The Lowdown

The Maldives take beauty to a whole new level. Here, stunning is routine. This paradise-like place in the Indian Ocean is home to some of the world’s best beaches, with wondrous white sands and electric-blue waters unmatched the world over – all fringing some 1,200 islands that make up this transfixing country. And that’s just above the water. Below, you’ll find vibrant tropical fish, spectacular corals and submerged caves, providing an underwater mecca for snorkelers and divers of all levels.
It’s only fitting that the brand-new Finolhu, in the UNESCO world biosphere of Baa Atoll, is rather spectacular itself. This five-star resort brings cool, retro-inspired design to the timelessly beautiful Maldives. Classic movies provide a backdrop to the pinball machines in the glam beach club, Milk Bar operates as an old-school tuck shop serving up smoothies and snacks, while the 60s- and 70s-inspired spa puts a pastel-hued spin on the concept of wellness.
There’s plenty of substance to match this groovy style, too. The marine HUB (Home of the Under-water Biosphere) offers a range of activities, from diving, snorkeling and fishing to sunset and dolphin cruises, while Thunderball organizes a slew of watersports on the adjacent lagoon. Dining options include a seafood shack, Asian fine dining, a North African restaurant and a beach-club menu, while accommodations promise more postcard-perfect touches: dreamy over-water villas, your very own slice of paradise.

There’s a free-standing bath to laze in, while drinking in the Finolhu Lagoon panorama, plus indoor and outdoor showers and a spacious sundeck with lounge chairs. The Outdoor Pool villas are even larger, at 1,938 square feet, with beautiful azure accents inspired by the French Riviera. These luxurious retreats offer a sunset view and your very own freshwater pool.

The resort offers a plethora of drinking and dining spotse. The two-story Baa Baa Beach Club is a hip spot for refueling, tropical-style, any time of day, with live cooking stations at breakfast. Healthy salads and sushi sit alongside pizzas, platters and sweet treats on the all-day menu. After dark, you can sip cocktails, watch retro movies, play pinball and groove to the DJ’s picks. Savor succulent seafood at Fish & Crab Shack; feast on Mandarin duck, snapper, lobster and other fine-dining Asian fare at the colorful Kanusan; and take an aromatic tour of North Africa through Baahaa Grill’s mezzes and tagines.Finolhu even has an old-school tuck shop, Milk Bar, that serves up refreshing smoothies and snacks, alongside delicious essentials like ice cream, chocolate and wine. There’s also a home-delivery service for decadent vacation-dining in bed.

You can preen and pamper yourself to pastel-hued heights at The Cove Club. There are 10 candy-colored treatment divans, each dedicated to a pivotal diva of the 60s or 70s, where you can take your pick from massages and beauty treatments. There are also yoga and meditation on offer, plus a fitness center, a movement pavilion and an outdoor gym.

On this dreamy atoll, powdery white sands dotted with swaying palms stretch alongside the spectacularly blue sea. You can explore your watery surroundings with the help of HUB, (Home of the Under-water Biosphere), which offers fishing, diving, jet-skiing, sunset cruising, dolphin-watching and even star-gazing, while respecting the natural habitat of Baa Atoll’s UNESCO world biosphere.Thunderball is your one-stop shop on Palm Beach for motorized and non-motorized watersports in the lagoon, and Finolhu has even dedicated a patch of paradise to tennis, with floodlit courts and a professional coach waiting to be used. Underwater-photography enthusiasts can make a beeline for Hanifaru Bay, a marine-protected area that teems with plankton-feeding manta rays from May until November.

A true Island Paradise. Words, and indeed images just can't do justice to "the Beauty, The Splendor, The Wonder"

People, you must add Finolhu, on the beautiful Baa Atoll, to the bucket list, but put it on the top. I had very high expectations of Finolhu. From my research and the package i purchased. From the moment we walked off the plane in Male, we were met by a friendly member of the Finolhu team. From there on it was totally smooth as silk and we soon arrived on the island. The view of the lagoon, the spit and the resort on arrival just blue us away. I was over whelmed. I could go on and on and on, however, to wrap it up Marc, Vi and the entire team run the best Island Resort you could ever possible visit. Go for 10 Days, its worth the extra time and money.

Going to the Maldives in May is risky because of weather...so we thought. Well, how wrong were we! It was by far the best holiday we’ve ever had. The service was exceptional. From the moment we have arrived at the airport, we were treated like royalty. We’ve arrived at Finolhu by speedboat - and what a beautiful sight awaited us! It was breathtaking and we were speechless for the first few hours of our stay. Really thought we were dreaming. The island itself was the perfect size for us. Big enough to have a variety of things to do and small enough to get to know everyone and explore everything. Mark was a fantastic host throughout our trip. Between him and Kenzey we felt like real celebrities. Both of them went out of their way to ensure we’ve had a comfortable and unforgettable experience. I wish I could remember all the names of everyone who has contributed to our amazing trip but I can’t. However, I can honestly say that everything at Finolhu runs like a well oiled machine! Room service, kitchen staff, waiters, chefs, entertainment, barmen, DJ, - (thank you Simon for hours of brilliant music and for even throwing a few South African songs in the mix for us!) Every single person went out of their way to contribute towards this exceptional holiday. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the excursions that was available to choose from. Turtle snorkelling, paddle boarding, massages, dolphin cruise, to name but a few. The weather in May was perfect for us. Solid temperatures and a few rainy hours throughout the whole week to cool things down a bit. The views from the room was spectacular. We’ve stayed in a water villa on the lagoon and it felt like a home away from home. With the Crab Shack in the distance and the white stretchy beach in front of us, it certainly made it easy to sit outside for hours on end without ever getting bored! I can highly recommend a stay on this beautiful island and without a doubt, we will most certainly be back. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Mark (x2) and entire Finolhu team. We miss you every day!

Overall the resort is a very nice place to stay. I had only 4 days 3 nights which was short but I had available only this time.Weather was quite good but unfortunately there was too much rain before I came ( I stayed 11-14 June 18 ) so the sea was not so clear during my snorkeling.Very good food and very nice staffs. The room which was ocean villa was perfect. I love them all. And I’ll go back once again.

Amazing Honeymoon at Finolhu !!
Reviewed 6 days ago

We stayed at Finolhu for 6 nights as part of our honeymoon. I don't know where to start this review as this place is truly one of a kind. The island itself is absolutely stunning. It really is a picture postcard type of place. We chose this Island because of the quirky style it has over more traditional islands.

What really makes this place is the staff. They are all so polite and friendly. We laughed every morning at the amount of times we would say good morning back to the staffs smiley faces on the walk to breakfast. They really make you feel welcome. Mark the Resort Manager does a great job took time to come and chat with us each day.

We stayed in a Lagoon villa which was huge. On arrival we had a bottle of champagne waiting for us in the room which was a nice touch. The bed was very comfortable and again huge. There is tea and coffee making facilities, a dressing table with powerful hair dryer plenty of wardrobe space and a great sound system to either listen to Baa Baa FM or play your own music and 3 showers. Outside there is a huge deck with shower two sun loungers and a shaded day bed and seating area. The best thing about the room was waking up to the view of the sun coming up over the Indian Ocean every morning it is something I will never forget.

On the second night when we returned to the room we had cocktails, canapés, a cake and a bath with rose petals drawn in the room.

On our last night Mark offered us an upgrade to a water villa with pool which we happily agreed too. Rooms are pretty much the same except the deck has a lovely infinity pool. You could really lock yourself away from the world in this room if thats the kind of thing you want to do.

On our first day we were sitting by the bar and Ella from the dive centre appeared and informed us that a turtle nest had just hatched and they were taking guests to see them. They took us by boat to the fish and crab shak where the nest was and we got to see 100's of turtles swim off onto the sea to start their lives which was a really special experience.

We had the all inclusive dine around package which is a must as drinks and food are pricey in the Maldives. This is standard for all islands as we found on our first trip 9 years ago to Kuramathi. I would recommend doing this that way you really don't have to worry about a thing. We ate at Kanusan on our first night, the setting and food were amazing. The eggplant dim sum was my favourite which surprised me as i'm a big meat eater. We also ate once at the Baa Baa Grill which was beautiful too. I had lamb chops and my wife had steak which was presented over hot coals and smelt delicious. What did surprise us both as we are big fans of a la carte dining is that we only ate in the evening a la carte restaurants once each. The buffet was so good that we ate in there 4 nights out of 6.

Finally the fish and crab shak, i don't feel i need to go into detail on this one too much as previous reviews say it all. Its amazing, the food, setting and location is really something special. We managed to eat there twice and would have probably visited every day if weather permitted. Say hello to Mohammed down there he is lovely guy and does a great job!

Some of the negative reviews on here are really silly people who think the staff are rude are probably rude or abrupt with them to start. Its simple treat people how you want to be treat in life and you cant go wrong. They are not your servants. I didn't have a problem with shower temperature nor did noise from the golf buggy disturb us at all. We also loved the music around the pool which created a great vibe.

All in all this place is truly paradise with a modern quirky vibe and my wife and I loved every second of our stay. We would both return in an instant if money was no object and would highly recommend it to anyone thinking of going. The only bad point i can mention is that we had to leave.

Thanks to all the staff and guests we met who made our honeymoon and amazing experience x
