and elaborate garden bathrooms that open onto a rambling stone walkway and outdoor shower.
When hunger strikes, guests can traverse a tree canopy bridge for an organic dinner at the elevated Fresh in the Garden, or have a private beachfront picnic on a nearby desert island arranged by a thakaru (butler). The spa’s extensive menu is supplemented by visiting therapists, including acupuncturists, reiki specialists and naturopathic doctors from around the globe, making Soneva Fushi one of the best wellness retreats in the Maldives. Romance comes naturally at a classic Maldivian resort like this one. But nothing quite matches the experience of snorkeling among the tropical fish just steps from your room or seeing the stars from the observatory in the organic garden — both must-dos at this tropical escape.
How to Get There
This is our 8th Visit to Soneva and it keeps getting better. Nothing less that Perfect In every sense of the word. The service was impeccable, the food was amazing the staff were more than attentive and accommodating. The sensivity to the environment is applaudable. A special thank you to the General Manager Abishek, Head chef Senaka, Sira for his wonderful Sri Lankan Hoppers, Naim from water sports and all those in the dive center for going out of their way to accommodate us.Immerse yourself in everything Soneva has to offer and you will not be disappointed.
Soneva Fushi is forever my favourite in the Maldives. Villa 65, the food, service and the staff was out of this world. Extremely high quality and laid back at the same time. Exactly as it should be. THANKS! <3 Xo from Denmark
We could not wait to begin our summer break at Soneva Fushi and now we can't wait to get back!
Pristine environment, azure waters, white beaches and all good things in between - that's your Soneva sojourn.
Our villa was lovely and spacious - allowing for oodles of natural light from every nook and cranny. Our external bathroom included a beautiful water feature - a pond and the sound of water through the day, could not have been more soothing. A brilliantly included kids room which was close enough to keep an eye and yet private. My six year old loved spending time in 'her' space reading, coloring and chilling.
A big thumbs up from her on the kids club, the Den. Being Soneva enthusiasts and having visited Soneva Kiri multiple times, I'd like to compliment Soneva Fushi for creating a completely different space, and still retaining the essence which is fantastic care givers and kids activity overseers. Kids aside, it's equally enticing for grown ups!
Our star was Aju who was our little angel looking out for anything and everything we required during our stay. Her enthusiasm, genuine care and ever smiling, helpful personality shall always be remembered. She truly is an asset to the Resort - responding on the first ring when our friends had an urgent medical situation at 2 am in the morning and staying until it was resolved. Her commitment was outstanding.
The fabulous Food & Beverage team - Rilwan who was wonderful and assisted us during every meal, irrespective where we were dining, Iqbal who had us addicted to his quirky and flavourful cocktails, Sara who engaged us with great conversation and creative shooters (if only you'd magically show up with those every morning during breakfast at home, life would be perfect!)
Out of the Blue - it's where we had most of our meals - waves splashing at us, cuisine that makes you go Mmmm at every bite, can't possibly ask for more. The stand out aspect is how the entire team looks out for their little guests - the children. The little touches of kids cutlery to remembering their likes - they made it ever so special for them.
Thank you to the General Manager, Abhishek Sharma who truly is the most ideal host on this lovely island - he appears to have mastered the art of apparition - you'd see him everywhere.
You really can't ever have enough of Soneva and I highly recommend you plan your travel right away...
