The Lowdown

The Maldives take beauty to a whole new level. Here, stunning is routine. This paradise-like place in the Indian Ocean is home to some of the world’s best beaches, with wondrous white sands and electric-blue waters unmatched the world over – all fringing some 1,200 islands that make up this transfixing country. And that’s just above the water. Below, you’ll find vibrant tropical fish, spectacular corals and submerged caves, providing an underwater mecca for snorkelers and divers of all levels.
It’s only fitting that the brand-new Finolhu, in the UNESCO world biosphere of Baa Atoll, is rather spectacular itself. This five-star resort brings cool, retro-inspired design to the timelessly beautiful Maldives. Classic movies provide a backdrop to the pinball machines in the glam beach club, Milk Bar operates as an old-school tuck shop serving up smoothies and snacks, while the 60s- and 70s-inspired spa puts a pastel-hued spin on the concept of wellness.
There’s plenty of substance to match this groovy style, too. The marine HUB (Home of the Under-water Biosphere) offers a range of activities, from diving, snorkeling and fishing to sunset and dolphin cruises, while Thunderball organizes a slew of watersports on the adjacent lagoon. Dining options include a seafood shack, Asian fine dining, a North African restaurant and a beach-club menu, while accommodations promise more postcard-perfect touches: dreamy over-water villas, your very own slice of paradise.

You’ll be living the tropical dream here at Finolhu, as you wake up in an over-water villa with direct ocean access. There’s a free-standing bath to laze in, while drinking in the Finolhu Lagoon panorama, plus indoor and outdoor showers and a spacious sundeck with lounge chairs. The Outdoor Pool villas are even larger, at 1,938 square feet, with beautiful azure accents inspired by the French Riviera. These luxurious retreats offer a sunset view and your very own freshwater pool.

The resort offers a plethora of drinking and dining spotse. The two-story Baa Baa Beach Club is a hip spot for refueling, tropical-style, any time of day, with live cooking stations at breakfast. Healthy salads and sushi sit alongside pizzas, platters and sweet treats on the all-day menu. After dark, you can sip cocktails, watch retro movies, play pinball and groove to the DJ’s picks. Savor succulent seafood at Fish & Crab Shack; feast on Mandarin duck, snapper, lobster and other fine-dining Asian fare at the colorful Kanusan; and take an aromatic tour of North Africa through Baahaa Grill’s mezzes and tagines.Finolhu even has an old-school tuck shop, Milk Bar, that serves up refreshing smoothies and snacks, alongside delicious essentials like ice cream, chocolate and wine. There’s also a home-delivery service for decadent vacation-dining in bed.

You can preen and pamper yourself to pastel-hued heights at The Cove Club. There are 10 candy-colored treatment divans, each dedicated to a pivotal diva of the 60s or 70s, where you can take your pick from massages and beauty treatments. There are also yoga and meditation on offer, plus a fitness center, a movement pavilion and an outdoor gym.

On this dreamy atoll, powdery white sands dotted with swaying palms stretch alongside the spectacularly blue sea. You can explore your watery surroundings with the help of HUB, (Home of the Under-water Biosphere), which offers fishing, diving, jet-skiing, sunset cruising, dolphin-watching and even star-gazing, while respecting the natural habitat of Baa Atoll’s UNESCO world biosphere.Thunderball is your one-stop shop on Palm Beach for motorized and non-motorized watersports in the lagoon, and Finolhu has even dedicated a patch of paradise to tennis, with floodlit courts and a professional coach waiting to be used. Underwater-photography enthusiasts can make a beeline for Hanifaru Bay, a marine-protected area that teems with plankton-feeding manta rays from May until November.

Had a great time at Finolhu. First of, the rooms are clean and the bed Super comfortable. The facilities are superb; there are 4 restaurants, a cafe or milk bar, a tennis court, gym, sea sports centre, a beach club/ bar, a children centre , a spa and even a clinic etc... Service is immaculate.

Food at the restaurants are exceptional. The main restaurant serves different themes of food for each day of the week. Food is authentic and has good variety. The deserts are to die for. The downside is you will overindulge. But I’m not complaining.

One of my favourite place was the fish and crab shack. It has a Robinson Crusoe feel. Isolated but scenic. And there is a strip of elongated beach that leads from the main resort area to the shack, which is gorgeous and about nearly 2kms Long. You can walk or take a boat. I would recommend walking.

During the day, you can either engage in the various activities or chill by the beach club that plays groovy tunes throughout. At night, it hots up with live entertainment before its party time.

The people that run the resort are awesome. You get not just a smile but actual genuineness from each and everyone of them. Had some good conversations with some of the staff. Special shout out to Mauricio and Asma( for setting the tone right when we arrived), Ahmad(the roomboy for taking special care of the room), Sheehan and Bob(for their great professional service at the bar), Shuaib(for transporting us in the buggy Everyday n giving great advice on where to snorkel), Mohammad(our waiter for our lunch at the Shack) Besah and Miday(for organising the activities and being such fun loving people) Gabi (the girl in charge of tennis, for hanging out with us) Igor and Ramona(from the dive centre for their meaningful company and tips) and Naufaul( for his craziness and dance moves; he is the best Dancer in the Maldives and some say in the whole of the Indian Ocean 🤣). I even met the managers Mike, Mervyn and Firaq. They took time from their busy schedule to converse with us.

If I have to be critical, there was one occasion we had to wait 45mins for our buggy(the villa was right at the end of the jetty). But I was occupied enjoying the scenic view n didn’t realise the time gone...

All in, it as a fantastic experience.

Loved Finolhu

It's an 18 hour trip from Brisbane but worth every minute. Right from the welcome drink on arrival to gifts for the kids. It's the little things that matter and Mervyn and his team at Finolhu certainly ensured our trip was memorable. We were made to feel right at home and nothing was too difficult. Our best family holiday ever. The overwater villas were very spacious, staff extremely friendly, the food and service was exceptional and very good wifi. Would definitely recommend Finolhu to anyone looking for a holiday of a lifetime. Our little girl got the flu while we were away and the care from the Dr Farnam and Asma made those couple of days so much easier for us. Thank you to all the team for a holiday of a lifetime.

Family trip to Finolhu Maldives

We had an all inclusive Luxury Escape package and I am always weary of all inclusive packages but this one exceeded all expectations. The service was exceptional and the people extremely friendly. We have travelled and stayed in many 5 star resorts around the world but this one topped them all. We stayed for 7 nights with our 2 daughters and couldn't get them out of the kids club, the team there are so welcoming and caring. The food, service and people are truly what makes this island different to anywhere else we've been too. Staying in an overwater bungalow was a dream on our bucket list and the wait was worth it. We are already talking about coming back next year. Thank you to all who made this trip one we will never forget. We love you Finolhu. See you soon.

Wanted to stay longer

My partner and I decided to book a 5 night all inclusive package at Finolhu to celebrate both my 40th birthday and or honeymoon. We also had 14 friends travelling with us for the celebration. 5 nights simply was not enough, I wish we had booked for longer. We had a 2 bedroom sunset overwater villa which was AMAZING! Big pool, large comfy beds, lots of wardrobe space and big spacious bathrooms. Our butler Asma was fabulous, always available on call and ready to arrange anything for our group.
The food was great, constantly cooked fresh and replaced regularly so that it wasn’t sitting around too long. A fantastic pastry chef, some of the best pastries I have had anywhere in the world. All of the staff we encountered were personable, friendly, smiling and willing to assist to ensure that we had the best time on the island and a memorable stay. The daily entertainment staff were great, particularly Luke who even took the time to teach me a few of his tricks.
We spent 1 night doing the Bubble experience, which was certainly a highlight. Our butler for that evening was Shabeen who was very attentive and professional. A lovely private dinner for 2 was served on the beach and then we were left alone for the evening to enjoy sleeping under the full moon in our bubble room. It was certainly a 40th birthday celebration to remember. We would absolutely return for another holiday.
