How to Get There
We visited Milaidhoo in February/ early March for 16 nights and loved every minute. We stayed in a water villa overlooking the Lagoon and loved everything about the room and especially the deck and pool. We had such a relaxing time and our holiday was made very special by the superb team of staff at Milaidhoo who look after your every need. We went scuba diving most days and the dive team were outstanding. There are some great dive sites near Milaidhoo and the whole dive experience was a delight. The food was amazing - we loved Batheli for its unique intimate and beautiful setting and of course the food was divine. Ocean restaurant is also great and the breakfast is just outstanding. On several occasions the chef prepared a special curry for us which was greatly appreciated.
A huge thank you to all the staff at Milaidhoo for a wonderful holiday - we will definitely return
In November 2018 it was the fourth time we've been on this wonderful small island with the incredible staff - together with our 2 daughters.
But let's start in 2016 first - we got to know by chance about a new Maldives resort, which opened in November 2016. After a short email conversation with the island and especially my concerns to remaining construction works - because we planned to go there end of November 2016 - we got an acceptable opening price and the management promised us that we won't have any inconveniences due to remaining works.
And we booked for 2 weeks directly on the island - beach villa and water villa.
And our totally relaxing time started at the airport, we gave the baggage and our documents to the airport host and only had to wait together with a drink in the Milaidhoo lounge for the waterplane. After a pleasant flight we arrived on the island and what a surprise, the whole management team was waiting for us – we’d been one of the first guests at opening time.
And we never forget the most outstanding events:
Second week - after the first two days in the water villa Shuhan asked me if we like the villa, I personally was more impressed by the beach villa – he offered to move again to a beach villa for the second week (no additional cost) – what a generous and uncomplicated concession!
We booked half pension, the second evening while we studied the menu card the executive sous-chef asked what we would like to have for dinner and he asked us to close the menu card. Since that evening the fantastic cooking team surprised us every evening with an excellent special menu – what a guest service above the already high standard!
Starting the second week I took a cold (brought it already from Switzerland), a kind of bronchitis. After a helpful visit of the island medical doctor, all the remaining days I was surprised with a special fruit plate and drink.
… and even much more surprises during the first holidays on Milaidhoo.
We totally felt living in paradise, as guests, never treated intrusively, every time to have fun and happiness together and also as part of the island family.
Second and third time we also enjoyed great unforgettable moments on the island and with the whole family staff.
Last November we surprised our two adult daughters with that fantastic paradise. What a great reunion at the jetty again with the whole management – we felt like coming home again. We booked 2 beach villas but as a totally unexpected surprise the management upgraded us into the beach residence – wow.
But we came to the island (booked long time ago) with my wife which got few weeks before a terrible message about throat cancer. So, we could start our (perhaps last) holidays right before she started strong treatment at the hospital. Really the whole staff gave their best to give to my wife all possible support. Especially Dimu the F&B manager supported us in all possible ways giving her liquide food as well as our host Abdulla (most of the time invisible) who arranged everything every time before we were ready to take.
We snorkeled often more than once a day the very nearby house reef. Our daughters swam with 5 dolphins in a distance of 3 meters; at night snorkeling (ups - I had a huge respect about it) a 2m stingray crossed our way in a distance of about 4-5m. Now I’d go one more time – night snorkeling together with a dive center host – an outstanding experience.
And even more outstanding events:
An invitation to a wine tasting dinner – fantastic for myself, not that amusing for my wife, but a great event with an extra mile given from the grill restaurant staff.
At the end all we have to say the whole staff are not only employees of an island resort and do their job as described in a task list, the Milaidhoo staff is living a culture of making people even guests happy every day as well as they often can read the wishes from the guest eyes and from time to time put some surprises on top of it.
Such a holiday on Milaidhoo – as they write – you definitely will make your own great story.
Milaidhoo, dear family members we’ll come again!
We are repeater guests and seasoned travellers to the Maldives (approx. 10 times). In November 2017, in Milaidhoos „Rookie year“, we already stayed there for fourteen days. So after nearly 16 months of abscence (which definitely been too long), we decided to return and see how things have developed or changed. Again, we were overwhelmed by the experience. But let’s start with first things first:
On arrival, we have been gently picked up by the very charming Milaidhoo airport team and after a short check in at the TMA counter, we were brought to the milaidhoo seaplane lounge with their private vehicle. There, we were picked up by Shuhan, the GM, who seemed to have had a business meeting in Male. At latest from this point on, it started to feel like returning to a large family friends.
After some waiting time, we finally boarded our seaplane and without a stopover, we finally arrived at Milaidhoo before noon.
Upon arrival, the jetty was „crowded“ with very many familiar faces from the front office team, including Celine, the resort manager, Nisha the Sales manager, Sharufeez, the GEM and our island host, Abdulla, the senior butler, who already attended us during our last stay and deliberately waited for the day of our arrival to say hello, before going off on a well deserved vacation.
Reason 1: Continuity
Altogether, we have been very delighted to see that in a time of many new resort openings and moving staffs, Milaidhoo managed to keep most of its staff and nearly all key positions together. Many of them were promoted meanwhile or underwent expansive job-trainings to enhance their skills and experiences. It seemed as if they all were proud and motivated to be a part of the „family“. Being self-employed ourselves, we know and appreciate how important it is to have a continuity in key-positions and satisfied employees. Here we would definitely say, the managements’ mission is definitely accomplished.
Reason 2: The villas
We stayed in a water pool villa (like last time) and as we can say for now, these are still among, if not, our very favourites in the Maldives. The sleeping quality is excellent, a silent aircondition, an adorable Maldivian Swing and daybed close to the enormous pool and the most convenient access to ,both, the sea and the pool. You can conveniently use the stairs, when preparing for a snorkel and thanks to the mats, they are not slippery. Last but not least, an excellent level of maintenance, no loose tiles, no scratches or heads of nails on the surface, spotless daybeds and cushions. Milaidhoo does not have an I pad or tablet to open and close curtains or regulate the ac, what we do prefer, since it assures that everything will work all the time and is not sensitive to any connection breakdowns of the electronic devices.
Just for the sake of completeness, the maintenance level continues in all accessible areas of the resort and was the same in the beach villas, we had a look at.
Reason 3: The food:
Milaidhoo does offer either b&b, half-Board or AI, what they call Gourmet Plan and there are three different outlets, plus the all day compass bar for pizza and snacks, where guests can choose among.
Ocean, their main and all day dining restaurant does offer a multi-origin cuisine ranging from Asian to Mediterranean cuisine, curries, fish, steaks, pasta, salads and classics from all over the world. For lunch, which goes from 12 to 6 pm, they have a menu-card containing about seven starters and mains originating from all corners of the world, where the guests can choose among. Nevertheless, chef Piyal and his team will do their umtost to fulfill any wishes off the menu card, if they are addressed in time and the ingredients are in stock. Still for us, the regular lunch card was more than sufficient. Twice a week, Ocean runs a comprehensive Asian (Monday) and Mediterranean (Thursday) Buffet for dinner, with live cooking and comprehensive grill station.
The shore-line grill focusses on delicious meat and fish dishes and plates for sharing, served in a romantic setting either on the beach or in one of their comfortable Pavillons with view over the lagoon.
The Batheli restaurant, which is their signature restaurant, offers Maldivian cuisine, a Maldivian set menu, and a few dishes from „neighbouring“ Asian countries. All of that on three traditional Maldivian sail-boats which are based on the lagoon side of the island. Pre-dinner, guests can enjoy some sunset cocktails at the Batheli Bar, which is located on the first boat closest to the shore. The cocktail list at compass bar and Batheli slightly differs, a good reason for taking turns visiting both places.
The compass bar is the main bar and offers pizzas, burgers and some light snacks. On six days a week there is decent live music from two musicians, who also do belong to the Milaidhoo family and are not hired just as contractors.
The quality of the food and the drinks at all outlets is very good to excellent, potions are more than decent and the level of service is really top notch. We did not get bored at any time from the choice of food outlets and even for the last few days it was really a tough decision, where to apply for dinner, since all places are so inviting and really offer more than decent choice to choose among. Finally, we ended up 6-4-4, because of the delicious buffets at Ocean and the „tradition“ of our first and last evening taking place there.
Reason 4: The pricing
Even if you are not on GP, you can put your mind and wallet at ease. At least for a resort of this category. Unlike at most other places, Milaidhoo does already quote all prices net - that means 23,2% tax and service charge are already included and still most dishes, drinks and wines are numerically equally cheap or even cheaper than at other places, where these are quoted ++. That makes it a lot easier for guests to calculate and to compare, when it comes to prices. We highly appreciate that.
Especially the lunch menu at ocean, we find to be an absolute bargain, with two courses at 65 $ net and three at 75 $ net, so that you get a starter and a dessert for roughly 25$ net together. As mentioned previously, the selection and quality of the dishes is really decent.
To give another example, a pizza Margherita at Compass Bar comes at 22USD net and for us, dough and sugo-wise is one of (if not) the best Pizza in the Maldives. For Maldives luxury standards a real bargain. Usually the cheapest pizza in this category of resorts will seldomly go below 26++.
We highly appreciate that the f&b Manager does find a good way to maximise revenue by creating incentives for the guests to increase their consumption habit, because they should not feel as milked as in other resorts.
Reason 5: Danushka
Danushka is the head sommelier at Milaidhoo.
Normally, we would not put an emphasize on a single team member in the middle of a review, but here we have to break the rule, because he is so passionate and knowledgeable about his profession. Occupationally, we are also into wine and seldomly find any convincing consultation. However, in his case, it was a pleasure taking his advice on our choice for the evening. And he could really enhance our experience, with his detailed knowledge about his repertoire. On the last evening, we did a wine testing with him. It was a pleasure, thank you!
Reason 6: The beauty of a small island:
Even on our first visit, the vegetation was already lush for an island being just one year in operation. Now, nearly one and a half years later, it has elevated to its full potential. Beautiful flowers, lush bushes, big plants, trees, the sukkulents planted alongside the jetty, in front of the villas. And most important for us: everything is well kept. No rotting leaves and old coconuts lying around, gently cut down trees (for the rainy season). They even seem to move plants from time to time in order to protect the soil from exhausting and keeping minerals balanced. Small maintenance is done here and there, wherever it is necessary. Everything seems to be solved „in a minute“. The island is really neat and well kept.
Reason 7: The reef
Did you ever want to know how it feels like being the biggest fish in an aquarium? Well, then maybe a snorkelling tour around Milaidhoos house reef will help you out.
Yes, the current can be a little challenging sometimes, but the island is small and you can encircle it in less than 90 minutes without a hassle. Just go with the current and since everything is quite close, you can easily reach the shore from nearly everywhere and re-enter the reef at another point. We encircled the island nearly every other day, because it was such an enriching experience. Fishwise you have all the usual suspects in a great number and variety, plus turtles (mainly in front of the beach villas and spa), rays and even sharks are now more common on the reef. Fishwise (number and variety), Milaidhoo remains our favourite among the reefs we have snorkeled so far.
Reason 8: Tranquillity
That has been our only minor point of concern during our last visit. But since then,
Shuhan and his team have done their utmost on this topic:
As a consequence, seaplanes regularly do not take off and land on the resort‘s platform anymore before 10 am, but arrivals and departures will take place at neighbouring platforms during this time. Even during the day, you seldomly hear any seaplane arriving or departing. As a new feature, there is a private seaplane charter from time to time, so in general waiting time and convenience of transport will be improved for guests.
And even though, Milaidhoo is centrally located in Baa, we did get this deserted island feel for the time of our stay.
Generally, we did not feel an increase of traffic compared to the last years, even though it is main season and many resorts are likely to run at high occupancy.
Reason 9: structure of guests
Obviously, if you stay in a multi-cultural environment during your vacation, your behaviour should adapt to a common standard, which does not offend any other vacationer. Unfortunately, that is not given at some other resorts, when guests bring their cultural habits to the place they stay at.
Here at Milaidhoo it is luckily different. All guests are considerate and well-behaved and it is a nice getting by of guests from all different nationalities. Milaidhoo is definitely not a place for party people and the ambiance is peaceful and quiet. Milaidhoo has an age-restriction from 9yrs+ and no Kids facilities, so it is rather targeting at couples than at families. Still, there were a few well behaved teens around. According to the staff and what is in-line with our experience, most guests at milaidhoo are from mid-and Northern Europe!
Reason 10: listen to your wife....
To all gentlemen out there, let your wives decide whether to return to Milaidhoo or not. And though, it is mostly us, who have to pay, it is them to first soak up the magical atmosphere of extraordinary places. So let them guide you where to and we will manage the rest. My wife and me, we both love Milaidhoo and even though I already had a date fixed, it was her, who always asked, whether Milaidhoo was on the agenda or not.
So, thank you to the whole Milaidhoo family on the front and behind the scenes for once again creating so many memorable moments for us.
Justus & Rabeem from Ocean for always organising our special requests, Shippey for your attentive and polite service, chef Piyal for the best dumpling soup, Sivath, Shifraz for always creating magical evenings at Batheli, „Sonnenschein“ for teaching us some Dhihevi, Nuwan, Lucky and the whole bar squad from compass, the whole shoreline team for the extraordinary birthday setup and „Mr. Milaidhoo...and it is not even close“, Dimu, for supervising all that and delivering such an excellent service and food.
Last but not least and probably most important, our island host Hussain, who took over from Abdulla after one day and always went the extra the mile for us and fulfilled all of our request not just quickly, but always in the best sense and meaning and in a very personal manner.
We love the laid back and relaxed atmosphere on Milaidhoo and will recommend it to all of our family, friends and business partners. Certainly there are even more reasons for a visit. Thanks again to Shuhan and his family. We had a wonderful time!
Our reviews are honest and transparent. We are not bloggers or paid or seduced by any destination for our views. We are impartial and fair.
This was our third visit with our 4th visit already booked for January 2020.
We arrived on 28th December and stayed for New Year and my 60th Birthday. Great arrival and greeting by the staff at the airport. From this point onwards nothing is 'our' problem and nothing is a problem.
Our flight to the island was fine as usual. I am very excited to hear that Milaidhoo is introducing its own plane in the coming year.
At the jetty we were greeted by the Miladhoo team. Our luggage was whisked away to our beach villa while we went to Compass Bar for our first drink and to see our old friends from the staff team.
My diving gear was sent to Ocean Stories and prepared in my own box for the coming dives. I made 2 dives every other day. The quality off the dives and cost of the dives were really good and excellent value. The majority of divers were using Nitrox.
Our room was spot on. Clean, tidy, well equipped and knowing about our preferences the inside and outside fridges were populated with beers, lemon and gin. What more can one ask for?
Our luggage was unpacked and the sent for pressing, within hours we had back what we needed to get us started. By the way I took my shoes off at the arrival lounge in Male and put them back on 16 days later, literally, no shoes for 16 days.
My dive gear appeared, as expected, on the boat for my first dive. This is the only dive centre I have been too where my equipment arrives every day ready to go, where I literally do nothing other than check the Nitrox readings, conduct then safety checks, sign my name and dive. The team at Ocean Stories led by Marc is amazing. They know their stuff and they know where to find stuff. The briefings are excellent, they fully replicate what is happening beneath the surface. While the dive leaders were fully clad in the wet suits I was able to dive in a rash vest and shorts with no concerns about temperature at any time.
Throughout the trip we saw so much including; Nudi branch, lion fish, lobster, shrimp, dolphin, reef shark, nurse shark, octopus, Moray Eel, different rays and the usual variances of fish. By the way, the house reef has loads of the above. The coral in the house reef area is growing back really well. The year on growth was very noticeable.
On my 60th Birthday the team planned and made a great dive for me completed with a fantastic video and photo album, thanks to everyone for that.
Sarji Single is called that for a reason. A Sarji single is like a UK quadruple!! Their generosity with the alcohol measures is spot on. Sarji Single is now Sarji Double and we are expecting that by next year there may even be Sarji Treble. Congrats to Sarji and his new wife, we wish you both a long and happy future.
Compass bar has a great team. Nothing is ever too much trouble. The guys look after their guests very well anticipating their needs to an exemplary standard. Great work. The pool has just the right temperature, its a great place to hang out in the day for swimming and at night just for chilling.
The special event on the beach for my birthday was amazing. This was led and inspired by Dimu with his amazing team. The Ferrari 599 GTO cake was a really clever move, just about the only 599 GTO I will ever afford :). The menu was outstanding as was the band, the photographer and of course, as usual, the service. I could not possibly have wished for a better experience. The very next day I was presented with a fully printed photo album of my birthday celebrations, now that’s service.
Ocean Restaurant is quite amazing. It takes huge discipline not to over indulge at breakfast before diving. Every morning when I arrived I didn't need to order anything, the team knew what I would want, it just arrived while I read the UK news from their printed newspaper. Great service guys.
The grill is exceptional. Forget the menu. Talk to the team and tell them what you want, they will get it. The quality is excellent. I have seen the wine knowledge and expertise grow over the last visits, its really very good. I am a wine freak, as Dimu knows, but they know what we like delivering perfect results every time. Great knowledge, amazing choices, you do not need to spend a fortune to get a good wine out of their selection,
Finally for eating there is Ba'Theli. This is without doubt one of the worlds finest restaurants of its kind. Whatever you choose will be amazing. My suggestion is that you ask the chef to produce a family style meal for you. You can do this for 2 people easily. You will not experience a Maldivian meal or similar menu anywhere in the world better than this. A lot of people have raved about this restaurant and rightly so. It’s a great location for sundowners.
The Japanese experience is really very good and well worth the experience.
New Year was fabulous. Great vibe. Amazing guests, outstanding service. Good to have the staff involved. I was done by 2.00am. Excellent value with a magnificent firework display.
So how does all this happen ? In any business this starts from the top, Shuhan is a leader of incredible skill. The culture he has created oozes from the very pores of the team he leads.
Our Butler Husy is excellent, his choice of football team is somewhat dubious otherwise he is flawless. The key thing for me with Husy is that he knows what we are doing and where we are at all times. His discretion is more than we could expect. His dedication to our exceptional demands is more than we could expect. He never says no, ever.
The F&B team is led by Dimu. Dimu makes everyone feel as though you are his extended family. BUT, what is quite incredible is that his methods have permeated throughout the entire team. I have never seen this replicated so well at any other establishment anywhere.
One area I have not mentioned is the SPA. If I may I would like to say that what Steph does here is a real WOW. The team are really very good, the treatments are fair value, the quality of the experience is just ‘mmmmmmmmm’ and they tolerate my snoring. I am not a spa person but I can't resist this experience. What a way to get an afternoon snoozette :)
Now we are set for next year and our expectations are high. We are looking forward to seeing and experiencing Nautilus. It’s my wife 50th birthday, the bar has been set high, I am excited, intrigued, wondering and imaging just what the team will deliver for a special lady on her very, very special day.
We are frequent travelers to the Maldives, we have been more than 20 times on different Islands, all have their charm but Milaidhoo is one of a kind, that’s why we have been there already three times, and hopefully more to come.
Since my wife is suffering from severe food allergies, it is not easy to find a right resort where they can take care of her needs, gluten free, no corn, no dairy and no eggs. But from the beginning the management and the chefs made sure that she didn’t have to worry at all, it was fantastic. Since her needs are special, she even could order off the menu and it was no problem thanks to Piyal, Jayadi and Seabass.
We stayed in a water villa, beach villa and the residence, all with a private pool. Each one was different but wonderful. Since you can open the whole window front, it gives you a feeling of being free and connected with nature. All villas are very private and romantic and spacious, perfect getaway if you are seeking a romantic atmosphere. Our rooms have been very clean and if we needed something extra, the management took care immediately of all our needs and preferences. We also had one of the best butlers we had so far on our travels, Hussain knew what we needed and was always one step ahead of our wishes, absolutely excellent service.
We went to the spa almost every day, thanks to Kumar and his great Yoga lessons, usually we don’t do yoga that often, but that changed with Kumar.
Our special thanks as well go to Jellica and Jonathan, the musicians. We requested quiet a lot of songs, and they delivered them all, and even if they didn’t had the song we wished for to play right away, they took the challenge, learned it in their free time and a surprised us with the requested song later on. One more time thanks to the both of you, we will cherish all the moments with you.
The most memorable experience was the wonderful cocktails at the Compass Bar, right in front of the sunset and smooth live music in the background. The whole team, Nuwan, Sajeed and Miyuru and their colleagues made our stay very special, even if your drink is not on the menu, challenge them, they will deliver with a heartwarming smile. Also the Sommelier Danushka, thanks for the great suggestions and the wonderful wine tasting we could experience.
After all the years of travelling to the Maldives and visiting the best Resorts like Velaa, Anantara, Conrad, Beachhouse, Alila, Soneva , Amilla, Kanahura, Laamu etc etc…. we must say Milaidhoo had one of the most professional and competent management and the highest service standards we have ever experienced.
