In the South Ari Atoll, one of the world’s top dive spots, Constance Moofushi is as much a mecca for aspiring Jacque Cousteau types as it is for lovebirds seeking a Robinson Crusoe–esque escape. But you can forget making like a castaway: this is island living in serious style. Slow your pace by luxuriating in the comfort of the resort’s 110 rustic-elegant bungalows, or dine on fresh fish with your feet in the white sand or on a terrace hovering above the crystal clear lagoon. Guests have a choice of thatch-roofed Beach Villas, each with its own private terrace (complete with swaying hammock), or stilted Water Villas, with stairways that descend directly into the Indian Ocean. All villas combine rattan and bamboo furnishings, stripped wood, and rough-hewn stone with such creature comforts as air conditioning and flat-screen televisions. The resort is all-inclusive, which means that buffet meals at the sandy-floored Manta restaurant, sunset cocktails at either of the two casual, feet-in-sand bars and other extras, such as one 90-minute boat excursion per person, per stay, are included. Take a break from the buffet at Manta for dinner at Alizee Beach Grill, where just-caught fish is cooked on a charcoal grill, or have the culinary team set up a beach barbecue for a romantic dinner under the stars. Treatments at the Spa de Constance, an indulgent overwater wellness retreat with eight treatment rooms and a dedicated yoga pavilion, are extra, but they’re well worth the splurge.
In the Area
The on-site dive center has PADI certificate courses for beginners as well as specialist shark and manta ray dive courses, and divers will love the easy access to more than 30 dive sites — including Maamigili Beru, stomping ground for whale sharks, and Hukuru Elhi Faru, known as Manta Point. Come nightfall, organized night fishing expeditions will have you hauling in snapper, tuna and grouper using hand lines; while during the day masks, snorkels and fins are free to guests. The resort provides three different recommended snorkel routes, including one ideal for beginners. Back on dry land you can play a game of chess or watch a movie in the entertainment lounge, wallpapered in Bollywood movie posters.
How to Get There
We were told about this island by our Kuoni travel agent. What an amazing place, the staff are incredible. It is true to say that nothing is too much trouble, from the Management Team, down to the young man that keeps the villas clean. Within 24 hours they all know who you are and greet you personally every time they see you. This is not a gimmick they truly are interested in every guest and what they have done during their day. Their mantra is “Come as a guest and leave as a friend”. I was in tears when we left they are all so nice and the whole island is perfect.
Extraordinary service. They allowed us to stay in the room and enjoy all the services til 5pm for the departure of internal flight on the last day. They provided us very good hospitality during the stay. Highly recommend my friends to visit this hotel.
We visited Constance Moofushi for our honeymoon in September. The trip took a rocky start as we flew from KL after two weeks which had a 6hour delayed flight. This meant we missed the seaplane to the resort (they stop around 5:30pm) and had to stay in Male for an evening. The sea planes are not particularly organised and the resort has no control over when you fly and so we missed a full 24hours which was disappointing.
This being said! I will always give the Constance a full 5* review. This was for one reason, The Staff!!!!! Each and every member of staff are fantastic and I can’t put into words how great they are. We spent an afternoon wine pairing in the sea with black finned sharks swimming around our feet. It was incredible! The following evening we had our a la Carte meal where Joseph (what a man and sommelier!) brought us a different wine to taste tailed to our choice of food. As the evening unravelled the sommeliers invited us to a private wine tasting in the wine cellar! Well! This alone made the trip. All the guys and Kim were great fun and made our holiday, you will notice our blurry eyes I’m the photos (Henri- give them all a pay rise)!
The setting is stunning and after a week in the Borneo rainforest and KL it was a much needed rest. It is all very relaxed but if you are like me you will need to make the most of the trips, either free or paid. Snorkelling is amazing and you will definitely see sharks and plenty of tropical fish and sting rays. Make the most of the snorkelling trip though to see the turtles, equally as fantastic!
The food is buffet apart from one a la carte meal. We aren’t a fan of buffet food as we feel it takes the occasion away from dinner and is over too quickly. The food though was very nice and plenty of selection. Only comment would be that you could order more choice from the bar in between meals in the event you miss lunch or breakfast (which you will do if you hit the wine cellar and up until 2am dancing on the DJ night.
Henri (General Manager) is always around and checking on everyone. Very friendly gentlemen, knows his stuff and makes you feel welcome, you can see his attitude rubs off on all the other staff!
After a bad start to our Maldives holiday, the Constance and it’s staff made our trip fantastic. We can’t express how great the staff actually are! We hope to now visit more Constance hotels based on this trip!
