How to Get There
We had booked a 10 nights all-inclusive package through OV Holidays (Ms Ava) and was very satisfied with the service and promptness of answering questions.
Arriving in Male, and once we had picked up our luggage, we were greeted by our OV Holiday representative in the arrival hall. Then escorted to the Domestic, which is only a few minutes walk away. Our luggage and check in was now being taken care of for the Domestic flight while we were waiting in the lounge. Unfortunately, we had to wait 3 hours before our flight departed from Male to Dharavandhoo Airport, which is only a 20 min trip on a 50-seater Dash 8 (300) turboprop aircraft (not seaplane). Then it was only a 5 min speedboat trip to the Kihaa Resort. Overall, very efficient and comfortable.
Check in was smooth, but in the dark almost, and information received was useful. Then we proceeded to our Sunset Prestige Pavilion Beach Villa (#314) which we had booked for 5 nights. Great location on the island and great for sunset. Also, very near the main restaurant (Malafaiy) where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served. The villa is big and in general comfortable. Toilet and bath are outdoors, so it’s hot and humid, but privacy is 100% guaranteed with a high wall. The villa was a bit tired and could use some fresh paint throughout. Bed was a bit firm while pillows were soft. We managed. Air conditioning was not efficient to cool the room down to a comfortable temperature, although we had it on 16 degrees Celsius all day/night. TV worked ok but we were not successful in using our Apple TV. Internet connection is poor, taking into consideration the resort is advertising they have high-speed internet...
Having paid for an all-inclusive package, we surprisingly found out that the resort had run out of beer, gin, rum and other alcoholic beverages! Apparently, something to do with a license. So, the minibar in the villa was only stocked with Coke and Sprite, and plenty of bottled water. At check-in we were not informed about this matter, but when we approached reception the following day the staff explained and made appropriate compensation arrangements. The issue was rectified after day 4 of our holiday.
The infinity pool next to the main restaurant and Undhoali Bar is big and shallow (1.2 m). The water becomes very warm in the afternoon. Service here is very good and the 2 Indonesian ladies are very friendly and fast. They made every effort possible to substitute the missing alcoholic beverages and still made some good cocktails. Although, no beer or white wine. The beach with its turquoise blue water is just 20-30 m from the pool. Water temperature is cooler and more pleasant. The sun is very strong and it’s hot and at times humid.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the main restaurant was good and they had a variety of food for everyone’s liking I would say. The Front Office Manager and Food & Beverage Manager continuously tried to solve the situation with alcoholic beverages by arranging compensation through a free spa treatment for us, a romantic dinner on the beach and a bottle of champagne in the room. This was gratefully appreciated.
Our last 5 nights were at the Water Villas (#408). Again, same issues as the previous villa with regards to internet, air conditioning and condition of the villa. Unfortunately, the design of the Water Villa did not include a terrace for direct sunbathing. However, it was great to be able to walk straight into the shallow waters for some snorkelling.
Walking around the island takes around 20-25 min and is very beautiful. The sunrise is around 7am and sunset around 7pm.
Overall, we had a great time at Kihaa and was able to relax to the fullest. The staff are amazing and super-friendly.
We hope the resort management will follow up on the issues listed in this and other reviews.
I will start with the positives with our 8-day trip to Kihaa:
+ Transfers to/from the airport in Male are very easy, with a member of staff assisting you at Male airport. You hand your bags over and the next time you see them they're in your room.
+ The island is lovely with, great beaches, a house reef that is easily accessible with lots of snorkelling.
+ The main pool is very clean, albeit VERY warm; with a pool bar close by with good levels of service (when there were drinks, more on that later).
+ The included excursion (selection of 4) was nice. We did the morning Dolphin watching and were lucky enough to see several pods. We also did a night fishing trip, with our catch being served to us for lunch the following day.
+ The pool party was really good fun.
+/- The buffet was generally of a good standard, with a wide selection that changed daily. The noodle bar was a personal favourite. However, it was disappointing that ice-cream was only severed at night, not during the heat of the day at lunch.
The most frustrating thing was that there were no options food wise outside of the set meal times included in the all-inclusive package. Not even some crisps or nuts at the pool bar.
This was supposed to be a relaxing holiday and unfortunately, we spent a portion of the first 4 days dealing with various issues, which are as follows:
- No beer, white wine, or gin upon arrival, or for the majority of our trip. We were never informed of this, even being served non-alcoholic beer when we ordered on the first day. After some back and forth with the Food & Beverage manager we received a bottle of champagne and excursions as an apology.
- Low, almost non-existent water pressure in our first room. This was also an issue in our second room. I even had issues when showering at 5am before leaving at 6am on our last day, so it cannot be a case of everyone else was showering at the same time. For a supposed 5* resort, such basic things as being able to shower should not be something you need to worry about. There was a lovely bath in the bathroom, but after 30 minutes of running it was evident the bath was for show . . . not use.
- Internet; or lack there off. We came on holiday to relax, so this is not a big issue, but we ended up moving rooms due to half the island basically having issues with the telephone, internet and TV.
Finally, some suggestions to the management on minor things I think would improve the stay of other guests:
1) Ensure you can provide what you advertise. According to many reviews on TripAdvisor, you have ran out of beer on numerous occasions; amongst other items at the bar.
2) If you have ran out of products, please be honest!
I ordered a Cubra Libre (Dark Rum, Coke & Lime) towards the end of the trip, which tasted wrong. Upon questioning the bar about this, they had used white rum, as they had run out of dark rum. Had they been upfront and honest, it would have been fine, and I could have ordered something else.
3) Hotel room doors have large gap around them when closed; addressing this issue would have several benefits:
a) fewer bugs/mosquito's in the rooms
b) reduce electricity bills as so much heat is let into the rooms that the air conditioning never in an entire week got to the temperature we set it at.
4) Have an offering between meal times for all-inclusive guests. Even something as simple as fruit, an ice-cream, some crisps pretty much anything at all would be an improvement.
5) Have fridges at the buffet for cold items, such as salads, cheese, desserts etc. It is almost always over 30 degrees C in the day, so if you arrive to lunch an hour after it had opened these items are not at their best and it seems a shame to have all of these nicely prepared items spoiled by the simple fact of leaving them in the heat.
Overall I would not return to the resort, or possibly even the Maldives. For the money I think there are much better alternatives.
We had amazing time at this hotel, stayed for 12 nights, with my husband celebrating our honeymoon and honestly it was the our best holidays so far! Amazing location, turquoise water, romantic villas, gorgeous sunsets! Hotel had a variety of food choices and very friendly, carrying staff! We were impressed by the service of Ibrahim, hardworking, polite, attentive, kind, providing excellent service and who was always reading our minds and greeting us with a refreshing cocktail on the beach! Another person who gained our hearts was Anna, preparing the most amazing coffee in the morning and even on her day off, she took some time to meet us on the way to the airport and hand us a small souvenirs from Maldives! We were very happy since this was the only souvenir that we actually have form this amazing trip! All the main restaurant staff were very responsive and very pleasant as well!
Me and my husband would like to thank again the personnel, as definetly their staff ensured us a fabulous, unforgettable honeymoon!
This will be the hardest review I have written.
First if all - it would be a 3.5* out of 5.
Great service from Kihaa staff at MLE to meet and greet - don't see you luggage until after the domestic flight.
Domestic flight was about 40mins late (this is normal).
Initially we had 2 rooms on north side (written on luggage tag at MLE) - but when got to island - there was a technical issue with one of our rooms - so upgraded to Sunset Beach Pavilion rooms ( finally were 312/314 ).
This is a high point for KIHAA - rooms a very large with lots of lights. Very private.
Best bed I have slept in at Maldives. Rustic but modern feel to the rooms.
Huge terrace around room with lots of seating.
Another high point. KIHAA has very very good beach around most of the island.
Soft sand again in most parts of the beach.
The lagoon on north side has wonderful colours.
Lots of fish life - and larger reef life.
Only snorkelled along all of south side wall - reef sharks / moray eels. Not a lot of fish shoals (or fish soup).
Easy access from beach entry points or the dive and arrival jetties.
Ocean Dimensions have a great team. Dive sites are close by (20 mins max on boat).
I really enjoyed some challenging (for me) dives.
This is the low point for KIHAA.
However i will mention the bar staff (main pool bar) - they are really super good - engaging, friendly and happy - they do a great job.
Now the bad - main restaurant - the buffet food is average, nothing really stands out. It is not bad, just not very good (compared to other islands). Staff looked unhappy.
The service was poor and chaotic at times - daily having to repeat drinks orders / waiting ages for service is not acceptable.
Now the WORST for KIHAA -
No white wine for out entire holiday ??
Also run out of gin on our last day.
(on top or running out of beer 3 times over last few months),
So KIHAA - what is going on ? There is no explanation given.
Asked F&B manager on 1st night for white wine - it will be coming tonight or tomorrow - he then avoided me all week. Just not acceptable.
They do some things very well at KIHAA - the rooms / main bar, also good entertainment (singer on beach / fire / loungers - was really nice),
It is a beautiful island, great beach and good reef.
But the F&B was a beg let down - GET IT SORTED !
Based on this, KIHAA is the only resort we would not return to.
A stunning island with real natural beauty. Snorkelling was awesome with an abundance of sea life/ coral.
Food was varied and tasty, so thumbs up to the chefs. All staff were great and very friendly and professional both at the restaurant and bars. Housing keeping was always done each day though there were a few times they forgot to refill our mini bar.
Every night we had a very comfortable and peaceful nights sleep (beds was lovely). And appreciated the honeymoon decoration on arrival.
The excursions were fun especially the dolphin cruise though nightfishing was pretty rough and ready/ basic.
Spa was yet again awesome and staff were very professional and polite!
There was a little issue half way through the trip with drinks. As they ran out of white wine, not a massive issue for us but the management needs addressing for this matter! not the staff on the ground. As have read this a couple times on here now.
We would definitely recommended this place but for it to be full 5*it needs to be stop on in my eyes.
