In the South Ari Atoll, one of the world’s top dive spots, Constance Moofushi is as much a mecca for aspiring Jacque Cousteau types as it is for lovebirds seeking a Robinson Crusoe–esque escape. But you can forget making like a castaway: this is island living in serious style. Slow your pace by luxuriating in the comfort of the resort’s 110 rustic-elegant bungalows, or dine on fresh fish with your feet in the white sand or on a terrace hovering above the crystal clear lagoon. Guests have a choice of thatch-roofed Beach Villas, each with its own private terrace (complete with swaying hammock), or stilted Water Villas, with stairways that descend directly into the Indian Ocean. All villas combine rattan and bamboo furnishings, stripped wood, and rough-hewn stone with such creature comforts as air conditioning and flat-screen televisions. The resort is all-inclusive, which means that buffet meals at the sandy-floored Manta restaurant, sunset cocktails at either of the two casual, feet-in-sand bars and other extras, such as one 90-minute boat excursion per person, per stay, are included. Take a break from the buffet at Manta for dinner at Alizee Beach Grill, where just-caught fish is cooked on a charcoal grill, or have the culinary team set up a beach barbecue for a romantic dinner under the stars. Treatments at the Spa de Constance, an indulgent overwater wellness retreat with eight treatment rooms and a dedicated yoga pavilion, are extra, but they’re well worth the splurge.
In the Area
The on-site dive center has PADI certificate courses for beginners as well as specialist shark and manta ray dive courses, and divers will love the easy access to more than 30 dive sites — including Maamigili Beru, stomping ground for whale sharks, and Hukuru Elhi Faru, known as Manta Point. Come nightfall, organized night fishing expeditions will have you hauling in snapper, tuna and grouper using hand lines; while during the day masks, snorkels and fins are free to guests. The resort provides three different recommended snorkel routes, including one ideal for beginners. Back on dry land you can play a game of chess or watch a movie in the entertainment lounge, wallpapered in Bollywood movie posters.
How to Get There
We have just returned from moofushi again, (by constance) We visited last year also at the same time in 2018 , and 2019 was just exceptional also. The team happily still headed up by Mrs Sasha T , who also really looked after us , are all doing great , with some really great new happy team members. The island is just as great. Snorkeling was great and the whale shark trip was amazing. The island is still pushing forward with there eco friendly , sustainable desires, very commendable. Weather was great, again. Sea life was amazing, sharks, turtles, octopus, rays, sting and even a manta this year. I can not say enough good things about the place and the people. Met some lovely people ,guests also. Quatar airline seats need a bit of a make over,as we flew with them on all legs of the journey, from Cardiff to Doha to male and back. It is as private as you like it to be and also as releaxing as you would like it to be. I simply can not speak highly enough about this place. While we were there, other people came from another island cutting there more expensive trip short to come to this island. Also we will be wanting to book to go back, so that says enough. thank you all for looking after us so well. We also brought home 3 bottles of used batteries to help with the recycling efforts, i would suggest all guests try to bring some home.
from the first minute we loved Moofushi. Warm welcome and barefoot concept evoked a relaxed atmosphere. Food, service, pristine sea, underwater paradise, everything was fantastic. Great wine/coctail choice. Loved the morning fitness where i always got the warm smile from the yoga man - definitelly try out the morning or evening yoga with him! Dont miss the life music or dining experience in ala card restaurant! Its just extraordinary, fantastic place with calm atmosphere !
So, back for our 5th visit - I have a few mixed feelings about this trip.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still beautiful here and I think if you were coming for the first or even second time you’d love it but as a returning guest who’s been coming since 2011 we’ve noticed some changes.
Firstly the island is as beautiful as ever and the laid back atmosphere where you don’t have to dress up too much for the restaurants is what we love.
There’s been lots of “photo opportunity” areas added which is good fun for Instagram lovers.
The gym has really good equipment, with running machines, a cross trainer, a few bikes (including a recumbent bike), a rower as well as free weights and weight machines. It’s always really nice and cool in there with towels, water and fruit provided.
The food had always been consistently good but 4 years ago when we came, Richard the chef at that time had raised the bar! It was amazing!
We found the food this time quite average but still lots of choices every night.
My husband also tells me the wine is as good as ever with huge choices.
We were really sad to find that the majority of the staff we have loved seeing time and time again, who have always made us feel very special by remembering our names and general stuff about us and seemed genuinely pleased to see us have left! They’ve all gone to a brand new resort (not Constance) opening in August, even KD has left.
This is a huge loss to the island. Most of the new staff are also great but I don’t feel they get to know their guests like the previous staff, they didn’t really chat to us, know our names or even know that we’d been there numerous times before. I must mention this is with the exception of Mode who always remembered where we liked to sit, what we liked to drink etc so a special thank you to him.
Nasy in the Manta bar, Adam in the Manta restaurant and Gopan in Totem bar are still there currently, although one of them is also leaving next week, but it was so lovely to see them again, so thank you to them and to all the staff who took care of us.
Some changes we have noticed...
When guests used to walk along the deck back to their villa, the buggy cars or bikes (which are now electric moped type bikes) used to always stop and wait for us to pass, now it’s a bit hit and miss, most stop but some just carried on so that you had to stop and step aside. Around the island we also found these buggy cars being driven pretty fast around corners, which is not good for the person they meet!
We have also for the first time ever in all our visits been bitten this time around by mozzies. We’ve been this time of year a number of times before and never had a problem in the past so not sure why it has happened this time?
Our bed was very hard, and we didn’t find it comfortable, not sure if it’s now old and needs replacing or if they have been replaced already but are not as good as the old beds?
On our previous 4 visits it’s been mainly couples or couples with a family, this time however there were many large groups which really changed the vibe of the island.
The main reason our holiday wasn’t perfect this time (and honestly our 4 visits before this really were perfect) was because on the first part of our holiday we had a large group who congregated in the villa next to us and the next one along from that, who constantly had their front door open and shouted at each other all day, we finally on the third day mentioned it to management to see if we could be moved but was told they were leaving the next day. Great we thought, maybe some peace at last but then the new couple who came in later that day had a toddler who spent a lot of time screaming and crying during the day! We don’t like complaining so left it, but I really wish that seeing as we’d already had problems with “noisy neighbours” then maybe management would have thought twice about putting a young child next door to us. Our third set of neighbours on the Sunday morning decided at 6am it would be a great time to go out on their balcony and have a loud conversation with each other! So we were dreadfully unlucky the whole time with our neighbours and we really missed our peaceful days out on our deck area.
In my previous reviews I could never fault this place and it’s a place that we felt nowhere else could compare to so to lose that feeling is really sad for me.
Saying that, we still weren’t ready to leave, I’ve still loved it here which shows you just how lovely this place is and I would never say don’t come here, it’s just beautiful. I think other returning guests might understand more where I am coming from than new guests will.
We came back to visit Moofushi in June this year and were overjoyed to find we had the same wow factor as we first experienced when we came in 2018, the service, rooms, diving and AI package is perfect for us and the Moofushi family really made us feel welcome.
I did 11 dives and took the DPV (underwater Scooter) course which allowed me to dive in the fast outer channels to swim alongside sharks in large numbers that frequent this area, a big shout out to the dive team who are nothing but professional in their approach and service.
Sasha and the team make you feel welcome, they are trained to a high level of service and always make you feel like you are special to them in the way they interact with you.
We will be back again in the future and will look to see how things are being maintained in our absence, I made a few comments in my feedback but these are minor, all in all its the best island out of 12 we have visited in the Maldives.
Thanks for looking after us!
PS I have posted a video on YouTube called 'Moofushi June 2019' this will give you a flavour of the resort and its personality.

We combined a trip to Sri Lanka and the Maldives with my husband, and the Constance Moofushi was the oasis we dreamed of after all the excitement of Sri Lanka. The personnel were professional and friendly, the beach bungalow room was beautful (I had some doubts based on certain reviews, but it turns out the bungalow was just perfect) and we had our own little private back yard with a hamac, lounge chaires, etc. We were also extremely happy to see all the wildlife around and even on the island! Just to name the big guys, we spotted several large dolphin pods, a large white tip shark (and many many baby black tips), several turtles, rays, and eels. The fish and coral were another highlight (some of the coral has been bleached but the resort is actively trying to regenerate their house coral with a coral garden). And to top it all off, the food was really very good (apparently moofushi has one of the best restaurants in the maldives), the wine was great (having a winery owner as a husband can make us picky, but nothing to complain about here!), the spa experience and yoga both wonderful, and the outings were lots of fun even if a bit pricey! Overall Constance Moofushi was more than we could have hoped for and we hope to come back one day!
